Step to access directly to the Nexus 5 storage as an external drive from PC (Stock Kit Kat):

Go to Setting > Device > Storage
Then click on the top right corner where the 3 dots and select USB computer connection.
Choose Connect As Media device (MTP).
You PC will detect yr Nexus 5 as an external storage.

I see my Nexus 5 - File system showing as Generic hierarchical which may not be supported by Windows XP which only capable to detect up to FAT 32.
You may need to try connecting your Nexus 5 to a newer version of Windows.
