ps/2 is the interface of connecting kb to PC. Not all kb with ps/2 connectors are mechanical though. B4 the use of ps/2, din5 is used, and b4 that there are other type of connector used.
Generally, back then in 80/90's, most keyboard is mechanical. As PC become more and more affordable, they had to do cost cutting on keyboards too, resulted the birth of rubberdome.
Nope, mech kb not necessary only 4 types or typing feel. Mech kb can be using Cherry MX, ML, Alps, Buckling spring and bla bla bla, many more mechanism. Each having their own typing feel.
Modern mech kb you found in the market now is mostly using Cherry MX switches, which having 4 types of mainstream switches, namely blue, red, black and brown. Again, each is different from another. There are also cherry mx clear, green, grey, milk, and bla bla, many more, but they are less likely to be seen on mass market keyboard out there.
Changing of switches involving finding replacement switches, desoldering and resoldering. If you think it is easy/economical to do so, then the answer is yes, you can change them. If you think it is too much hassle, then you better sell existing board and buying a new one.
