Hi,

I'm curious about the salary range for Software Engineers in Malaysia. I'm a Software/Web Developer with 8 years of experience. I'm in KL on a work permit contract and I'll be negotiating my salary increment soon. I would like to know what kind of salary average others are getting so I can judge mine and discuss about increment.

I do not want to be disrespectful by going around the office staff asking them their salaries. So it would help me a lot if I can get what is generally accepted range in KL.

Thanks in advance.

I'm from Sri Lanka (nationality) but I was educated and worked in UK for the last 8 years.

I'm interested in Programmer role. Technology is in .NET but my skills cover most languages (PHP, Python, SQL, Android and iOS) which they utilize now and then.

At 4K post tax, you are doing well, considering some people are making less. Anything over 4K post tax, it is bonus. The average and median salary for Software Engineer in Malaysia is about RM 5,600 pre-tax.

Here are some of the salaries of IT/Software Engineers starting in the industry:

I just get an offer from Software company for software engineer post. They just willing to pay me RM2100, I am still considering...

If you get a rm2100 offer and you're a fresh grad, you should be thankful as it is above the average here in Malaysia for your current level.

I started with 1900 as a software engineer at cyberjaya, now already two years i work as a software engineer, only get 2k++ salary.

It depends on how good you are and the projects that you've worked on in the past in relation to your current job.

I'd say if you're a performer with 8 years experience you can easily get 10k.

If you're average, 6-8k.

People in this forum always assume things.

Well is NOT EQUAL to high. Nobody said his salary is high.

He said 4K post tax. We do not know what is his pre-tax salary. He could have basic deductions or he could have plenty of deductions and tax credits. In this case, his salary could be more than what we imagine. This is why he quote the post tax salary. He does not want you to know his true salary. In any case, with a 4K post tax salary, he is doing well than a lot of Malaysians citizens who makes less than 4K post tax.

4k post tax and you are talking about uncertainty of pre-tax. The highest taxation for malaysia earner is 26% which impose to salary bracket > 25k or expat. So i assume TS is expat now, pre-tax should be 4k/(1-0.26) = 5.4k for 8 years of experience in software development.

Assuming his first job started at 22y/o and he probably 30 y/o this year. Do you really think 5.4k justified. Perhaps we never look for higher and hence keep lying ourself we are getting better than the rest.

Let me tell you, people with <3 years can get much more than that. You may say i am talking cock, but the reality is out there.

Hi. You're spot on in your calculations. I'm getting 5.5k pre-tax and I am 30yrs old. rclxms.gif

I have been in the same industry of the company I'm working with. Infact, they used to be a client of my previous company and I was their go-to guy when they needed assistance. So they know my skills and talent quite well.

I have been reading of programmers who earn 4k and I also came across forum discussions (even in LowYat forums) where expat programmers making 10-15k. So I was confused on the salary bracket of someone with my experience. That's why I asked the question here to get a general idea so I can discuss with my company regarding my salary increment.

Thanks for all the info. thumbup.gif It seems I could be making more from what I can understand. If someone has suggestion on what scale I should aim for in my discussion, I would welcome it.

I'm a software developer, fresh graduate and my first job after grad is 3.5k(3k post tax) and I have been working close to 6 months since then.

Now my boss want me to shift to another UK based company while working part time for my current company, which puts around 5.25k(4.8k post tax).

I definitely think you are underpaid, 8 years experience is damn a lot especially if you got quite a lot of them in mobile development(higher demand).
