QUOTE(jamis @ Jun 21 2006, 05:19 PM) i m currently having my third year in Information and communication technology which majored in Networking. I would like to know, how far this degree can bring me, i m a little doubtful for my career in future. Any idea? Doesnt matter what major you took. IT grads have these to contemplate when they graduate:p/s : the networking degree i m undertaking is basically consist of e-commerce, and knowledge on hardware and software for networking. Are you good in: 1) Programmer 2) IT support 3) Sales and services 4) More than one of the above. If you are good in 1 and 2..then yr career is good. Start somewhere humble and work yr way up (chinapek one-leg kick company will let u grow faster). Knowing all 3 is even better....selling a business suite/solution that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions will get u good commission. If its none of the above..go sell VCD/DVDs |

QUOTE(swlong @ Jun 21 2006, 04:28 PM) Networking degree? I am curious about this too. Most traditional Uiversities/Colleges don't offer this because the 'Network' component is just a small area of specialty within the CS/IS realm. What's your curriculum like? Cisco is ruling the networking world nowadays Of course Cisco is.. but I wonder what makes up a Networking degree these days by some Universities or Colleges that proclaim to have this degree.Back in my days, there isn't such thing but pure Maths, Computer Science or Engineering degree with one subject in Computer Networks (that may span over 1 or 2 semesters). We have to write low level C code, build comm drivers to make a client/server process work over the network. This post has been edited by netfan: Jun 22 2006, 07:25 AM |

QUOTE(jamis @ Jun 22 2006, 02:35 AM) I am just curious to know what are the various 'Network'-related coursework they provide nowadays. Can you list some of your courses that make up this Bach.of Info&Comm Tech degree? u seems very interested to wat subject a networking degree consist of.
networking is not a small piece of cake ok? as a networking graduates, we hv strong knowledge in TCP/IP, routers, switches, firewall, server, voip gateway configuration, network design, security policy and so on. not really focus on programming bcoz we r more on hardware which require intensive hands on experinece. unlike programmer, we cant practice our skill in front of our own computer, we need to deal with those enterprise network equipment in order to gain experience! sometimes the job description might overlap with system engineer which is more focus on the system (client/server) configuration. but a pure network engineer must hv strong skill is routing and switching. |
