Can someone give a link or provide a guide about computer security? For instance, give a clear list of security issues and software types needed to deal with them. When I 1st started using the internet many years ago, all I was told was that I needed an Anti-Virus software. Nowadays, with the Internet turned into a battlefield, you need Anti-spyware, Anti-adware, firewalls, rootkit removers and various other forms of protection. All these security issues can drive a noob crazy.

Havoc Knightmare, to be very honest with you, if you really want "a" link, it is quite impossible. To get good results of defence, you might need to read from various sources. I'll try dig up my old chest of links... You can read from CNET forum regarding security. It does provide little hints here and there.

^ or you chould hang around here
on a more serious note, the basic steps are to get a firewall, antivirus and antispyware programs and keep away from *ahem* sites. most computer security people say that the only secure computer is one that is turn off, encased in a block of concrete and protected by armed guards and alot of general security guide are meant for those who aren't computer/technically-inclined. remember that as the experts try to make things more secure, hackers are also trying to beat those security measures.... eg. ehttp://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,122500,00.asp ....so a more tecky, comprehensive & exhaustive guide which you're looking for isn't readily available. |

Hmm...my advice for you:
Use Win XP with SP2 installed...[I never bothered to updates anyway..] Use Zone Alarm Pro[or the free version] Use AVG, or Kaspersky AV Use Spybot S&D, make sure you update it and immune your computer And always use FireFox or Opera to surf the net ...thats all.. DONT install weird software, such as Zango..etc... |

True, GameSky's advice is a good lead. You can also buffer up security by using Ad-aware and SpywareBlaster. For AV, do some reading up. I would highly suggest NOD32 and Kaspersky.

But if u have wireless connection, that's another measure to take... other than firewall(s), a hardware filter (e.g. router) may help.

Most important thing is to close the loopholes. Then watch what you do online. Then, you are like guranteed 50% safe.
