Basically there are two kinds of "modes". Trophy Farming and Resource Farming. People usually leave their TH unprotected when they are farming. One reason is because they don't care much about losing/gaining trophies, the other reason is because others who are Trophy Farming will go for the TH and then end the battle, leaving their resources alone therefore giving them a "Free" shield which is pretty important for Resource Farmers.
