I'm going to redo 2 of my cars tints due to blurring aging tint (over 15 years VKool). VKool now too expensive to re-tint on the cars.

May I know what are the 2 cars you plan to retint? More than 15 years old car and you are considering keeping both vehicles longer, must be precious to you.

I don't know about other people who are worried about smart tag, RFID access card at security guard house or other devices which may not work with the tint installed at the front windscreen. I guess most people will have the same concern including me since it would be inconvenient if all the devices don't work. My current Huper Optik tint could not work with RFID access card at the security guard house, and Smart Tag is patchy if I place the card or device directly behind the windscreen with the tint. However, I have a small part at the top of the windscreen as shown in the photo above where there is no tint installed there. It's just some dotted strip at the top of the windscreen, and if I place any card or device there, everything will work since there is no tint there.

No doubt the installer can say it will work or not, but it may be a gamble. My suggestion is to do it like the photo above by leaving the top part where the rear mirror lies untinted. I don't think it will affect the heat rejection performance much by leaving out that small part for the added convenience of having all your Smart Tag, access cards or similar devices work. If one still desires to have the whole windscreen tinted, the other option is to wind down your side windscreen and hold the device in your palm with your whole arm sticking out of the windscreen when passing through Smart Tag booths, guard house with electronic boom gate etc.

My only concern is with GPS navigation devices such as Waze or Google map as it can't work with V-kool in my previous car, or the signal is very very weak. It can't work 90% of the time unless you wind down your windscreen. With Huper Optik, no issue with Google map navigation.

No money to change cars lor. Cars still in very excellent condition both engine and chassis wise (change fully every 5 to 7k or 6 months, coating every year to keep paint shiny), lots of parts, mounting, etc change liao, spend a bundle of repairs already and resale price not worth to sell when it is in good working condition. However still worry one day, the repair cost will suddenly shoot up when something major fail but not choice....

Coz  we need 1 additional car some more due to extra family member coming of age. So tak da money to upgrade and have to plan buy another at full price without trade in.....

So die die have to keep these 2 cars ..or die die 3 cars working...got another 2011 proton persona but that VKool Elite tint still in excellent conditions for its age and very high mileage (my working car due to cheap maintenance).
Currently 2008 Civic FD and 2006 City Vtec. Both VKool Elite original tint since the beginning.
*
If the cars are in good condition with low maintenance, and most importantly do not give you any major problem(s), then it is wise to keep maintaining the cars and keep the balance in FD. biggrin.gif Your Honda Civic 2008 and City 2006 must be problem free and cheap to maintain then since you are considering to keep the cars longer although they are 17 years and 15 years old respectively. The same cannot be said about my Ford Focus. Initially I also didn't want to sell the car and intend to keep maintaining it. However, after hitting 8 years old, all the problems crop up and the replacement part is very costly. I've spent RM3k last year and RM6k+ earlier this year replacing faulty parts, and this is not including the usual maintenance of changing engine oil, filter and spark plugs. The steering rack of my car has been replaced, and if it fails again(touch wood), I"ll need to spend RM9k+ for a new one. So in my case, it's a choice of spending a lot of money to maintain the Ford, or sell it for a problem-free new car. In your case, if the Hondas don't give you a lot of headache with low maintenance charges, then it's wise to keep maintaining it.

Looks like I've strayed off topic. Getting back on track, for older cars perhaps cheaper but still effective tint will be good enough. Even for new cars I am not inclined to go with RM4k+ tint these days although I once installed 3.6k V-kool for my previous cars. The days of spending on expensive tint are over as these days the allocation of funds for more essential things in life is more important, at least to me.

is there any of you guys have actually face a JPJ roadblock where they actually measure you window's tint using device or what?

Or they just measure it using their gaze only?
*
So far I have not encountered any jpj roadblock (touch wood) although in the news it was reported since 2019 there were many offenders who violated the tint regulations were caught and fined.

The most recent announcement of RM2k fine or jail sounds serious and if I were caught at the road block, the tint on my car would fail the VLT test although I picked the lightest one available. As a matter of fact when I was doing the tint on my vehicle recently, I was surprised the guys before me picked VLT 32% for the front windscreen and 17% VLT for front side.

*
Yes. that is one of the reasons it is risky to pick a tint with VLT that is very close to the permissible values allowed by JPJ. For instance, if permissible VLT for front and front side are 70% and 50% respectively, even if you pick a tint which is very close to the values, say VLT 72% or 52% for instance, most likely during test it will fail. From what I was told, it is safe to pick a tint which is about 10% higher just to be sure since the original bare windscreen is not 100% VLT. Say for front windscreen, picking a tint of VLT 80% instead of 70% would be safe, and for front side, picking a tint of VLT 60% instead of 50% would be safe.

i see, the issue here would be many shop's highest vlt tint is 70%, therefore, need to go with no windshield tint to be safe.
*
Actually there is but not all brands. Just a random check, Llumar has tints with high VLT, Airblue AIR80 with VLT 78%, Airblue AIR90 with VLT 86%. The problem is most people are less inclined to pick these tints as the heat rejection is minimal. As we all know the purpose of the tint is to reject heat as much as possible to keep the car cool, so by going with a high VLT tint which makes little difference, most people might be inclined to pick one which does not meet JPJ's requirement.

The tint on my front and side front windscreens used to be VLT 59% and 40%, but now it's replaced with VLT 63% and 53%. The front windscreen is still below 70% so it will fail the test if there's an operasi. I guess most people don't care by going way below the permitted values. However, even for abiding drivers who picked a tint with VLT 70% and 50% for front and front side, chances are high the tint will fail the VLT test too as mentioned earlier.

Has anyone had experience with JPJ testing your vehicle at the roadblock? Would appreciate if anyone can share the experience if it's a Pass or Fail, and the VLT of your tint.

You're right!

This was my Puspakom report for a Perodua Kenari.
Front - no tint
Sides - Clear security film.

Results:
HDPN- 78% HDPN S.KANAN- 68% HDPN S.KIRI- 68%

So best to remove tints before inspections or high chance of failing with any tinting film.
*
So the front windscreen without any tint is already VLT 78%? That's something new to me. If that's the case, theoretically only a VLT 92% tint will work to get the VLT to 70%. In other words, any tint that is 91% or lower on your Kenari will cause the VLT to dip below 70% and thus fail the Puspakom or JPJ roadblock test.

Bought a 2016 HRV from a neighbour few years ago, tore off the tint from front windscreen, puspakom test 76%.

No point installing any tint if worried about roadblock.
*
So I guess most windscreens bare without any tint is in the range of VLT 75% to 80%.

I've not encountered any roadblock for the past 20+ years in nabbing vehicles with dark tints. Touch wood. I have seen such operasi before but my car wasn't stopped. But with the most recent announcement by the government in 2019 it was mentioned RM2k fine or jail, so if they take it seriously this time I presume a lot of vehicles will not pass in a JPJ roadblock.

That's the reason I am asking if anyone here has experienced his/her vehicle being tested in a JPJ roadblock. I will surely not put any tint on the front windscreen if JPJ is going all out on the operasi. For the front side windscreens, it is still ok to pick one with VLT 75% I guess since the limit is VLT 50% Better than nothing.

Personally, feel JPJ not going to jail 90% vehicle owners all failing front windscreen test.

All my cars range 50-60% for front after installing good tint.
More important to me is night visibility, clarity and comfort.
*
Jpj may not send people to jail but they can always enforce the RM2k fine. If there is strict enforcement every week then how many people will be able to pay up regularly? Yes comfort is important but if jpj do enforce what that has been established, people can choose whether they want comfort or pay RM2k regularly with jail for repeat offenders.

The issue now is it appears that there is no clear indication on how serious is jpj with regard to enforcement so nobody bothers to follow the regulations that have been enforced.

I have installed TotalGard Infusion Pro for my vehicle, the highest VLT for front windscreen 2nd highest VLT for the side windscreens. Regrettably the heat rejection is not very good, actually worse than the Huper Optik I had before this.

In this sense, the V-kool is definitely better than the Totalgard Infusion Pro in terms of heat rejection performance.

Went with VLT 63/53/32 for my Alza, quite ok with it as it cost a third of Vkool in my previous cars.
*
Cost-wise it is a landslide win for Totalgard Infusion because the whole car costs less than RM600 only for C-segment whereas the V-kool now should be RM4k-5k. But heat rejection if compared to Huper Optik Sech60/C40 the Totalgard still lost but the Sech60 VLT is 59% which is lower (failed JPJ guideline). If one is not too critical with the JPJ guideline can still go with Huper Optik Sech60 and the total cost would be RM1.6k to 1.7k for whole car, now maybe abit higher I'm not sure.

If I end up with the Toyota Corolla Cross GR Sport, I will not be replacing the factory tint which comes with the car to comply with JPJ's 70% VLT requirement. The factory tint on the Toyota Corolla Cross is VLT 80%. Initially thought of going with this TotalGard but after replacing my 9-year old HuperOptik tint with this TotalGard, feels like no difference, in fact a bit hotter. When the Huper Optik was newly installed on my car 9 years ago, it is surely much cooler than this Totalgard but it's an unfair comparison since the VLT of the Totalgard is slightly higher than the Huper Optik.

mine with 53/53/2 for rear and sunroof. ok for heat rejection. High VLT can gain heat as well? Make sure u double check the tint with meter for IRR%. My other car with Wingard Royale, spend almost rm3k, choose high VLT last time, sometime felt the sun heat due to bright light. Double tint the car with lower VLT, same Wingard product and that make the car cooler and look cool (hopefully JPJ roadblock can skip)
*
VLT 53% for front windcreen should be much better than the VLT 63% but it's not an option for me. The Vkool Elite VLT70% tint surely has much better heat rejection than this Totalgard VLT63%. The Huper Optik Sech60 VLT59% is better than Totalgard VLT63% but that is expected because the VLT is lower. In the case of Vkool Elite, although at a high VLT of 70% it still manage to have better heat rejection than both Totalgard and Huper optik VLT 63% and 59% respectively. So in other words you really pay a high price for the performance, RM4k+ vs RM600 so it's a big difference.

The low price of the Totalgard is the main attraction so I wouldn't say it's useless. It's better than nothing. But if one has extra budget I would surely not recommend this Totalgard. Can go for Huper Optik at RM1.5k to 2k better performance but the VLT is still slightly lower than JPJ's requirement of 70% VLT for front windscreen so there's a risk there during roadblock. There may be other better options around RM2k to 3k mark and others who have experience with other brands may share their experience. For cost no object, my experience tells me V-kool is still the best but you pay for the price.

Would like to ask. What would be the best heat rejecting tint for the front windscreen with VLT above 70%? So far my experience and personal rating is as below for the tints I've used for my current and previous cars in terms of heat rejection.

Installed on Front windscreen
1. V-Kool Elite - 8.5/10
2. Huper Optic Sech60 - 7/10
3. Totalgard Infusion Pro 65 N8 - 6/10

Despite some claims that the Totalgard Infusion Pro (RM600 for whole car) is comparable or better than V-kool Elite, that is not my experience at all.

I am now looking for a good tint just for the front windscreen and am seeking experience if people have found a tint with comparable or better performance than the V-kool Elite. Please state the price too. ONLY FRONT WINDSCREEN with VLT>70%.

Thanks.

VLT>70% is too high if the owner intends for the best of the best Heat rejection. If u read in this thread, the heat source can come from the VLT as well. my 2 sens. For JPJ, pas experience, VLT 50-60% never stop at roadblock. If u looking for Puspakom inspection yes, will be rejected
*
I'm not referring to JPJ or Puspakom inspection. I'm referring to tints with VLT>70% that have good heat rejection. My benchmark is V-kool Elite (VLT is 73.2%) where the heat rejection is the best I've experienced so far.

If there are other tints with VLT>70% with better heat rejection performance than V-kool Elite, would appreciate if the details can be shared here.

FWIW the V-kool Elite (VLT 73.2%) has superior heat rejection than Huper Optik Sech60 (VLT 59%) and Totalgard Infusion Pro 65 N8 (VLT 63%). Even though the VLT of V-kool Elite is higher than Huper Optic and Totalgard, the V-kool has better heat rejection than the other 2 tints. In most cases it should be other way round.

For heat rejection, real word experience from people would be more important than looking at the specs. Even if the VLT of a tint is low (dark tint) which is supposed to provide superior heat rejection, the cheap or lower quality tints with low VLT may have worse heat rejection than good quality tints with high VLT such as my experience above. For this reason I don't look at the VLT or spec anymore if looking for a tint with good heat rejection but people's experiences instead.

However, I will only look at the VLT to determine how dark the tint will look like when installed on the windscreen. Performance I don't look at specs or VLT anymore as it's all just numbers. Real world experience will be more useful than numbers on paper, in my opinion and experience.

Spectra Photosync IRD maybe?
Expensive though. Only one place in M’sia carries that brand afaik, AutoDetailer Studio PJ. Looking at the types of cars they work on, I’d suggest having a defibrillator nearby when you call them to ask for a quote, in case the price gives you a heart attack.

Edit:
As far as real world experience goes, I can only offer V-Kool Elite 70 vs IrisPro Diamond 60, but this isn’t exactly an apples to apples comparison since they’re installed on different cars, where other factors like dashboard length, windscreen slope angle and efficiency of climate control system come into play. Both do a decent job of keeping the cars’ interior cool, but both also still let some heat in on very hot sunny days. Hard to say which is better. Touching the dashboard on the car with Diamond 60 feels slightly less warm most of the time, but on the other hand I often feel overall cooler in the car with Elite 70, but then again that might just be down to the Elite 70 car having ventilated seats blowing cold air up my bum and back.
*
Thanks for the experience. Spectra Photosync IRD doesn't sound familiar. IF it's a high-end price for high-end cars, would skip since I'm actually looking at comparable V-Kool Elite's performance at possibly slightly lower price.

I don't know if the V-Kool Elite 70 is the same as V-Kool Elite. I have the V-Kool Elite installed on the Nissan Sylphy whereas Huper Optik and Totalgard are installed on the same car which is the Ford Focus. Experiences on different cars may not be entirely accurate due to the reasons you have mentioned but it's still considered to be acceptable. It is real world experience that is most important, Most importantly you don't feel the heat on your face inside the car and can feel the difference with different tints although installed on different cars. Irispro Diamond 60, will keep this in mind together with V-Kool Elite which is proven to have excellent heat rejection at high VLT, currently the best tint I have experienced so far.

The same mindset I have earlier. I have VKool Elite installed on all my cars but have been searching for metallized clear tint to replace VKool Elite. Not only is VKool Elite the best clear tint in heat resistant, it also is the longest lasting tint without much degradation in quality. Unfortunately it has been priced out from my budget. Over 4K for Honda City, 5K for CRV spec. At least that is the previous quoted price from VKool HQ.

If you read my post above, I have currently re-tinted both my cars (old City and Civic) to silver sputter Irispro Diamond X series but my Civic windscreen is using the titanium sputter Diamond 60.

Their tints listed specs are great (so are all other cheapo house brand...hehehe) but they have detail description on their sputter spectrum test and additional blue light filtering that no other tints have. Their pricing is still premium although almost half lesser than VKool.

D60 and DX60 VLT are have noticeably lower VLT than VKool Elite very clear tint. Unfortunately, any higher VLT are lower spec tints (Irispro Elite, etc).

I have my old City windscreen VKool Elite measured 63 VLT and Irispro D60 measured 56 on Civic FD, not too much difference but reality is D60 clearly darker (still clear tint, not black darker but lower VLT light darker). The new D60X VLT is even lower...measured VLT 54 (on real life, vs D60, can see the lower lighting difference). So for front screen, D60 might be a nearer option to VKool Elite vs D60X if you want the clear tint here.

On Heat rejection, I have to say, I still think D60 with lower VLT still lose out slightly to VKool Elite....but the silver-based sputter D60X comes near to it...lower, equal or better, can't say for sure coz all based on feeling only, no prove. Issue is the VLT of DX60 seems substantially lower than VKool Elite...so give and take. VKool Elite is the prefect balance of clear VLT and working heat resistant, we can only find something near to its match but so far none is its exact match in clear tint.

For my comparison, I have my City with FWS still using VKool Elite (change windscreen few years ago), side front windows DX60, and the rest DX30 (VLT 22%) at rear. My Civic FD has front tinted D60 (not X), so try comparing from that.

City is definitely cooler than before due to rear DX30 (low VLT, high spec, silver-based sputter). I tried comparing FWS VKool Elite vs side windows DX60. Not apple to apple comparison coz windscreen definitely thicker than side windows. So under the sun, try putting my hand near the windscreen of City VKool vs DX60 side windows. Then put hands under Civic D60 windscreen and DX60 side windows (there is a difference in my side windows coz Civic DX60 side windows have additional layer...aka security tint while City side windows is 1mm thinner...just pure DX60 without additional layer).

My conclusion is DX60 feels similar or slightly cooler than VKool Elite but VKool Elite is still slightly cooler than D60. Problem is DX60 is substantially darker (lower VLT) than VKool Elite. D60 nearer optically to VKool Elite VLT but heat resistant not as good (close lar...)

Please note that the dark here is not VLT30 type of dark but vs VKool clear tint.... but still clear.

Mismatched mixed of tints, right....a bit confusing.
*
Thanks. Yes I've read your earlier post on this thread. The DX series of Irispro are not listed on the website. There's only Diamond series (D60 and D30) and Elite series (Elite 70, Elite 50, Elite 35, Elite 15 and Elite 05). The D60 VLT is 60% so if the DX60 is has a lower VLT than D60, it's a lot riskier already to go with DX60 for front windscreen. If measured VLT of DX60 is 54%, may I ask the advertised VLT of the DX60?

If I am going to change the tint on my front windscreen and possibly the side(front), it's down to these two only, V-kool Elite (front) and V-kool 55 (side front) or Irispro D60 (front) and Elite 50 (side front). The side rear and rear tint are on cheap but dark tints so I would just leave them as they are assuming they are effective to a certain point. Perhaps not excellent heat rejection performance but fair performance. Doing the whole car with good tints will cost a lot so by doing the front and side front will reduce the cost by half.

If I'm not wrong it is 58% for DX60. For D60, it is advertised as 60% and on windscreen real reading is is 56%. The fact that my side windows with single DX60 on City showed VLT 54%, it should be around there. Adding security layer shoot the DX60 down to 48% but windscreen won't use security layer, just the main DX60 tint.

The problem of doing individual window tints is just like ala carte menu. Set menu much cheaper but when you go piece by piece, it is much higher price in general. My initial plan to change the whole car tint to VKool Elite again is VKool Elite front, VK-55 front side and VK30 rear...for Civic, its RM4850 quoted price from HQ for VKool Elite. Did Irispro DX series at near 3K. Diamond series is around 2688 whole package, Elite around 2388. Just tint windscreen alone is RM1600++. So for figure which one is more worth it. That is the previous quoted price. Come March 2024, I figure price might goes up again due to 2% ST taxes.
*
I see, thanks for the pricing. So, V-kool Elite (front), VK55 (front side) and VK30(rear side and rear) costs RM4850 and V-kool Elite whole car only costs RM2388? Big difference there. Might as well just do whole car with V-kool elite if it's just RM2388 and just stick a 2nd layer of cheap dark tint on the side rear and rear. maybe just adding RM200-300 to make it darker for anyone who desires darker windscreens at the rear?? Much cheaper that way than doing the full optimal V-kool option at RM4850?

Looks like Irispro is much cheaper.

Good information thanks. Will inquire when the time is right.
