Just food for thought "penny wise, pound foolish".
Your outlay for tuition fee + living cost far outweighs the amount you can possibly earn. If your study is affected, do not work too many hours. This post has been edited by Optiplex330: Aug 25 2008, 10:00 AM |

QUOTE(sense_less143 @ Sep 5 2008, 10:23 PM) Thanks for the post, very informative! Malaysian ATM has maximum daily withdrawal limit. Varies from RM3K to RM9K or GBP500 to 1500. I am pretty sure there is no way you can withdraw GBP10K in one shot.I don't have CC, I have Maybankcard ATM card, and they will charge RM12 when I'm there, but I don't mind as it's instanteneous. And I also plan to withdraw like 10k quids oneshot so RM12 should be cheaper than bankdraft's 0.45%, yeah? Just a suggestion. Open an Malaysian HSBC saving account under joint names with 2 ATM cards. You take one to UK and leave another one at home. Lower transaction fee. And in emergency, you family member in Malaysia can transfer money to you in UK instantaneously. Any unused money, the same family member can also withdraw it out. |

Hi Kalimuthu.
Please tell me more about this Malaysia HSBC Premier account. You are saying...if the parent are Malaysia HSBC Premier account holder and you yourself aren't, there are still benefit? And what sort of UK HSBC are you talking about? Basic Account, Passport Account or Student Account? Or are you say, they open a UK Premier Account for you with no monthly fees? And what sort of Debit Card? Solo? Visa Debit? And must you maintain £50,000 in UK HSBC to qualify? I checked. Credit interest in current account is 0.1% up to £10,000. Not a lot considering RBS gives 2% for Student Account. And Premier saving account interest is 3.2% for £50,000 which isn't a lot either. And which department in Malaysia HSBC you have to approach to get that introductory letter? Very much appreciated. This post has been edited by Optiplex330: Sep 7 2008, 07:19 PM |

Searching the Internet, I came to this conclusion. Correct me if I am wrong.
Available to international student and free accounts, the best bet seems to be either RBS or Lloyds. RBS seems to the better choice because: 1. Credit interest of 2% on your current account. 2. Treat us like UK local students with freebies and debit card etc. 3. I emailed and they confirm available to us on condition the 1st bank draft is GBP5000 but do not have to maintain that figure later on. I do not consider other banks because either not available to international student, or have 0.1% credit interest or have monthly charges or very few facilities. Now I would like to hear from those using Internet bank like Kaupthing Edge with high interest paid. Is it available to international student? Is it safe? Is it convenience? Anything! |

QUOTE(Kalimuthu @ Sep 9 2008, 04:48 PM) at 2k in the savings account your looking at nearly 10quid a month on interests alone .. thats 1 crate of free guiness my friend(with 2 pounds to spare on a bottle of woodpecker haha) . how can you miss out on that ;p Based on that: 2K in Premier Current AC gives you £0.17 per month interest. 2K in Premier Saving AC gives you £5.33 per month interest. I don't see how you can get £10 per month http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/PA_1_5_S5/content/...FcPtE:12ntf2618 |

QUOTE(mushimuro @ Sep 11 2008, 12:42 PM) i'm not sure how it works now, but i got an isic card for myself, and i managed to get my baggage limit to be 30 kgs when traveling with MAS. I think it has to be your first trip as a student, meaning you have to show your visa and all. for those traveling in groups (i.e. scholarship bodies groups), i'm not too sure how this will work out. i STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO FIND THIS OUT BEFOREHAND cause overweight baggage costs a lot. (my dad just reminded me bout this - i got a letter from "someone" after i applied for the extra baggage limit and i showed it to them during check in) http://www.msltravel.com/about_msl.php |

Is Eggs under Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)?
I couldn't find the 1% rebate you mentioned above. Please confirm. But the purchase protection is very nice. http://new.egg.com/visitor/0,,3_11081--View_1766,00.html This post has been edited by Optiplex330: Sep 13 2008, 09:49 AM |
