Hey guys just wondering, What thermal paste would you all recommend for M14x R1?
*
arctic cooling mx-4? actually any decent thermal paste will do. the most important thing is still to make sure to clean up the vents and fans regularly.

sometimes when we look too closely to those comparison charts about thermal pastes, we forget about how indifferent in the differences. between the 'best' and not so good ones, the temperature difference is not really significant (3c?)

I wish to know the part number of the 55W HSF too, but I still unable to find them.
Anyway, even I have a 3840QM lying around, highest end non extreme edition for Ivy Mobile, it is still 45W only, while all Extreme Edition processor is 55W, I gonna check some review and find out, or else i stick to 45W can liao brows.gif

Thanks bro, I bought an empty body and throw in all the things, got the body without processor, ram, graphic card, harddisk, ROM and etc, like i said, empty body sweat.gif
So i just korek something in my store room and build an Alienware with CTO spec brows.gif

Alienware M17X R4
Intel Core i7 3840QM (Using R3 HSF with Liquid Metal Ultra)
OEM Alienware M17X R4 HM77 motherboard
Kapok HD7970M with Dell VBios (Using EBAY bought HSF with Liquid Metal Ultra)
A-DATA 2x8GB 1866Mz RAM
Plextor M6M 128GB mSATA (HDD Cache)
Intel 520 Series 480GB in RAID 0 ( Total 960GB)
WD 1TB Scorpio Blue (ODD Caddy)
Old school Killer N1103
Dell Mini 375 Bluetooth

Theoretically, I spent more than a new R4 or M17 sweat.gif
But so far, the temperature is very impressive.

My 7970M idle @ 48c load <70c in all games
My 3840QM idle @ 50c load <80c in all cores loaded.

Soon I gonna strip down again and paint the laptop, still deciding which color to go to.
I prefer plastic dip as I have experience when I mod Projects for my customer.

I salvaged the 375 from a R3 laugh.gif janji boleh pakai!!!
380 is much better?
*
.. don't use pink, please :/

ah.. it's nice to not waste them when they are still usable smile.gif i am not sure if it's good. it's just the default in an r4.

please don't say that. i am not rich, seriously :/

QUOTE(AceCombat @ May 25 2014, 11:42 AM)
You have to buy very very very very very high quality chrome wrap to wrap a laptop as normal chrome sticker, they are hard and cannot bend or flex one. biggrin.gif

My customer R3 that I modded was pink, plastic dip biggrin.gif
*
pink takes away the macho'ness of r4. bad.

plastidip is nice to use. can revert easily. previously i sprayed an r4 with it too. (too bad it looked too ugly so i just removed it lol!)

alienware with a valid warranty is not overpriced. without it, yes. (normally people are looking at tangible part of the deal, and forget about the equally important but intangible part, i.e. the after sales tech and warranty support)

8 beeps is usually about lcd screens (lcd screen failure). (i got hit with that once. it's due to lcd cable issues caused by my itchy hands; NOT factory defects)

no, dell helped.

edit: there was a lcd issue after transporting the laptop from one place to another. i was trying to fix it, but failed. then dell came and helped.

Besides the 8 beeps, do you have any other problems using the m17x?
*
none. all the 'issues' were actually caused by myself (fixed by myself also. all except the damn lcd cable :/)

edit: it's a long distance trip. i suspected that the rough road conditions caused the display to not work when it arrived. (well i should say it partially worked because the screen showed everything, only with distorted colors)

Ahh ok. Is there any way to prevent the lcd failure?
*
er.. if that happens do not try to fix it yourself, leave it to dell? i told you that incident was purely my fault haha

normally it will not happen. (i have brought the laptop to many places also. local and overseas. no problem.)

looks like i need to be extra carefull with aw....i thought aw models supposed to be sturdy and all...btw, do you have any tips on maintaining the battery life on m17x r4...my previous acer laptop's battery busted after hours of gaming hehehe....
*
uh? sorry to make you think that aw is so weak in terms of build quality haha! no you don't need to have extra precautions of any sort. just use the laptop normally. it is sturdy and well-built.

batteries these days have charging protection to help prolong its lifespan. (i.e. it will not charge when the battery is above 95% full). i always put my battery in. after more than a year's use this way, the wear level is just 12%.

by the way the battery is for you to do light tasks with your laptop, not gaming. (by gaming i mean bf4 kind of games, not freecell or solitare) always connect to an external power source (plugged in) when you game. do not ever game on battery only, because battery power alone is not enough to feed the cpu/gpu during gaming (you will get lousy performance and experience), plus you stress the battery even more. (it's like your ac adapter, if you use a low-power ac adapter to play games, it will get stressed and hence result in much shorter lifespan)

8 beeps is rare to be happens, mostly happends on 3D model or 120hz LCD.

8 beeps isnt the major issue on M17xR4, as it doesnt have major issue.

Technology stuff mostly depends on your luck whether u are 'lucky' enough to get the problem unit.

1000 unit i might have 2 to 3 % problem, meaning 30 out of 1000 will be having factory default failure
*
oh. i have a good unit. my 3d r4 is very steady biggrin.gif

QUOTE(riku2replica @ Jun 6 2014, 05:52 PM)
well, that's just lemon unit from certain batch. Bad caps or hardware provided. It can still happen. biggrin.gif nod.gif
*
it happens everywhere. the question is still how manufacturers respond to it. i don't know about others, but for aw, i can tell you they keep their words.

Thanks for the info. Saved me the trouble of wasting a few bucks. Anyway, i might visit Lowyat in next coming weeks. Can you tell me which shops that sell alienware laptops, preferably the 17?
*
there is a dell shop at ground floor, main entrance. or, another shop at top floor. this one has a number of gaming laptops and accessories (forgot the name)

I'm having a dilemma here...it's not surprise that alienware models require a lot of money, but with that amount i can buy cheaper laptops like the RX-17 with similar specs. It's a very tough for me  to decide and that's why i need your help, guys. I'm sorry in advance if I'm asking in a wrong place.
*
actually, i don't really understand what your problem / dilemma is. please share. unless we can understand what caused your dilemmas, we can never give you sensible answers.

if it's just about the price point, well, just go for rx-17 and be happy smile.gif

QUOTE(BotakPrince @ Jun 8 2014, 02:07 PM)
Hey guys a quick question:-

I bought my AW 14 from lowyat in march 2014. I saw that the ship date for my machine is Feb 2014.

I tried to run a check on the web site for the purposes of warranty extension from Dell only to find that some warranty starts to run from May 2014, and some from Feb 2014..... I am quite confused here. why is that?

Also, the main question here is how do i extend my warranty? I tried clicking alienware laptops from the catalog but it shows me this

For Adamo: Extended 2 Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis [add RM 877.00]

Do i call Dell straight for the ease of things?

Also, for warranty to all Alienware laptops i was told that it covers accidental damage such as drop, dents, water etc etc or rather known as the complete coverage warranty - is this true?
*
for warranty extensions, you can talk to sales agents at dell for quotes. or, you can contact putochip123 for the same. just state clearly what you want for warranty extensions.

I've placed my order for Alienware 17 in Dell website. Then I rechecked again the specs to make sure all of them is correct and i found out this thing - "Alienware 17 R1 - Ranger System Driver"...does this mean Dell sells outdated aw17 version?
*
aw 17 r1 is the latest. don't be confused with the previous m17x r4. when we said r4 it means the previous version of aw.

don't worry you will get what you ordered.
