Many food come pre-arranged, so there's really nothing much you can do without ruining it unless you're are the food stylist they engaged.

What you can do is identify what's on the plate, which is the hero, which is the supporting actor, and which are just by-standers.

It takes time to learn up composition, composition involves not just the horizontal angles but vertical angles. Some food look nicer when shoot from top, some better when go low. Some better close up, some better further away.
