2. Budget: RM2k - RM3k
3. Usage: Surfing the web, movies and light/moderate gaming (Diablo3)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 11-14 inch
Would also prefer laptops that are less than 2kg

Was looking at the Dell Vostro 5470 because it has gt740m graphics card and also only weights 1.6kg.

Yeah, pretty much the Vostro if you want something really light-weight

Hi Gurus

Need some recommendation for notebooks/laptops

1. Preferred Brand: Anything but Apple. Anything means reliable in terms of Support & Service as well as product.
2. Budget: 3k
3. Usage: Business with lots of application testing and productivity tools running - I need CPU speed.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: min 14"

Thanks y'all

Based on PF T.J's recommendation, I checked the specs on the website. But no LAN port, VGA (still need this as some projectors do not support HDMI), no RAM extension bay in case for an upgrade,

Any other recommendations? No HP - always bad experience with its hardware.

If you have specific criteria, please mention in your first post ya icon_rolleyes.gif

Perhaps can consider this one?
14"
Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E440, i5-4200M + Intel HD4600@RM2659, 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W7P + W8P

Those are great, but it doesn't come with Office. Which I will need to pay another 200 bucks for it (I don't trust pirated softwares due to bad experiences). As well as 50 bucks for Antivirus (I don't trust free antivirus due to bad experiences as well)

How does the laptops recommended above stand an advantage over Surface 2? I don't mind not running full windows cause I don't really use custom apps like photoshop etc. And I am very focused on the screen resolution and pixel density cause I use it for movies, Youtube and other video viewing activities (Surface runs at resolution of 1920x1080 and pixel density of 208 dpi). As well as battery life cause I use it in colleges and Uni which I don't really want to charge everytime (Surface 2 have approximately 10 hours of battery life during video playback)
*
No news of Surface 2 in Malaysia yet right? hmm.gif
Anyways, MS Surface are 10.1" in size; your requirement is >11.6"
And you can forget about ports if you are going for a tablet/hybrid brows.gif

But nevertheless its a great choice as long as you don't use less common applications nod.gif

Hi PF T.J

Thanks. I initially thought that new hardwares would still come with the LAN n VGA port by default. Will check out the Lenovo then. Thanks again bro.
*
For that ThinkPad Edge, I'm not sure whether it comes with 2/3 years warranty as default. If not, you 'll have to extend the warranty ya laugh.gif
Otherwise, can upgrade to SSD with the remaining budget brows.gif

by the way, T.J. is a biologist and photographer, so he dont own any IT shops.

QUOTE(Screen @ Dec 18 2013, 07:37 PM)
Well, I don't want to make myself addicted to games again, so I basically "donated" my desktop to my sister and just want to have basic applications and a super clear screen with long battery life. And btw, I requested a >=11", not >11.6" smile.gif

I already have a 500gb and a 1tb external hdd, so storage wont be a problem. Planning to buy a 64gb microsd card too.

Surface 2 is still not out yet, but I am already aiming for it, just dropping by here to see is there any laptops that will change my mind. It is pre-installed with Microsoft Office 2013 RT. It is 10.6" in size, slightly smaller than my requirements but its resolution and pixel density covered that flaw. It does have a HD video out port, a microHDMI port and a USB 3.0 port though. I do have spare adapters to adapt it to suitable hardwares for video output (not trying to promote Surface 2 here icon_rolleyes.gif )

Anyways, thank you T.J for your recommendations, you are truly the laptop specialist in LYN that my friends have been mentioning on and on again. And also thank you xproc for listing out the differences between a laptop and a tablet, as well as recommending me something new  rclxms.gif

Btw, do you 2 have shops in LYP? Or anywhere in KL/Subang/PJ? Maybe I can pay a visit to your shops some day?
*
You are most welcomed laugh.gif
I'm actually waiting for the MS Surface 2 tablets too haha~
But one thing's for sure, its definitely worth the wait, as a lot of new tablets are coming up... Although some may not be as good as the Surface, they do have better warranty supports hmm.gif
I'm not too sure what happens if a Surface becomes faulty laugh.gif

1. Preferred Brand: Any Brand really
2. Budget: Around RM3.5K
3. Usage: Gaming (Battlefield 4, Crysis 3). Web Browsing, Multiple programs on usually like browser, Spreadsheet, videos. Occasional need for portability (not asking for weight but battery at least 3/4 hours would be great)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: At least 14/15 inch. Preferred decent cooling. I want it to last at least 2/3 years

I searched around for quite some time. Hp Envy 15 and Lenovo Ideapad Y510P caught my eye. The Y510P Dual GPU is nice but low battery life from what i see.
