My current setup = Boston Acoustics Soundware XS 5.1 paired to Onkyo 609. I usually watch movies with DTS HD MA or Dobly TrueHD. However, I kinda feel that the center speaker doesn't really stand out, i.e. the dialogue doesn't sound rich and full enough. So I up the gain level and reduced the rest but still feels the same. Does it make sense to change only the center to a bigger unit and leave the rest? Will that make the sound "unbalanced"?

If you want to change the center is advisable to change the front speakers as well to have more harmonize sound
*
Might have a problem there as the fronts are mounted on the TV panel and I don't want to do any modifications to move the wiring if I get bookshelf speakers. Anyway, what do you mean by harmonized sound? Do you mean better staging and balance between both fronts and center?

Basically the front and centre speakers should sound the same, else when a character in the move is speaking while walking from the left to the right side of the stage, he or she will sound like different person along the way.
That is why it is preferable to have the same drivers in the three speakers. However you can also source for different speakers if they sound quite close to each other. One way is to go for at least speakers from the same country, American speakers should quite different from British ones.

Ah okay, you make sense there...looks like I might need to change all 3, if not don't change at all...

Your problem could be due to different height of the centre from the other 2 fronts. Try to tilt the centre up to point at you (at listening position) directly to see if it makes any difference.
*
Unfortunately the center is already directly pointed to me and the L/R is placed higher but angled downwards..

Small cube speakers is not enough fill up wide space. Really cannot expect much
*
Yeah, I also think so..sometimes can hear the speakers sound strained as well..looks like time to change them

The Aego is also a cube compact speaker right? I am looking for a bigger driver speaker for my next upgrade. Thanks for the offer though.

my recommendation is minimum 5.25" driver to produce wide coverage of front stage & mid frequency
going from aego t (single 4") to kef q200c (2x5") make me realise that i have wasted the av receiver capability
*
you are right..currently my BA is only 1 1/2 drivers which sounds tiny..I hear that the much recommended Boston Acoustics A25 L/R/C is pretty good, anyone tried them before? They are bigger at 5 1/4" drivers

Finally bought a pair of Boston Acoustics A25 front speakers and A225 Center speaker to replace my existing cubes. Was contemplating these units vs the new Klipsch Reference Premiere but the Klipsch was at least RM1K more. Pics below
TV: Sony 60W600B
Amp: Onkyo TX-NR609
Center: Boston Acoustics A225
Fronts: Boston Acoustics A25
Rears: Boston Acoustics Soundware XS
Sub: Boston Acoustics Soundware XS sub
Interconnects: Mixture of Wireworld Luna and Norstone cables
Media: Sony S380 & WDTV Live

How is the speaker compare to the cube ?
*
Much better in terms of soundstage, presence and atmosphere..detail and clarity is about the same, kinda bright as they are American branded speakers and also haven't really burned in yet..good enough for me for HT and stereo at the moment

Nice and neat setup, looks like you have a big and comfy place, makes the 60in TV look like 40in .. The distance to the TV more than 12 feet?
*
Thanks for the compliments bro..Distance from tv to view is around 10 feet +..It looks I might need a 70" TV soon biggrin.gif

Thinking to upgrade my focal dome front to bookshelf or floor standing speaker..

Any recommendation..

Was thinking moving 2 front focal dome to rear.. creating 7.1 then add another 4 ceiling speaker to 7.1.4 for dolby atmos

Hope some audiophile sifu can help

I had the same problem as you..my BA unit is also small (1" driver) which I believe is similar to your Focals..after a while, the speakers sound thin and staging is small, which I think is a problem with lifestyle cube speakers and big room space..I also wanted to initially change the center only as most of the vocal and movie soundtrack comes from there, but was advised to change all L, R and Center at one go..Did that and the front staging and it is so much better especially with more presence and thicker sound..Leave the rears to the original cube speakers, doesn't make much difference, to me anyway biggrin.gif

FWIW,

I thought Satts are sufficient as surrounds but aftr changing my JBL control 1s to proper bookshlvs [SvS SBS-01], I find the surround channels more engaging - granted that it [surr] are on - maybe 10 ; 15% of the time at best..
I guess if you can afford it - proper bkshlves are a decent upgrd to a HT..

That's what I've been told as well. It might not be a difference to me at the moment, as I am still paying most of my attention to the ones that I've changed, but it might be in the future. That's the beauty of partial upgrade, you get to experience and enjoy the changes in your setup and appreciate it more rather than changing everything at one go!

I use to think of surround is not that important. After I change to a KEF dipole speakers is really change a lot.
*
More poison! I might also think so when I start noticing that my surrounds are lacking...
