Hey guys, I'm a mechanical engineering student, and my first gen Mac Air just won't cut it anymore. Looking for a laptop around 4k just to run engineering related programs (AutoCAD etc). Looking at the rMBP with 8gb ram, because battery life and portability is a pretty big factor for me.

Any other windows based suggestions?
*
try these :

Illegear RU-14 Pro, i7-4750HQ + Intel Iris Pro 5200 + (1920x1080 IPS)@RM3999[1.9kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), FreeDOS
MSI GE40-2OC-290MY, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GTX760M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM4199[1.9kg], 8GB, 1TB(7200rpm), W8

prices in RRP, negotiable.

Interested. But seems like the Illegear model doesn't come with a GPU? Is that correct?
*
yes but the Intel Iris graphics is capable for your workhorse. the performance similar to a GT650M.

QUOTE(adrianccseng @ Mar 5 2014, 11:56 PM)
after doing some google search, i realize IPS+matte display & i7 quad core should be what I'm supposed to look for..especially for designers. right?
My work seems to be more intense on video editting, 3D animations rather than 2D stuffs with photoshop bla bla..

I do realize laptops with IPS display cost a bomb. I wonder would there be one that fits such requirement, by any chance? Assume I could push my budget to 3.5-4k
*
if you arent going to prioritize weight and bulkiness, this :

ASUS
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4700HQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte)@RM3799[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard

Illegear
RE-15, i5-4200M + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080)@RM3499[2.6kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster Cinema], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i5-4200M - i7-4900MQ] (select 95% gamut screen upgrade option)

p/s: Wondering why ThinkPad T440P and Y410P price gap so much different even the cheaper one is carrying an i7? Bcoz of the Intel graphic card?
*
QUOTE(Kivaa @ Mar 5 2014, 07:37 PM)
And also the y410p is aimed more for the gaming side due to the dedicated graphic card but has no touch capability.
*
the main reason you pay more for the T440 is the materials and build quality is different than what a Y410P can do; they do it to maintain the weight and durability (most important factor for businessmen). so performance is sacrificed in business grade notebooks.

and do remember, Lenovo Thinkpad, Dell Latitude/Vostro, HP Elitebook/Probook, ASUS PRO mustn't be compared with multimedia and other consumer grade laptops.

no particular brand except Dell? i hope you can reclarify this.
your budget is quite limited for an ultrabook but only if you can still find this :

ASUS

ok thanks sifus.
but let me be frank la, no offense ya
just out of curiosity, i wonder why sifus wouldn't recommend me MSI ? I found a few models within my budget have anti-glaring(like matte display right?)+FHD
i.e.
GP60-2OD-034MY, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT740M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM2999, 4GB, 750GB, W8, steel series KB
GE60-2OC-471MY, i7-4800MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3499,8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, steel series KB

oh well, MSI service centres are terrible right? how about lenovo SC ?
*
1. MSI GE60 heats up easier than Lenovo Y510P.
2. Subjective warranty service.

Lenovo's SC is at least better than MSI.

according to notebookcheck, it is 2 floors away from the router but i think it varies between countries or depends on how good your router antenna is.

Hi guys, it seems that Sony is doing promotion on its vaio laptops now and I came across the Vaio Pro 11 and Vaio Tap 11 (i5) at rm3099 and rm2999 which I find it quite attractive. Can I know which one is better? I am looking for something light, portable and yet powerful enough to run engineering softwares like autocad, matlab, etc. And will the small screen with such high resolution be a big problem? Thanks
*
those laptops arent sufficient for you to do those works. those ultrabooks you listed are just for normal and office use. if you want a real power horse, you can look at this :

Illegear
RE-13 Pro, i5-4200M + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080 IPS)@RM3999[2kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster Cinema], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), Backlit Keyboard, FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i5-4200M - i7-4900MQ]

MSI
GE40-2OC-290MY, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GTX760M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM4199[1.9kg], 8GB, 1TB(7200rpm), W8

prices in RRP and negotiable.

i7 4th gen ultrabook not possible with that budget. the only best option you can get is the Dell Inspiron 14 7000.

the 2 that closest and nearest to your budget :

Lenovo
