Failed Soundmagic PL-21 recable. Probably due to my noob soldering skills.

Left side no audio, might have fried the left driver sad.gif
Right side low volume, most probably didn't terminate it properly on the jack.

Used cat6 cable and jalan pasar so called "gold plated" 3.5mm jack.

My ADDIEM cable is really bothering me. Anyone able to help me recable it? Will pay for the service of course.
Fabricate a new cable for the IEM(hopefully doesn't cost an arm...) or I can provide my own for a transplant.

I would do it myself but buying the required tools($$$) for a one shot job put me off.
Unsteady hands aren't helping either.

I notice you have immaculate braiding. Any pointers for a beginner like me?

My quad litz braid some parts flat, some parts roundish. Overall uneven. Quite unsettling.

remember the braiding sequence, apply even pressure on each round, make sure each round has the same gap as others. wink.gif

Thanks for the tip notworthy.gif

I'm slowly getting used to the flat braid. Training on cat5 cables.

Just found out there is a round/chain braid. Will try that out.

Now... It seems that i cant find a tutorial on 6 or 8 braids.... Is it some sort of trade secret?

What is the reason/benefits of having 2-3 signal and 1 ground?

i did 8 braid before, you can do it in 2 ways, you can group them into 4 pairs then only braid or braid them individually. Its hard to find it because its quite troublesome to do it.

from my experience, if you put 1 left, 1 right 1 ground, the sound tend to be slightly slower, you see because each channel has its own signal cable but ground is being shared. for all my cable that i sold i usually do 1:2 ratio, unless cable mixing.

Yeap, I tested 8 braid using 4 crossed pairs first.

So far I prefer round braid over flat braid. It is easier to get consistent, looks better and more flexible too.

After half a dozen cat5 testing, now going to make one using canare star quad.

24awg ofc recabled. still polishing my skills. not sure what to do with making a reinforced y-split.
used 1/4" plug instead of 1/8" because I can't seem to fit the cables in the plug properly. also 1/8" plug too miniature for my shaky hands to solder...

Bought 20meter vztec branded cat5e cable today, wanting to make lots of el'cheapo cables(training and testing purposes). It said 24awg on it.
I'm not even expecting it to be OFC. Lousy but shiny copper strands will do.

Cable was extremely soft before stripping the cat5 tube. When I opened it up....... 26awg and it is not copper! Stranded steel!

Superlux 669 recabled with canare star quad 2M icon_rolleyes.gif

In the future might dampen the cups, bling up the headphones and probably do multifilament nylon sleeving if I have the extra budget flex.gif

Open both sides and look for the wire that has same color. Usually ground / - wire is same color.

Else just look for a red dot. Usually they drip 1 dot of red ink or something to indicate where is the +

And another example reference for you(although might not apply to all headphones)... so far I've recabled 2 headphones, Left is - and right is +

Or you just settle the plug, braid the cables, then strip the ends that you supposed to solder to the drivers.
Connect the cable to your mp3 player and play something, touch the stripped ends of your cable lightly on the drivers to experiment which is left channel, which is + or - etc.....

Added on June 19, 2012, 12:37 am1 more question..
izit possible to make a dual sided cable headphone to a single sided one?
*
Yes its possible either way (dual sided to single or single to dual). Just a matter of how your headphone design is like, and if its not possible, how you're going to work around it.

Just make sure both sides don't share a single ground cable.
