great news! clevo's 980m works well natively in aw17/18, without bios/vbios modding (a.k.a. plug and play, literally). previously aw18 was reported to be unable to run slevo's 980m.sli. it turned out that it can. the catch is to run them in uefi mode biggrin.gif (w8.1 was confirmed to work. let's see if w7 uefi will work as well)

So, Alienware laptop user will need to acquire another knowledge about what is GPT or MDR when format windows to UEFI mode when upgrade to GTX 9xxM. Haha...
*
lol yeah they should because these are basics for systems today. the whole thing is actually simple if you starts fresh.

disk type conversion is easy. all you need is to boot a single-disk machine with windows install disc/usb, press shift+f10 to call out the command prompt, type diskpart > sel disk 0 > clean > convert gpt, then proceed as usual. since w8.1 defaults to uefi mode install it will take care of the rest.

i choose to pull all other disks out except for os drive because i know i am careless.

Bought from Putochip around 2 months ago with awesome price. if not mistaken around 3.5k. This baby really make me happy until now  thumbup.gif . I just upgrade to SSD Evo 840 and thinking to upgrade to 16GB of RAM. With power adapter 240W is it ok to put more RAM?

[attachmentid=4236921]
*
a good buy smile.gif yes 240w is sufficient for your configurations with 770m and 16gb ram.

Just apparently 980M does work on R4 biggrin.gif.. sadly doesn't works on R3.
Now lets see who brings in 980M update kit here.
*
really? i'm still not sure about this? where did you find the information?

QUOTE(e_mc_square @ Nov 29 2014, 12:06 AM)
I can bring but I doubt people will buy with that price.

Clevo GTX 970M RM 1999
Clevo GTX 980M RM 3299

No la bro. No trade in.
If trade in I "eat" very low price. I am quite sure no people want to trade in with my offer.  tongue.gif
*
right. that's crazy. it's like 3x gtx.980 for a desktop, or a complete stock aw18 (imported set) with 4910mq and 880m sli.

normally there is no future for old parts if they're still with you. you will never looked at it again when you have a better card.

backup makes more sense.

Note: for those who wish to upgrade their gpu in m17x r4, don't go for 880m.

From my extensive tests after updated everything to the latest under w8.1 in a m17xr4, it's true that all latest drivers are crippling performance of the card, resulting in very terrible performance for gaming.

The only place it can go now is aw17/18 with the right vbios.

What a disappointment :/ nvidia has done something to make their own product to run at lower than advertised speed ://

To owners of Alienware that require 330W PSU (Power adaptor), you can buy it at reasonable price here:

XM3C3 ADP-330AB B DA330PM111

I have nothing to do with the seller but just to help Alienware member here if anyone required it. I do not guarantee or promise anything but for me, mine arrived just now and  I am using it with my M18X R1 without problem.

Cheers.... smile.gif

You are right bro. The PSU brick is much thicker and the cable too compared to 240W PSU.

hi guys,

its been a while since i have been here. sadly, i am letting go my alienware m17xr4.
the sales thread is here https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3432377

i am not actually here to promote my sales, just that... i dont know how much to sell it for. do you guys have a reasonable price to start with? spec is in the thread.

thank you all, its been nice owning an alienware.

peace smile.gif

edit: nampak sgt lama tak masuk sini... lot of news la....
nowdays m17xr4 can put in 780/880/980 already? hmmmmm hmm.gif  drool.gif
maybe i should just upgrade the gpu then...anybody want to upgrade their gtx660m to gtx770m? hehehehehe

edit no2: now i remember why i dont come here often...damn poisoning la this thread...hehehehe.. i saw horns running 880m at r4 a few pages back.... really kicks in the poison...  rclxms.gif good night all...zzzz
*
hehe don't treat it as poisons lol! m17x r4 can still be good if you put in good stuff. in your case, a 3840qm cpu, and 780m (for now). that's if you're still keen on keeping it.

by the way 880m didn't work quite well than 780m in the laptop. the recent drivers somehow make it run very nicely in benchmarks and have good scores, but not when you play games. it has serious throttling in-game when under loads.

980m is the most promising card for now, but whether it will work fine or not i am not sure. sometimes people tend to say things work, without telling you caveats / details.

in that case, maybe you just report to dell malaysia. they should be able to send a copy to you.

you are the first person who owns a aw13. maybe later you can tell us about AGA biggrin.gif

I got the same issue on my R4. But I wanna try to reinstall windows first. If not then I'll buy new pair from Ebay (y)
*
wow still haven't refresh it? you can just create a system image and do your things. if something is wrong just restore the whole thing.

if you have windows pro edition, just use the virtual desktop feature to try out first.

Base on realible information. The new Alienware 17 will come with GTX 980m and support the graphics amplifier and also touch screen. Glossy or anti glare display for you to choose. But sadly, they seems like removed the tron-lIke light on the left and right of the chassis to make it slimer just like AW 13. I suspected new Alienware 17 will using the soldered version o 980m instead of mxm.
*
that's a rather sad news. i was reading another news about instability of clevo's 980m in m17x r4 just now. read a rumor that 980m in new aw17 is actually a 4gb vram version also.

but i think its seriously a overprice piece of gadget

we have a different view on this. the main concern to me is the continuous issues in other brands regarding parts warranty support. i have had some cases with local distributors that gave me nonsense that i was not told up front, even if i tried to communicate with them proactively before those outcomes (only to hit their silence walls on many occasions).

dell support saved me a lot of time and frustrations when there were issues in the past. instead of asking me to do carry-in and after that wait for months with unknown status, they come and deal with issues with good and right parts.

without the above, i might agree that aw is overpriced.

i agree with you. Competition brand would say AW is overpriced. But now i can see AW 17R4 with GTX880M price tag RM7999, imo their price is getting more competitive PROVIDED with ACCIDENTAL WARRANTY COVERAGE which only available by AW
*
competition is good for consumers in general. tbh recent news from other brands are welcomed, even though some brands decided to leave us. razer, gigabyte, and especially aftershock give us more options rather than previous monopolies (the price of aftershock titan v2.1 with 980m sli is really competitive i must say. there is a w-15 now. maybe later we will have a w-17 hehe).

options wise we do have a lot. however the key point is still the actual commitments of local supports. imo everything should have both products and warranty services delivered properly. you do this well, you get a lot of costumers.

we all know it's not easy, because after all these years many well-known brands still continue to fail deliver their offers properly. mostly, except dell.

note: a surprise. m17x r4 non-3d has all it takes at everything stock to run 980m biggrin.gif some guys at techinferno.forum has upgraded it. the catch is to enable optimus.

now the issue is the 3d version.

Yup, just mod the inf. But Alienware 17 have to run 3Dmark11 all the time to make the GTX 980m enabled. Else it will always run the Intel graphics
*
wow thanks a bunch for the heads up.

yes for m17x r4 it's just .inf mod. for aw17, that cannot even be called as 'working', like what those card sellers are advertising.
