MMM really funny I replied earlier but didn't seem to stick .

Out of your list , only 1 I consider is Man U . The rest are on a downward spiral.

If you UCL or Imperial is out of your reach then try :

Durham , Bristol , York , Southampton ,ST Andrews , UEA , Bath maybe Sussex etc top 20 up and comers .

Why not get out of UK and try NUS sg and HKU ?

UK fans don't get emotional or flame me , I am only repeating what are facts already printed in UK's own newspapers.

Beware all students and potential students UK :

As fellow Malaysians , we should all try and help our bros to get the best deal possible since UK edu is SO expensive unless there are some who want to hold back info from them , in which case their reasons and motivation for posting is highly suspect

I tell no lies :

http://extras.timesonline.co.uk/gug/gooduniversityguide.php

look at where - university of liverpool, university of manchester, unviersity of sheffield, unviersity of leeds, Cardiff or queens belfast are .

No one in the top 20 .

Anyone wants to know why , can ask me

although uni like manchester and cardiff is not listed within the top 20 uni worldwide, but look at their ranking particularly at some subject e.g. pharmacy etc. uni like oxford, cambridge doesnt even have course like pharmacy, so if you are to take pharmacy course in cardiff/manchester, you are within the top 5 pharmacy school in uk. and although the tuition fees are expensive considering the exchange rate as well, but with some courses like pharmacy, a year of work already can pay back the past 4 years of study.

and lastly, you are very welcome, most welcome to proof your point, advise, why not UK etc, but if you are to disgrace a uni in UK with your stupid comparison, i'm sorry, you wont see your post visible here. and best of all, go and open a HKU thread or whatever. meanwhile i will keep this thread clean from your stupid comparison post without valid healthy arguments. and we have not hold back any info. so far i havent see regulars here whom study/ied in UK has discourage anyone asking abt studying in UK except you, who we have no idea how well you know abt UK. you reason and motivation for posting is highly suspect i would say instead.
*
If I am welcome then why are you being so sensitive and hostile ?

What " disgrace and stupid arguments " are you talking about ?

If you are referring to the Times Uni ranking , In case you haven't noticed , I am not the Times , if you think they are stupid or disgraceful , kindly take it up with them .

Or maybe since you cannot censor them you are afraid to talk to them.

Everything is global now so a relative comparison btwn UK Unis and HKU is valid , give 1 good reason why it is not ?

Where have I discourage anyone asking abt studying in UK ? Please back up claim and don't resort to bully boy tactics just cause you don't like what you hear?

Referencing the Times and stating what are top 20 Unis and what are not is not
" discouraging " in the true sense . A balanced view cannot be " discouraging " .

If I had a personal problem against UK education , I would not have said this :

If you UCL or Imperial is out of your reach then try :

Durham , Bristol , York , Southampton ,ST Andrews , UEA , Bath maybe Sussex etc top 20 up and comers .

I have 13 years experience in the UK including attending UCL , and visited 20 cities in the UK . I do think I know the country and have a lot to contribute.

I suppose you will delete this , go ahead that will only prove my point .

ok, first, thank you. actually i cant afford to study in London, so i cancel my choice for king's or imperial. and then, i choose those university base on mechanical subject.... hope you understand. you can see the link below. besides, from the THES world university ranking, university of liverpool, cardiff, manchester, sheffield is top 100 in the world. hope you give more advice.

Added on August 20, 2008, 5:43 pmok, so one more interest thing. i found the ranking is different from "timesonline" and THES. which one is better for reference? sometimes the university ranking in UK is not that high in timesonline but is high in THES world ranking.....lol.....another thing, i choose the university base on UK ranking or the subject ranking..???? getting more confusing now... rclxub.gif

and....for mechanical subject in timesonline, i cant found university of warwick, oxford, durham.......is that mean they are not good enough or being drop out from the list? screw them, make things stupid!!
*
Well , let's say this anything I say is my opinion entirely and I am not trying to force anyone to follow me unlike some other people.

So , as far a THES vs The Times , I would follow the Times over THES

The times and sunday times have 100's years behind them and are the biggest most established newspapers in UK - that speaks for itself .

Also you must understand if $$$ and global comparison are important to you [ as i said it would be contrary to what others thought] , then why would you restrict yourself to UK U's ?

If you are looking at THES , By the same token HKU , NUS , Toronto , Michigan , Chicago etc are way above Liverpool etc . AND A LOT CHEAPER TOO.

Also facilities matter , and places like NUS and HKU are much more modern than liverpool, cardiff, manchester, sheffield . You want to work with the latest cgis and main frames don't you ?

Reason for this is that all UK U's are gov. owned and the UK gov sector is going broke , it has been for decades , your tutors shold have alerted you to this .

Anyone who has lived in UK for a while will know this as fact.

If you are only comparing UK vs UK U's then to me the Times ranking would carry more weight.

OK, so let have some real discussion, let see... ermm, ok, i follow TIMES ranking. now, im going to choose an university for MECHANICAL ENGINEERING. from the times ranking, cardiff, queen's belfast, and liverpool actually top 10 in mechanical engineering. how you think bout this??? why i chose UK is because it is fast, 3 years to get BEng... or 4 years for MEng.. so?
*
well 1st you prove it to me that this true , the link is dead .

And you think that's new information for people here? American universities look for more well-rounded candidates whilst British ones merely look for the number of A's, which is much easier to achieve than  an excellent all-around application profile. Who's to say those who go to Imperial are less able engineers compared to, say, Stanford?

I don't know what you're trying to prove. And I don't care enough to find out.
*
He's not trying anything other than giving some facts , and I don't he will be too bothered if you care enough to find out.

It's an opinion , just as you have yours ,leave it at that.

I would add of course it is possible for any half decent U to produce good engineers but which is more likely to produce top quality people ?

A place like Toronto with near state of the Art facilities , value for money AND in a thriving glamorous city.

Or

A state U under great $ pressure since it's own Gov is in financial crisis with increasingly out dated equipment , expensive and in a run down part of the country like say Cardiff [ I know I have been to Wales many time and Glamorous is the LAST word I wold use for it , it can't even beat Bristol or Southampton as a nice location never mind Toronto].

Location matters , wonder why ?

There is nothing wrong with Liverpool, Cardiff etc, but I think what he was saying is other universities like NUS HKU Toronto etc offer comparable education at a cheaper price, which I agree with.

Depends what you mean .

Wron and roight as in absolutely - No

But relatively - YES .

If it was me , it is a no brainer NUS HKU Toronto over Liverpool, Cardiff etc any day of the week .

Cheaper , much more glamorous cities , better facilities and better professors.

these places are up and going to rise further whereas Liverpool, Cardiff etc are down and going to drop further.

Sorry that's just the way it is , if the situation was reverse I would say the same thing but it is not.

QUOTE(WillHung @ Aug 21 2008, 03:43 PM)

Explore your options. Don't focus solely on the UK. Really, an extra year in education means little in the bigger scheme of things, and if it saves you money, then it is an option worth considering. Good luck.
*
Agreed , with Uk prices an extra year in HK/SG would come out to the same price maybe lower and you get much more prestige .

The Uk name alone does not command the same respect as it did 20-30 years ago.

Whereas HK and SG is up and coming .

BTW , Bath is a historical , pretty and clean countryside town but the facilities are kind of old and worn out . Don't expect modern high rises with flashy shops.

I mean the place has been around since Roman days . Oh another thing , you better have a car cause the place is DAMN hilly , you try walking up and down - exhausting .

If you have to wait for a bus , very weird experience sometimes - like the bus stop on a 55 ' angle and then you have to board !

Not the worst place in UK , at least the class of people higher and less drugs and crime but there are better places.
