Wow the new AW17 looks nice anyone know whether the display is 60hz or 120hz?
*
standard 60Hz. 120Hz is for 3D, and you will pay a load of bucks for that.

need some skills to get chrome wrapping though. one simple mistake and wrong tool can lead to air bubbles or visible scratches.

Thanks bro, I bought an empty body and throw in all the things, got the body without processor, ram, graphic card, harddisk, ROM and etc, like i said, empty body sweat.gif
So i just korek something in my store room and build an Alienware with CTO spec brows.gif

Alienware M17X R4
Intel Core i7 3840QM (Using R3 HSF with Liquid Metal Ultra)
OEM Alienware M17X R4 HM77 motherboard
Kapok HD7970M with Dell VBios (Using EBAY bought HSF with Liquid Metal Ultra)
A-DATA 2x8GB 1866Mz RAM
Plextor M6M 128GB mSATA (HDD Cache)
Intel 520 Series 480GB in RAID 0 ( Total 960GB)
WD 1TB Scorpio Blue (ODD Caddy)
Old school Killer N1103
Dell Mini 375 Bluetooth

Theoretically, I spent more than a new R4 or M17 sweat.gif
But so far, the temperature is very impressive.

My 7970M idle @ 48c load <70c in all games
My 3840QM idle @ 50c load <80c in all cores loaded.

oh my, sounds like you are a pro man, starting from scratch. thumbup.gif

You have to buy very very very very very high quality chrome wrap to wrap a laptop as normal chrome sticker, they are hard and cannot bend or flex one. biggrin.gif
My customer R3 that I modded was pink, plastic dip biggrin.gif
*
yeah, i will be using automotive wrapping. those are confirmed high quality ones.

gonna order aw17 from dell, is it worth waiting for?
*
buy straight from bro putochip123. although he may offer you GTX7xxM, but take note that the GTX8xxM chips are still using Kepler architecture, which is a 20% performance boost (2-4FPS to be exact), which is not worth the price you paid for.

if you really wanna feel something, the safer bet is 980m and up.

one thing i worry is, nvidia will differ in 2 batches, 1st batch with Kepler, 2nd batch with Maxwell.
its just like how they did with the GT6xxM series.

as long as the socket type and power requirement are still compatible with the specs of mxm 3.0b, i think there should be no problem. (yeah i hope so too lol!)
*
must upgrade that power brick too if power consumption of the card is too high.

btw, welcome Hiero and his M18x R2 onboard the mothership. rclxms.gif

QUOTE(shockk @ Jul 15 2014, 12:41 AM)
Hey guys.

Sorry for this newbie question. How does the switchable graphics in Alienware laptops actually work?

For example, I seem to be able to switch between the integrated graphics and discrete graphics by pressing FN + F5 keys, and it requires a reboot to switch back and forth between the integrated and discrete graphics.

I was thinking, with Nvidia Optimus technology, shouldn't this be automatic? Like when I'm 3D gaming, my discrete graphics turns on and vice versa when I'm not gaming.

And the funny thing is, when I first got my AW17, the default was set to the integrated graphics! lol. I couldn't even run TitanFall at maximum settings properly then, and after I switched to discrete graphics (FN + F5 keys) and rebooted - then only everything became silky smooth.

Any thoughts? I tried to Google up some info about this but found none, hmmm.

Whoever can shed some light, I would be most grateful! notworthy.gif
*side note: for comparison sake, on my MacBook Preo Retina 15", under Mac OS X, the discrete GPU automatically kicks in whenever I'm doing anything graphic intensive, and it reverts back to the Integrated Graphics when I return to doing some light work.
*
if you added the games into the list of apps to enable GPU computing, it will run fluidly. basically the FN + F5 key, like others said is to turn on/off the nvidia optimus. the 2 combination keys are very good essential for AMD users, since Enduro (AMD's GPU switching technology) arent matured enough in the past.

rihuhs btw, added you to X51 owners list. Welcome onboard the mothership. thumbup.gif
