Yes you do need a hard disk, I also have the same issue. I bought a copy of the game (original disk) but can't play it on my console bcos it requires a hard disk which I sadly do not have since mine stopped working. The hard disk requirement is clearly stated on the back of the disk, assuming you bought the original disk I'm using xbox360 slim 4G. I bought Battlefield 4 local dvd disk but can't play.
