Hey guys, didnt keep update to date with new ultrabooks in the market but planning to get one for my sister soon.

Budget: 2.5k-3k
Usage- Web surfing, watching a lot of movies, normal work such as word, excel etc.
preferred brand:any
preferred size: any

Weight: It needs to be around 1.5kg or a bit more its ok. As long as its light so I believe ultrabooks will be suitable for her.

infernoaswen There's actually one Samsung Ultrabook but slightly off budget, but the 1080p screen, 128GB SSD and HD8570 discreet graphics card is definitely worth the money IMHO smile.gif

Hey guys, after doing hours of research I have filter out my choices based on my budget & the laptop weight. Mind letting me know the pro/cons on the models I listed out & which I should avoid?

If I missed any models that fits my criteria then please let me know so that I can add into the comparison.

1. Preferred Brand: Asus, Dell, lenovo
2. Budget : below 2.7k for intel i5
3. Usage : Normal usage for sister (web surfing, facebook, movies etc)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 13-14", not need touch screen (dont mind if there is)
5. Preferred weight: Less than 2kg but the lighter the better therefore I am eyeing for the dell vostro 5470 since its very light & cheap.

ASUS
1) S300CA-C1033H, i5-3317U + HD4000, 4GB, 500GB, 44Whrs, (touch 13") [1.76KG] @RM2299->RM1990, 2yrs
2) S400CA-CA130H, i5-3337U + HD4000, 4GB, 24GB+500GB, 44Whrs, (touch 14") [1.8kg] @RM1999->RM1890, 2yrs

DELL
1) Vostro 5470-FS510731MY, i5-4200U, 4GB, 500GB, 51.2Whrs, (Non-touch 14") [1.53kg] @ RM2149, 1yrs
(VOSTRO 5470 5470-20452G-DOS – 14” / i5-4200U / 4GB / 500GB / GT740M 2G / DOS : RM1980)
2) New Inspiron 14 7000 Series, i5-4200U, 6GB, 500GB+32GB, 58Whrs, (Non-touch 14") [1.76kg] @ RM2699->RM2590, 1yrs

Lenovo
1) Ideapad Flex 14-6379, i5-4200U + GT720, 4GB, 8GB+500GB, 4 cell, (touch 14") [2kg] @RM2299->RM2120, 2yrs
2) Lenovo Yoga 13 (Orange) 5936-7909,i5-3337U, 4GB, 128GB SSD (touch 13”) [1.54kg] @RM2660, 2yrs
3) U430T, i5-4200U + GT730M, 4GB, 8GB SSHD + 500GB HDD, (touch 14") [1.89kg]@RM2799->RM2655, 2 yrs
3) S400T 5937-5985, i5-3337U + HD7450, 4GB, 500GB, 4 cell, (touch 14") [1.8kg] @RM2099->RM1850, 2yrs

4) U430-0009, i5 4200U + GT730M, 4GB, 500GB+16GB, (14") [1.85kg] @ ??? (not sure exist or not lol)
Asus - Seems like all the models that fits my criteria are >3k, I am left out with these 2 models but they both seems to be using 3rd gen (outdated) & not very light either (but cheap)

DELL - Vostro 5470 seems to be in my top priority but the price is so cheap I am wondering is there something wrong with it? Its super light too so seems like a great choice, but comes with 1year warranty so I might need to add to extend to 2years.

Lenovo - Seems like yoga 13 is lightest but also using 3rd gen, flex 14 is cheap but heavy. I am so confuse on lenovo choices rclxub.gif

Your sister don't need i5 for her usage. i3 is over-kill smile.gif
The Dell Inspiron 14 7000 is 2kg smile.gif

Vostro 5470, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400 + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm) + (1366x768;touch)@RM2149, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell
Price is RSP, negotiable.
Have a small mSATA SSD for caching, battery run time is decent due to Haswell i3. Should leave enough budget to extend warranty to 3 years ~ RM250.

- Yeah but since budget allows so why not laugh.gif
- Opps my bad, saw wrongly I guess

Alright seems like vostro is the best choice then, will need to go & test it out to see the build quality first. Thanks smile.gif

Nah she won't go anything less than 500gb since she needs storage more than speed. After reading reviews, will probably go for U430T since its a more better choice. Thanks anyways smile.gif

Thank you so much nexus2238. Now I can happily go purchase my new MBA next year. Sometime really feel not so comfortable when making a leap toward a new OS. Especially certain software on Windows I used the most is not available in Mac.

Bro, I got another question, the most identical battery life performance to Macbook Air 13" is Sony Vaio Pro 13" and Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus?

Because currently looking for the Best Battery Life + Ultra Portable, ultrabook/laptop. nod.gif Asking you for opinion which model for the best. Price doesn't matter as long not acceed 4k sweat.gif
*
Last year I checked, asus zenbook battery life was pretty close to the MBA (even the design lol ). Not sure about the upcoming latest models but I think it should be better. Best to read reviews on battery life smile.gif I know Lenovo U430T can give up to 8hours+ but its probably not what you are looking for haha.

my zenbook ux31a using windows 8.1 is pretty sucks... (3 hours plus normal usage)

my 11" mba battery life (8-9 hours normal usage no need charge)

of coz the mba is haswell, the zenbook prime is ivy bridge only...
*
lol something is seriously wrong with your unit then or you are running at full brightness. I can get around 5hours++ with normal usage. Using windows 7. Zenbook with haswell haven't release I think.

ux31a is best with windows 7... dont downgrade to windows 8... life is miserable after getting it...

windows 7 = 5 hours..
windows 8/8.1 = 3.5 hours max...

brightness is at  minimum... coz this laptop is super bright compare to others... even at minimum i want to reduce it... but cant...
*
I see probably not optimized or something. Didn't see the need to change windows 8 since my desktop is using win8 biggrin.gif

his Vostro 5470 has problem with the wifi card, which is a big issue for 5470 users. thats why he is unsatisfied.

Its the range problem right? Is it really that bad for vostro 5470? I was thinking of getting it but now that I am hearing this problem I think I should go for lenovo U430T or flex 14 instead hmm.gif

Thats right bro. Stay out of Vostro 5470. I use my laptop upstairs from the router and I only get 1/5th of the download speed as compared to my IPAD 4, PS3 and my old ACER laptop. What a joke.

The problem lies with the intel Network adapter (N7260). Avoid that and you'll be fine.
*
Thanks for the info.

This model then is a joke then, motherboard doesn't allow ssd & wifi problem laugh.gif If it wasn't a serious issue then I would have gotten it since its the perfect laptop i feel. Lightweight & cheap sad.gif

Asus S300CA-C1050H, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000 + (1366x768;touch)@RM1999, 4GB, 500GB, W8

If I were you, I'd go for this one instead brows.gif

I see the thread starting from december onwards few people have good experience with ASUS service center lately including me (changed mobo & lcd within a week). Cannot confirm if they have improved or not but till today I haven't seen anyone complaining in there yet tongue.gif
