The submarine, named Kukoryu (Black Dragon) it is said to be state-of-the art and was built at a cost of 53.4 billion yen (US$540M) by Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

Adorned with several rising sun flags in both the regular national design and controversial war flag still used by the JMSDF, the Kukoryu sat on the slipway waiting to be launched.



Then workers knocked out several blocks holding it in place and the 84-meter-long submarine surprisingly quickly yet smoothly slid backwards into the ocean. The JMSDF’s sixth submarine will remain docked in that area while the finishing touches are done on its interior.





The name Kokuryu belongs to a mythical dragon that is said to protect the North in Japanese mythology as well as Chinese where its known as heilong. When all the work is completed, the submarine will be dispatched to either Yokosuka Base in Kanagawa Prefecture or Kure Base in Hiroshima Prefecture in March of next year.

they just launched their izumo-class helicopter destroyer last few months. and china went butthurt and make a hoohaa about it because it looks a lot like an aircraft carrier (which japan is forbidden to have according to the treaty)

The Japanese made the best military hardware yo. Zero - Best Fighter. Yamato-class - Best Battleship. Unfortunately they didn't focus too much on carrier-based strategy which is why they failed to to do more damage to the Americans. Plus, the American Carriers weren't in Pearl Harbor when they came knocking, which is another reason they lost

China is scared of the Japs. They know that if the Japanese weren't restrained by the US, they could easily beat anything that China could field (read: copy) and curb their bid for regional dominance. China wouldn't be able to expand militarily because they'd be too busy taking part in an arms race with Japan.

The Zero was good because the plane had no armour plating, unlike the American's Hellcat. No armour....light weight thus can fly faster
Even if they hit the American carriers, American industrial might could easily replace them within 2 years or so. Japan could not do that after their carriers were sunk at Midway

Few years ago toshiba heavy indrustry almost kena saction by US cause they sold a nice engine which chinese put in their sub. The engine virtually undetectable by US sonar...

this is their sixth soryu-class submarine. they currently have 16 in total. planning to increase the total number to 22 or 24 by building more soryus.
