yeah saw that a while back. that sick mod is really tempting :/

however i rather build a desktop, instead of applying this mod to 18, because i can just put whatever psu that i want, safely.

I'm surprise M18x board can withstand that high wattage with no issue.
*
haha.. it's packed with all those power-hungry components. they have to prepare for the worst, because once these beasts reach the users, all hell breaks loose biggrin.gif

lol maybe that's over prepared biggrin.gif

now with the new 18 equipped with 4940xm and 880m 8gb vram sli, there might be someone crazy enough to mod the similar one soon.

That psu mod gave me an idea for those who needs Asus G Series adapter. Instead of buying from Asus. A mod like the AW could be applicable with 2x 90W(estimate max 180w) AC adapter from LYP.
*
wo. hm yeah it's quite possible to do that, except imo it's not economical. and risky, too.

Currently, AW17 cannot be ordered thru Dell website anymore. I think they are stocking up the new components.
*
.. and it's back! jeng jeng jeng new aw17 with shiny 4910mq and gtx 880m!

edit: forgot to say, this time cpu (from 4900mq, up to 4940mx!) and memory (up to 32GB) can be customized!

Guys, any ideas? I'm totally screwed!  cry.gif

Long story short, was cleaning up the vents as usual on my M15x, as it was starting to overheat. So in order to do that there are tons of stuff to remove, so after cleaning it, I'd noticed that non of the screws on the heatsink for the CPU side are able to get back into the holes, then only I'd noticed that the holes are just holes, nothing to hold the screws in anymore. My guess it due to the heat and everything, the holes that were ok before were too hot and dry till they crumbled, so now I can't seem to fit the screws in and the heatsink is having problems contacting, so the heat does not disperse properly.

What do I need to change? The whole motherboard?  icon_question.gif

user posted image

The four holes that seems different from this picture is that this has like metal parts, mine totally black, just holes.  cry.gif
*
oh when you took the cpu heatsink out you didn't notice anything weird? perhaps the screw holders were still attached to the screws?

Nope, not there at all. It was loose to start with, so I didn't had any difficulty like the first time removing it.
*
the person to talk to is putochip123. meanwhile, you could try to fix this by replacing the screw holders with something else. it's a temporary measure, and the chance are slim to fix it properly.

I personally like matte screen because its not that glary like a mirror. But most of the time I use my laptop indoors maybe wont be so bad biggrin.gif

Personally have not used a glossy screen before time will tell tongue.gif
*
ah it's all about personal preference haha. a glossy screen is reflective but the color quality is really nicer.

need some skills to get chrome wrapping though. one simple mistake and wrong tool can lead to air bubbles or visible scratches.

yes that needs some serious skills, and a lot of patience. (both i also don't have lol!)

guys my wifi killer 1103 died a long time ago actually. My question is can i plug in any wifi card in m18x r2? is there a list about  which wifi cards are compatible ...for the time being i just want to get cheap wifi card intel 5100 or 5300 to use for short term.

Can i get it within rm 50 in lyp?
*
i'm not sure if there is a compatible list for wifi cards. the cards that work for me beside stock are intel 6235 and 7260 .ac.

notes: weird stuff - this is the first time i need to reinstall the nvidia driver twice to get it to work. (the 3d vision driver failed to install the first time i tried. it worked the second time. never happened before.)

337.81, new beta. if you're interested:

Imo, the rcent driver from nvidia is abit worse thn the olde driver. If not encountering any problem, dont update is better
*
Yeah normally that should be the way. If the thing doesnt break dont fix it.

I just wanna test these latest drivers out for fun haha! Before doing anything i always create a system image first.

Hi...after much consideration....i decided to go for Alienware desktop...

just a few questions

-is the alienware aurora now a bit old? (from the website it's still ivy bridge), is a new 1 coming soon?
-i wanna run d3, witcher 3 on high setting...which spec should i get?
-x51 sufficient or do i need aurora?
*
Aurora R4 has a x79 chipset, for now yes it has at least a 4820k ivy bridge-e (max is 4960x), max ram of 32gb, and it can do sli for certain gpu's, particularly 700 series nvidia cards. (Provided that the bundle psu, 875W, can supply enough power to the cards)

Aurora is a higher end desktop. You can just plug in whatever gpu you want in aurora to meet the game requirements. (Again this is subject to the power requirements of the gpu)

Perhaps there might be a refresh next year or a year after that (hopefully x99 chip, ddr4 ram, full sata3 ports, etc.)

Not sure about x51.

Just wondering. Is there a point of buying straight from Alienware anymore? Before there is the custom nameplate option, but they removed that and there isn't a whole lot of customisation available. Basically none.
*
QUOTE(Fortunatus @ May 20 2014, 07:23 PM)
Yea I wanna know this as well... Seems quite pointless buying on9 nowadays...
*
is this about the name plate only? what do you wanna customize? recently alienware has allowed the users to customize their machines again. (in terms of common parts, not name plate). for the ODD, you can always swap the dvdrom and replace it with a hdd caddy. (compared to R4, it's much easier to replace)

many still choose to get it online because of the 0-interest installment scheme.

I want to customize the aurora to have killer card , but I don't see the option , is it possible to do by myself? Is it compatible ? Or any other wireless option? Thanks.
*
oh the wireless part in Aurora desktop. yes for machines from Dell US there is an option for wifi (Dell Wireless 1540 802.11a/n Dual Band, High Speed Wi-Fi). afaik, it's a just plastic plate with Dell WiFi and Bluetooth daughter boards that can be secured to the inner front of the chassis, and connect to the master i/o board; and it's a .n, not .ac (it's a different form factor. i'm not sure if they offer killer wifi. don't be so obsessed about these killer wifi things. you still need to have a compatible router to make full use of it).

for machines from Dell Malaysia, usually the options for customization is less than Dell US. for instance we only have the standard water cooling unit, while dell US also offers a premium copper-type. (but this doesn't mean it's a bad thing. we can still add/replace features that we want by ourselves). just bear in mind it's super easy to just DIY with better parts. (think wifi usb or pci-e wifi. all plug-and-play. the only 'incompatibility' happens when you forget to install the drivers) currently i am using asus usb-56 wifi. works fine with asus ac-66 router. (well, i don't actually use it because for a desktop i still prefer to use wired ethernet).

if you wanna know more about this, putochip123 is the guy.

ok ...i'm not obsessed with killer thing....just wanna the wireless to work because there is no cable here. So what are my options? Buy the part and install myself? If yes, where can i get it? And let's say I cant install myself, will a Dell personnel able to help me?
*
right smile.gif all i'm saying is that we have options for wifi cards that deliver decent performance in the market. the killer wifi might not work at its fullest in all environments. it still depends on the router for that.

your option is simple. go for usb (it's just like a usb thumb drive with an antenna). the installation is as simple as plug in to the usb port, install driver, reboot and go.

http://www.asus.com/my/Networking/USBAC56/

you can get it from lyp. sorry i can only suggest what i am using. as for the need of technical help, i believe you can call for their help if necessary.

Just go to LYP and buy the part separately. Self installation for a wireless NIC card isn't that hard. They come with instructions anyways. It's just plug and play. If u don't like internal ones, u can opt for USB ones.

The pro for using a USB one is u can shift around the receiver to get the best signal, but the con is u get to stare at ur receiver.

The pro for using an internal one is u don't get to look at ur receiver and it's well integrated, but the con is u can't move ur receiver around to get the best signal cos ur desktop is rooted at the place that u decided to put.

Final verdict, it's ur call.
P/S: Dell personnel won't help u to install 3rd party stuff one unless u order directly from Dell but then, it's super straight forward. Plug and play.
*
you don't get to see the receiver if you use the usb port at the back of the pc biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, now I remember. Nowadays USB receivers don't give u a standing dock or any extension cords unlike the old days.

But then good luck in looking for a good signal with all the stuff that's blocking the signal. tongue.gif
*
yes, these days we have so few things in the box :/

yeah signal blocking might be a problem. hehe again my router is near my desktop so i am not worried about that.

this is the stable speed of the usb wifi that i am connecting to my home router.

Attached Image

since i have enabled both wireless-n and -ac, i have set this to .ac only (device manager):

Attached Image

it's not the max speed (866.7Mbps as with intel 7260)

notes: the broadcom .ac adapter in aw17/18 CAN run at full .ac speed after all!

i was always curious why broadcom .ac adapter could not run at 866Mbps when coupled with asus rt-ac66u. after playing for a bit with the adapter in device manager, it turned out that the default settings in the advanced tab are basically for maximum compatibility.

after i have set the band preference to 'prefer 802.11a', things have changed. now it's running at full speed biggrin.gif

Attached Image

edit: and now officially aw supports intel 7260.
