Hi guys.

I love photography.
My parents agreed to let me join photography courses during the school break, or even take a year off before entering college.
Do you guys know any good courses where i can pick up some skills? Or should i just go travelling to places (probably local since i don't want to waste too much of my parents money) and learn myself?

I created a flickr account yesterday, and i wanted to show you guys some of my work. I know is just 2 pictures available but please do shoot your comments at me cause i really want to learn.

Oh and one more thing,
My gears:
Canon 60D with 18-135 kit lens

I have 2 lens in my mind now,
- Sigma 30mm f1.4 art
- Canon 50mm f1.8

The price difference is huge.
Should i go for the cheap one first, or get Sigma straight?

You have a good set of gears. If it's me, I would suggest you to make use of your Canon and the kit lens before going for expensive lenses.

Take more pictures and upload it to flickr and forums and ask around for critiques. Photography courses are good, it will help you to learn faster. Find someone to teach you too, your friends, pro photographers around.

If you don't want to spent too much money on it, you can self learn. Internet is filled with free tutorials in blogs and videos in youtube. It may take some time though.

Just spend more time on real situation shooting rather than spending time on the theory. You'll learn more that way.

Good luck! smile.gif

Thanks for your advice!

This camera had been with me for almost 2 years.
I wanted the prime lens cause its small and it is easier to take photograph on the street.
Everyone move away even before i raise my camera.
I should have just get the 18-55 kit lens during my purchase.

You like street photography eh? I know some folks do this even with 70-200, so the size of the lens ain't matter.
One of the technique is to use that zoom, you photograph the moments from a distance without the subject knows about your activity. People getting away from you because they thought they're distracting your line of view for your work. That's what they taught me anyway. But I think it makes sense.

I love street photography, I love capturing moments.
I didn't thought of that! So true.
I forgot to add, I wanted the prime lens is because I heard they are good and fast in low lights due to their wide aperture.
Not like my current lens, have to boost iso.

Edit:
I think i should just get the 50mm lens to fit my requirement. It's cheap though and i heard its fun to use!
But i scare it is too tight on a crop sensored.

haha found another street photog lover!
yes, DSLR is kinda hard for street shooting...I using Fujifilm X100, so is basically purist for street shooting
IIRC, the nifty 50mm is a bit slow as it does no using any USM focusing and very tight on street, a 28 or 35mm lens on APSC will do the job

but as other have said, there is no gear that define for which purpose, I use macro lens for portrait and even telephoto lens for landscape...

guess can have a shooting session together and pass you some street photog skills and experience, I normally scout around bukit bintang and petaling street area

some of my shots

With my NEX5N. I find 55-210 fit some occasion for street photo.. best when you are seated in a nice spot for a cuppa and taking sniper shots across the street.

50 is great and more for selected moments.. mine is a full manual prewar Zeiss Sonnar. Work flow will be different but it gives me the distance, and control DOF. I guess with a small camera body, people will let you off and not too concern.

16 or wider - more for very quick shootout to steal the moment .. normally while walking .. do not have time to frame... ie these shots are sensitive ones and are normally not approved by the subjects.. like busy market place.. usually shoot from hip and up very close.
