hey, to those who r studying and working part-time in UK, how to be tax-free?
*
erm, if i'm not mistaken, when your pay is not more than GPB5K per year, then your salary will not be taxed. But you can try those chinese take-away (if you are chinese), there are some is tax-free.. tongue.gif you can earn quite a lot if you work in take-away...

What's about the monitor? Did you buy in UK?
Do you think we can use the mobile phone bought in Malaysia in UK?

Thanks.

My friend, I advice you should get a laptop if you coming to Uk for study. Coz it will be very troublesome when you travel from malaysia to uk. you need to carry many gadget for desktop, beside don't forget all those heavy or big stuff like casing, hard disk etc. So i will say get a laptop will be the best.

For mobile phone, you can use malaysia's mobile phone. Last time i came over here, i used the doggy nokia 8250... i think you don't need to get a brand new mobile phone from malaysia, coz in UK you can get free phone when you subscribe 12 months contract with the service provider.. and all those phones are quite lastest mobile phone (if compare with malaysia). hahah... most of malaysia will quite crazy by keep changing their mobile phone for the 1st 2 years. coz they got free phone from the service provider...

Pardon me for asking, Don't the airlines offer students fare for those going over to UK to study?  What about STA site, they claim to be offering students fare.  Not sure whether they have any office in MY.  I can find it from SG office.  The last time, I got student's fare through the press flying KLM to Amsterdam and transiting at the same airport  one way to Birmingham, UK.  Of course, depends on where you are flying too.   Its kind of standard features as what I know.. but now sure it is still now.. By the way, I am from SG.
*
yes, true. Airlines do offers student fare, but there will have a lot limitations.. So what i did is last year, there was an airlines doing some promotions, return ticket (open for 1 year) only cost Rm3200. Beside student ticket only save Rm120++ with extra 10kg and you will need to follow a lot of rules. So try to check with travel agent is there any promotion ticket, then probably you will save some of your money.
Beside usually flight from Malaysia or Singapore will arrive at Heathrow airport... If you want to save some money, you can take coach or train from heathrow (if you fly to heathrow) but this will takes longer time....

azarimy, thanks for the link smile.gif

1. Make like a dozen copies of your recent photograph. You only need 1 for visa, but good to have extra when you reach there or something.
2. Make sure your passport is valid for another 6 months i think.
3. Fill out the sections of the VFS form that you know, don't go there with an empty or half empty form.
4. For financial docs, just throw everything in, RM300k shown should be able to get you your visa with no hassles/interviews. Also don't forget to get your financial docs certified and such.
5. Go there early! Like around 7.30am wait outside and queue for the place to open at 8. If you're lucky you can be done by 9.
6. Enjoy whatever time you have left with friends/family.
*
yeah.. plus you remember to prepare all photocopy of all your document and passport before go to Wisma MCA. Anyway make sure you have all the document in the checklist... just follow all the instruction.
oh.. don't book or issue the air-ticket before you got your visa... And the most important thing is....eat all malaysia's food as much as you can drool.gif biggrin.gif ....you will miss malaysia food when you come over here..... hahahah....

but i was advised to bring original copy of bank statement,so which one is better or is it safer to bring them the certified copy?
*
you will need to bring along the original copy of bank statement, which mean the bank statement has it's bank logo or name. if not, you need to bring to the bank, tell them your bank statement need to certified... the bank offier will know what to do. usually they will hand to their supervisor and the supervisor will put the bank stamp and he/she will sign on it.. this is what we call certified. it's mean the bank statement is confirm and certified from the bank.
But if your mom or dad or anyone who going to sponsor you to future studies, if they got any Fixed-deposite, u can just submite the FD along (but you will need to make a photocopy on the FD). it's another way to proof the finiancial document.
good luck guys... smile.gif

but for the safe side, change your airticket to 14th, instead leave on 12th.. beside you don't know what is the visa officer's mood. if he/she in good mood, then you will pass with it.. otherwise, you might have problems with it...
good luck my friend..

Is it possible to check in my carton of maggi mees?
*
yes, possible.. But if you didn't exceed your quota.

For those who going fly from KLIA to UK, please make sure you don't bring any water or liquid.. Although you bring a bottle of water before you boarding, they will ask you to finish it before boarding..This is what happen to me when i flied last month by MAS.
For check-in luggage, normally is 20kg (for MAS) but if you taking student ticket, should be more. But for those normal ticket, 20kg, you will have extra quota which is 5kg. They will give you check in the maximum 25kg when you exceed. But you have like 30kg+-, you can try check-in as earlier as possible like 3/4 hours earlier before boarding. Another important thing is, find those friendly officer. Try to smile at them, talk friendly and make some nice joke with them. then if they are happy, probably they will you go through. haha.. this is what we usually do... tongue.gif

For hand-carry luggage, they seldom will weight it. But try to use smaller bag, they'll think it doesn't more than 10kg. And remember don't put any smelly stuff or food. otherwise you will quite susah with it.

Another thing, if you are bringing any smelly or 'illegal' food into your check-in luggage, remember you used some thing like clothes cover on top and put in plastic bag as many as possible, so that no any smell... coz when the big black dog (at the heathrow custom) smell something from outside your luggage, you will in deep trouble... Last time, my friend's food was rampas by the custom...

Good luck on those who going to fly to UK.... smile.gif

Liew, since u said that we aren't allowed to bring water and any of form of liquids on board. I just wanna ask, does shampoos consider as a form of liquid? Because i am planning to bring shampoos and tooth paste there myself.
*
ops, sorry... i meant was check-in luggage... tongue.gif
well, guys, please don't bother bring the shampoos and body shower, coz they are very cheap over here. There's always have promotions, so save some space and weight for malaysia's food or stuff that you can't get any from here. About the tooth paste, erm, you can bring 1 or 2. anyway it's not that heavy anyway (this you must check-in).

QUOTE(youngkies @ Sep 17 2007, 08:30 PM)
are you sure? £1.5 can get a piece of blueberry cheesecake only.

no.. they allow, but no liquid material in  hand luggage.
you are allowed to carry those in check-in luggage, not in hand luggage only.
*
yeah, £1.5?? I thought the cheapest Starbuck is £3++
i don't think so, coz last month i left from heathrow, you only allow bring ONE bag to pass the custom (don't care it's big or small). Well, you can put the pouch into the hand-carry bag, then when you passed the custom, only that you take it out. that should ok.

QUOTE(DannGun @ Sep 18 2007, 06:38 AM)
Perhaps it is too expensive in the UK! But i recommend you to put shampoos, soaps and liquid things in your check-in luggage! Don't carry it onboard!
BTW, anyone here living in the UK?? I'd love to study there, at University Of London. the food there very expensive??
*
erm, shampoos are not that expensive.. Tesco or ASDA always have promotion on those stuff...why don't you save the space and weight for those stuff can really expensive. erm, i think living cost in london will be quite higher compare with others places... I heard a plate of fried rice cost around £6++ ... I willing to spend the £6 to get the food from Tesco or market and make my own fried-rice. hahah.. laugh.gif

For me, i'm using phone card which bought from London. I was told, if you bought the phone card from london, it will be cheaper. I buy the phone card for £7++ and i think it has 1200 minutes. you can call the number via your mobile phone (it will use your free minutes--if you are using monthly plan) or landlines(i heard it's free during evening and weekend).

anyway there's another option is, using Orange's Livebox. It's a unlimited broadband and you can make call back home (asian country like china, singapore, malaysia etc) unlimited.... your phone will connect to the livebox and you can call directly back home. If i'm not mistaken, it's using VOIP.
It's not very expensive, i think it's around £20++...

Hey. Im a student at Imperial college. Fresh from Malaysia for just 3 weeks. I notice that i tend to lose more hair compared to being in Malaysia. I shampoo once a day before i go to bed. Anyone can share any experience?
*
well, your hair will get very dry and easily drop if you wash daily.. because the water is quite different with malaysia coz it having quite a lot of chlorine and others mineral.. So the prevent get dry, use conditional when wash hair... and you don't need to wash daily... probably 2 days one time??

if after i sign a phone contract with orange, can i send the free phone back to msia?i mean there is no restriction abt what i m gonna send back msia as in they will treat my phone as so called "illegal phone" rite?by the way,the phone should not have any problem when using wif msia network operator sim card rite? Please advise. notworthy.gif
*
you can send it back to malaysia as long it's not locked.. if your orang phone can works with O2 or others network's sim card, then it's work with malayisa's network like maxis or digi. But remember, when you want to send to malaysia, i advise you do not send via mail...coz quite high chance your phone will not deliver to your house(malaysia). If you are going back to malaysia, also don't bring too much mobile phone.. if malaysia custom found out you have more than 2 phones with you, they will take it .. well, if you are lucky enough, then nothing is happen... wink.gif

i don agree wif u ..i knw master is good..but placement also not bad for having it...if u done good iin ur placement..u got high chance to work for tat company after graduating..
*
yes, I agree. When you finish your placement, you will have very high chance to work with the company (with condition you have good record and able to impress your line manager). Those who has placement with the company, you will have the priority when you apply for their graduate scheme. This means that your CV not going to filter out like others graduates before they invite graduates for Assessment day. Beside placement for 1 year, you get the chances to learn and gain working experience. Working and studying is totally different, you can't learn everything in Uni. Summer internship is not a bad choice, but it's the time problem. you don't hv much time to understand company's operation and not much stuff to learn.
For Master, it's a training on your thinking. Postgraduate and undergraduate the different is the way they study, how to analyses the problem. Both have pro and con.

*
yeah, agree... the broadband is really damn shit.. some of the service provider has 'fairly use policy'... when you download movie or big file or another words you use too much bandwidth, you receive a warning email.. that's happen to me now, mad.gif it state that you don't download file during peak hours (6pm-11pm) blah blah.... hey, that's the only hours that I'm in the house, what do they expect us do with the broadband since we can't download files when we are free. doh.gif really shit, so for those friends who going to get broadband, please make sure you guys don't choose those who has 'fairly use policy'...

what broadband are you using? BT?

that is why it is quite advantageous to use virgin media
- cable broadband = more stable connection, easy setup, cheaper router, is not affected by how far is your house to the exchange station
- no limit at the moment
- no need for a phone line

disadvantage
- customer service and management has became worst since virgin took over.

Added on November 2, 2007, 2:24 am

what is the provider? AOL? i dont think it is a cable modem.

20kbps is real bad.
*
No, it's tiscali... coz now my housemate got the phone line, so i share with her. i didn't get one phone line coz i don't need it, just waste my money for the landline. I know virgin doesn't need phone line but i heard the customer service suck. my friend told me if you take virgin just pray your broadband alright after setup for the whole year...

hehe.. i know i can download during midnight (tongue.gif i'm those kind ppl suddenly want to watch this do that) , my friend told me just download during daytime and let my laptop on even i'm not in house... well, no choice these are the only ways if i want to download stuff... haiz.. until i get my own broadband.
