Hey guyz...what’s the best way to set up a Blu-Ray player. There are 2 HDMI ...one for video and one for Audio. Should I connect the video direct to the TV and the audio separately? Or is the 1 HDMI setup sufficient, via the receiver, and then to the TV?

I only have a 3.1 or is it 5.1 setup. Two stand speakers, centre speaker and subwoofer. Will do the Dolby Atmos later when I upgrade the receiver.

Thx

You can do it either way, it's up to you.

I personally like to simplify to as little cables as possible to reduce possibility of handshake problems. Just gotta make sure cable is properly up to spec, so if you're passing through 4k60 then make sure the cable is capable of HDMI 2.0 bandwidth (18gbps).

2 towers and 1 center + 1 sub = 3.1.

If I connect BD player to Amplifier and then to TV, do both HDMI cables need to be 2.0 bandwidth (18GBPS)?

Thank you!

Just saying... why are 4K Blu-ray players so expensive in Malaysia? The SONY UHD UBP-X700 costs RM1399 on Lazada, yet I picked up an unused, open box meaning returned but completely new unit from eBay USA for US$110 (RM 460) plus delivery RM105. No taxes as under RM500.

And on top on this, SONY Blu-ray players are all Made in MALAYSIA. So if the player needs repair, it can be done easily here.

The player works on 12v. Plug is 110-240v capability. Just need adapter to fit 2-pin plug.

Surround speakers.

Decided to spend RM470 on a pair of Mission MV-DS bookshelf speakers (as surround) to complement my old Mission Volare V63 stand and V6C centre speakers.

Would the former complement the other? Will eventually add an ONKYO TR-N696 7.1 Receiver but for now, I’d be happy to just have 5.1 properly.

Can someone recommend a reasonably priced stand for said speakers? Dealer was trying to sell me stands which cost almost twice the price of the speakers!

Above bookshelf speaker lighter than 5 kg I think. So any old stand will do. Lazada has some for around RM200 but are sure ugly.

I saw nice ones (metal) from USA but the weight is 5kg. The postage will be too much so might as well try to get here.

Stands do matter - to a certain extent.

Hollow stands will actually cause artificial reverberation, that could then be amplified by nearby boundary. Weak stands may also not be able to handle the weight of a speaker.

Of course, don't be an idiot and buy for some plutonium-infused blast proof glass stand or something.

Guys...

I'm torn between getting the Rosewood speaker stands for around RM200 or the IKEA bookshelves which can function as stands. Note that these are for surround sound only. The IKEA option works out cheaper and I get to use them as bookshelves too! But they're WHITE! Total colour clash!

The important thing about surround speaker placement is the height and the angle of them. How tall are those IKEA shelves? Ideally you'd want surround channels to be 2-3ft above your ear while seated. If you're doing Atmos/DTSX, then the surround speakers should be between ear level and up to 1ft above at most.

My opinion get those rosewood looking stands and get them higher than 80cm.

The IKEA shelves are 80cm high. Same as the stands.

The highest stands I can get are 90cm and they're around RM200. I already bought the shelves..which I need anyway.

Thank you for your feedback.

The new Onkyo TX-RZ50 is the first AV receiver that could do 4K 120Hz HDR VRR with the Xbox Series X, the Sony PS5 & NVidia's RTX 30 Series graphics cards

Beginning to find that Onkyo too pricey in Malaysia vs the US.

Thought you've been enjoying the Philips all this while.  biggrin.gif

A friend asked me about 4K receivers, which made me look into that again. The Onkyo set I recommended (with the speakers) has a basic receiver that has no HDMI eARC, just ARC. Something to pay attention to when you look into 4K receivers.

Looks like I’ll be looking at Denons now. They’re slightly cheaper than Onkyos.

I don't recall I seen Mission Volare series in Malaysia, you bought from Singapore? Would like to get one if I can find used... M53 England made also good.
Here mostly M74, M34, MX4 etc.

I bought 2nd hand from an Expat in Penang. 2 Volare V63 stand speakers, 1 VC Centre speaker + KEF subwoofer and Onkyo AV Receiver for RM1.5K.

The last England made model before shifting full production to IAG China, another similar type would be m53. Some guailou swear by this are the last best mission.

First China made attempt of mimicking will be m66i which have poor review.

I bought the set last year. And I think he’s had it since 2013. He bought it from UK or Spain before moving to Penang.

I just bought two Mission MV-DS bookshelf speakers for surround sound cos all I have are those 2.1 front speakers. Surround need not be the best but thought the RM475 price was rather decent. It’s ok if it’s made in China. Hopefully some decent QC.

But overall, good quality speakers should remain where they are made. In the UK.

I also have a very old Onkyo AVR. No Atmos but can give 7.2 though I’m satisfied with 5.2 for now until I upgrade to a better AVR with Dolby ATMOS.

Just recently bought a 4K Android TV as shown (Philips 55”), and a Sony 4K UHD BluRay player. Got the latter from eBay USA for US$110. Same model costs RM1300 here!

Get whichever stand which is the following, in the following order:

2. Weight : Pick the HEAVIEST.

I bought the 90cm stands. Or will be. Need to confirm with seller the delivery charge tomorrow first. There is an option to fill the stands with sand. But the speakers as I’ve just found out are quite small. They’re not even 1’ tall. They’re only 22cm in height! Maybe I’ll wait till I get the speakers to see what sort of stands will suit them best. But there aren’t very many “speaker stands” when doing a search. Same ones keep popping up on Lazada or Shoppee.

I live in an apartment, and my system is in the living room. There’s no sound proofing or anything... just window with the roaring of bikes on the ground floor. I’m 14 floors up. It’s only quiet now during MCO but come holiday time, the Mat Rempits will be zooming thru the night.

So overall I’m not too bothered to hear crystal clear sound from the surround speakers. Just watched the 4K The Fifth Element Blu-Ray the other night and was quite surprised at the quality of the sound even as with what I have now.

Good thing I held off buying the stands. I wanted to see how big the speakers are...and they’re smaller than I thought they might be. They’re really just good as surround speakers. They’re now just sitting on top of a 80cm bookshelf and it’s perfect (for now) until I can get a slim cheap metal stand.

Hey guyz...me again biggrin.gif

I've a 4K Blu-Ray player, using HDMI2.0 cable -> my old Onkyo TX-SR606 AVR (not 4K compliant but working fine) -> HDMI2.0 cable to 4K TV. Sound is restricted to 5.1 and I don't Ave Dolby ATMOS yet which is fine for me.

Would 4K vision be affected/restricted?

unless ur bd player got two hdmi output

My question is, will the quality suffer because the signal goes thru a non 4K AVR? Or will the difference be negligible?

My Sony Blu-Ray 4K player does have 2 HDMI outputs. One for video and one audio. But now I'm just using the one into the AVR that handles both video and audio. If I use one HDMI2.0 straight to TV, and the other to AVR, won't the synchronisation be a little off?
