I working as avionics design engineer for 4 years already. But more towards aircraft installation design and DCA liason on aircraft modification in general aviation industry and military. I would advice you finished you degree first, since DCA requirement dictate one to have at least a degree should you want to pursue your career as technical services engineer in airlines or design engineer in design engineering company. Im not sure in R&D, in general aviation we have some kind of approval from DCA to approved paperwork for aircraft modification/installation. Its very lucrative but not as good as oil and gas. Must agree that quiet difficult to jump field. Maybe the only choice for you to jump later on is to general aviation from R&D.
