Hi,

I would like to ask how long is the end dates in the student visa for a student which is going to pursue his/her post-graduate studies?

izit length of my course + 1 month?

or length of my course + 4 month?

the end dates in my Entry Clearance Sticker is length of my course + 1 month,

However, I was told by the International Student Adviser of my University that it should be length of the course + 4 month,

but my agent and the staff at VFS said that the additional 4 month is not written in my unconditional offer letter hence onli additional 1 month will be granted.

QUOTE(Arturia @ Sep 10 2008, 02:30 AM)
1) its better if you bring so. here i quote from VFS-uk-my (http://www.vfs-uk-my.com/where.aspx)

"Due to the standard of health care here in Malaysia we do not insist on a formal medical check before an entry clearance is issued. However, Paragraph 36 of the UK Immigration Rules states that on arrival in the UK any person who intends to remain for more than 6 months should normally be referred to the Port Medical Inspector for a medical examination (queues can be long ). Additionally, an ECO has discretion to refer any other person for an examination if necessary.
If you intend to stay more than 6 months you may therefore wish to have a medical check-up shortly before you travel and carry the examination results and a chest X-ray with you. "

2) Not sure bout this. some one else might answer for you. smile.gif

3) you can bring knife or other sharp materials as long as its in ur check in luggage. you MUST NOT bring them in your hand carry luggage or in ur pocket. smile.gif

4) I think its fine. tongue.gif but better check with the others

1. don't take things for granted. get an x-ray at least, which cost you for less than rm20 only.

2. depends, from length of course + 1 month up to 4 months max.

3. yes you can. never in hand carry luggage.

4. better not. copyright issue has been huge in this country. anything copied beyond 5 pages w/o authority can be considered as copyright infringement. there should be problem of bringing it in, but you will be embarrassed to use pirated copy in front of your coursemate/friend. (just my opinion)
Hi youngkies & addedon, Thank You for your replies smile.gif

I will go to Tung Shin Hospital to make a basic medical check up tmr ^^

the hospital seems to know what medical standard they need,

they suggest me to do blood test and chest X-Ray after my mum give them a call shakehead.gif

it's easier for u to come over here and tune ur bio clock here. one of the easiest way is to resist from sleeping the day after arriving. just sleep throughout the flight.

I usually wouldn't feel the effect of jet-lag when I go over to UK.
Will feel the jet-lag only when I come back to Malaysia from UK. So I guess you shouldn't worry too much about that.
My advice is.. go over there, have a looooong sleep, then u'll be fine smile.gif

I will take the advise, Thanks smile.gif

AER is as explained by geminist. you interest deposited monthly will be %AER x money / 12 months.

gross AER is what you get if you dont have to pay tax (not working). nett is after tax if you have to pay tax (working).

mini Cash ISA has quite a good interest rate. or even a typical online saver has abt 4-5% AER. or try saving account from small building society, e.g. post office, they have slightly higher rate than high street banks.
it is fine. even if they doubt those are dvds with copyrighted material, you can just ask them to checked the content. but just tell them they are blank dvds.
*
I am using the HSBC passport account,

they dun give such a high AER,

some more need to pay for subscription fees

I guess I have chosen the wrong account sad.gif

p/s: for mobile phone, izit cheaper in Malaysia compare with UK? same price can get better model in Malaysia?

really? i have online saver with HSBC, a year ago it was abt 5.8% AER (gross) but abt 5% AER now (don't remember if that is gross or nett). with no subscription fees or whatsoever, but a free basic account.

actually I not so sure,

I tried to consult the customer service officer in the HSBC in Malaysia,

but they have no idea what is passport account,

when I email the HSBC in UK, they seems busy and cincai reply my question =(

so I read the terms and condition myself =X (maybe I misunderstood)

well HSBC msia and UK has some differences in account types.

a typical online saver can get you 5.25% AER if you have not withdraw the money, or abt 2.5% if you have withdrawn some for that month.

mobile phone? it is more worthy to get a mobile phone in uk, if you can afford a pay monthly/contract phone in uk. if think you have gbp30 to spare monthly for 12-18 months and going to make use of the inclusive minutes or text messages, it is worth it, in addition you will get a free decent phones.

but if dont use a phone much, a prepay would keep you going contact-able. and with prepay in uk, you dont have to reload monthly to be able to use it monthly. as long as there is money in your prepay phone, you will be able to make a call out.
*
Hi youngkies,

Thank You for your explanation,

for mobile phone I think I won't be calling that often because I already taught my parents to use Skype, so won't be any issue chatting with them (I think) + I am those type which dun hav much friends sad.gif . Hence, I intent to use the prepay type. In this case, will it still worthy for me to purchase a mobile phone in UK? or I should just get 1 from Malaysia before I depart?

for the medical check up, I went to Tung Shin Hospital today, they have a medical check up package for "UK Visa", which cost me RM 154 + RM 20 (for additional Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test because they suspect I am infected by Syphilis sweat.gif). Damn shy when the staff there look at me with their weird expression when they heard the word "Syphilis". (of course the result shows that I am healthy smile.gif)

Thanks again smile.gif

just bring a phone which you already have from home. i mean, u probably use one now, right? just bring that one. then u dont have to worry bout getting a phone in uk. prepaid sim cards are easy to get. much easier and cheaper than a phone (duh)
*gone*

if you have an extra phone in msia atm, just bring it over. saving you the money of getting a new one. if you fancy a mid-high range mobile phone, get it in msia, as it is cheaper.

a prepay low end mobile phone can be cheap in UK, but as cheap as well with more selection in malaysia.
in this case, I think I will just get a mobile phone in Malaysia to save the hassle smile.gif

Thanks for the advise smile.gif

I not sure whether the Passport account and the Online Bonus Saver is the same or not, because my university recommended the Passport account, I think I just stick with this account and switch to other account in future after I know in and out about all those bank account. smile.gif

p/s: for Chest X-Ray, you guys just carry with ur bare hand? I can't fit it inside my hand carry luggage (not in A4 size) and the nurse ask me not to fold it blink.gif

you cant fold it but you can roll it up and put into hand luggage.
international student is allowed only passport account with HSBC for start.
In this case I will just roll it into a scroll smile.gif

I heard from my friend that it is hard to get good grade if study in UK, I mean the lecturer in Malaysia will give tips and close 1 eye when they give mark , however, the lecturer in UK University is very strict in giving marks and no tips will be given, izit true?

In addition, I heard that UK ppl do things in the relaxing way (very slow I mean), will that be any issue if I group with them for my group project? I mean they won't do anything and just show up for the presentation for marks. sad.gif

Why do you want to rely on tips?  If you attend your lectures and study well enough, you usually get pretty good grades.  We complain about the complacency and all the bad things about education system in Malaysia, so now it's a time to not bring that with you.

Also, I would be happier to take exams in the UK because you are graded with what you say, not what the lecturer says.  As I have mentioned again, you are free to present your points and you are graded by understanding, not by you being able to perfectly duplicate something.  Obviously the universal rule of 1 + 1 = 2 still applies, i.e. something only has one answer.

You have these sort of people all around the world, just pick your group mates wisely.  Taking things in a relaxing way doesn't necessary means they don't produce any good results though.

QUOTE(youngkies @ Sep 13 2008, 10:34 PM)
It is not that they are strict in giving marks, but more standardised in giving marks.

They give tips as well if you are lucky, but kinda like, this lecturer A will sets two questions and lecturer B will sets 1 question and bla bla bla.

I am very agree with geminist opinion, doing things slow doesn't mean they aren't efficient and effective. and if you are to meet such group of people, it gives you the chance to practice your skills in leadership and presenting points well.

Thanks for the advise smile.gif

I really scare that I have problem catching up with them. Most of the postgraduate student have years of working experience but I continue straight after I finish my degree without any working experience. Just do some revision or practice myself on the programming code.

No matter what, hope I can get to learn more from this "UK trip" biggrin.gif

I'm sure it will be an interesting experience.  Don't worry too much about catching up etc because you'll end up creating a lot of unnecessary worries.  If you have any problems, you are free to discuss them with your lecturer or ask any questions, they don't shun questions but instead, they welcome it.
If you're coming around this month, don't worry about winter clothing, just have a few jumper with you.  Buy your winter clothing here as they are much much more cheaper.

hehe. okie smile.gif

btw, do the bank in UK have something like fixed deposit? izit application for international student? coz kinda of danger to place all the $ in the current account, some1 might stole my debit card and withdraw it shocking.gif. In addition, the interest for current account is low tongue.gif
