anybody knows how?
or is it cheaper here?
can't seem to find it in nz..
and i heard that it is classified as an exotic pet in australia..
weird..considering it originated from there.

so..what's the procedure?
i have to get it quarantined first or something right?

my room is so boring..i need a playful pet..
pssst..a cat is too big for my small room..i might get kicked out of my hostel if they found out abt the pet..

sugar glider doesnt make much noise right?
and for the food..
we always get fresh fruits with our meals..
well..of course..the calcium supplement will be thought of later..

what i really wana know now is...how do u take your pet abroad?

is it expensive? too much hassle?

well, I don't think the gliders can survive being shipped to NZ....

gliders may have originated in Australia and all but they are scarce. most gliders in the pet trade originated from Indonesia...

Hello!

In my opinion, just don t do that. Too much hassle and far too expensive. I know quite well the question of export and import. Scenario:

U buy ur pet here in Malaysia. he's probably born either here or in Indonesia, use to a certain temperature and climate.
`Before leaving for NZ, u must pass perhilitan check then jabatan haiwan for vet check.
Ask for import papers in NZ and provide the cert from perhilitan and haiwan.
Then u must do the export paper with the customs here.
Find an airline that accepts them; anyway without guarantie of it surviving the trip.
make a box/ cage suitable for the transport. pay an astromic amount for the transport.
comply with the quarantine period in NZ at ur charge as far as i know.
then provide the right temperature in ur room.
They are actually very noisy when they vocalize and they smell strong.

My idea, get a babi white rat (not mouse), train him, teach him how to behave and u r gonna have a wonderful pet that does not make noise, does not smell much, that is very playful and incredibly clever. And they are certainly easier to obtain than sugarG!

good luck!

If you have the oppportuinity, get a fancy rat, they are bigger than a mouse and glider but affectionat and fun to have.

If you are looking for something smaller, try a gerbil. They are really fun to have and suit hostel life well since they don't need much care, are active almost throughout the day and never smell like hamsters. Also tamer than hamsters....

rats don t stink more than a cat or a dog. mice do stink madly.
And rats are actually so much more clever than hamster and gerbils that i would not hesitate a second. Mine sleep on my laps, play hide and seek, and is affectionate to the extreme. he waits for me, answer to his name and never ever try to bite anybody. wonderful animals.

Taggy, i heard u learnt how to do snake charming. do you???

RAT ??? i'm from rat year BUT what if it attracts the neighbouring mice over? after all ... rats and mice pee every few seconds to mark their trail so they can return back home ...

Aiyoh, pet rats should live in cages.. so they won't pee and poo everywhere lah. But they are affectionate. Tame and it's like having a large glider around but they are just stinky. Hehehh... me also rat year lah. They won't attract the feral rats and mice.... Well, I had 30 mice before and there were no feral ones that came near them heheh... tongue.gif

Gerbils aren't stinky at all. Cheap too.... I think you can get it cheap in New Zealand... in other countries, common coloured gerbils are less than $15... depends on the country lah... here in Malaysia, they are not common.

I can't say gerbils are as smart as rats... they are nice to handle but can't learn tricks. Very lifely and they love to socialise. Best get a pair of the same sex so that there is no over breeding. If you want to lean more about gerbils, do click my signature on the gerbil forum.

If you want something affectionate I think you should get a rat. Although gerbils and mice and rabbits can be very affectionatte too but it doesnt always happen, depends on your luck. Rats make one of the best companions once they are tame n bonded to you.

So far i think the most suitable pet is gerbil, just like what crazymouse has mentioned. Hamsters will be smelly if you don't clean their cage often. SG needs a lot of space and attention thus it's not that suitable. Tarantula and scorpion are out of your list since you need something to play with.
