But I suppose the damage is already done lol... and I think most people wouldn't like to have to keep on sending their cameras back in for cleaning, though I've read that the issue seemed to go away with time and shutter count

The Nikon D3200 and Nikon D5100 are great choices to start your photography journey with yo 
Personally I think Nikon still offers the best cameras for beginners, easy to learn, and not too plasticy or cheap-looking 

its referring to the focus motor built into the camera body or lens. old lens do not have the focus motor and if you are using a d3200 which also does not have the focus motor, your camera is not able to focus. all the new lens "G" model has focus motor built in.

c010 is right, entry level DSLR like the D3xxx and D5xxx series do not have internal Autofocus (AF) motors, so they have to rely on the AF motors in lenses to allow autofocus. There's no real need to worry about this since most lenses that you will use in the future have in-built motor... perhaps except the common 50mm F1.8d. No worries man, just get one and shoot first, develop passion! 

As for D5100 vs D3200, it all depends on whether you need the flippable screen or not
If you like to take selfies/couple selfies, then it will be a great feature 

do you really need an UWA lens just for your trip? how often do you travel and how often do you take landscaping photography? if once in a blue moon, i suggest stick to your 18-105. if you really wanna take wide angle photo, try panorama with your 18-105. below picture was taken with 24-70 panaroma.

A58 is SLT isn't it? Which there's a fixed light loss, and normally you would be using your kit lens to start which has really tiny aperture... =X too little light in --> blur/noisy pic

I've recommended, and also even purchased a Sony NEX-3N for my friends/sister.. overall its an amazing machine, pretty good for the price.. When I went and have a look at the price of their lenses, wah, damn expensive man T____T
Not sure whether its true for Sony lenses though, probably more decently priced 

No brainer isn't it? When you buy DSLR, you are buying the "system" not just the DSLR.

To be frank, no experience  All the Trans X or X Trans sensors are the same anyways, so don't expect BIG differences.
That's right, you buy DSLR based on the brand itself. Nikon is definitely more mature than Sony for this segment of the market... assuming the SLT is against DSLR.

DSLR is more matured than any other systems since its around for so long already haha
Apart from specs, ergonomics and design, you should take note of warranty support (Are there any service centres around your area? If yes, which brand's?) and also your friends' brands (If all of your friends are using Canon, it might be better for you to get a Canon since it will be much easier for them to guide you, and also lend you some lenses to try out) *Of course, I'm assuming that your friends are not those sell fish types la haha

As for Sony devices (in your previous question), I think most of the time people buy from Sony Centres also, not much options

Anything you find fancy, you shoot~
Then from there you will slowly learn about settings/composition/lighting/editing etc.~
Take it slow ya, most importantly is you enjoy the process, and make and preserve memories

For your DSLR, you can just select any Class10 card, especially if you are interested in doing video 

I use Sandisk Extreme or Lexar Professional only 

I'm not familiar with the performance comparisons
But I suppose in the end it all depends on how much you need and can afford?
Both are good enough for photos and video on a DX camera... but if you intend to upgrade in the future, perhaps it doesn't hurt to get the faster one, provided you are not limited in budget 

To be frank, it is not just the speed but reliability. The higher end memory cards are usually binned for better performance and reliability. You don't want to store a lot of memories and then memory card fails on you right? ;-)
