QUOTE(robertchoo @ Mar 27 2014, 02:10 PM)
Well, I'm not saying they are not following procedure or policy. Its just that as a hiring manager when hiring an employee , if all else being equal, tend to favour someone with similar cultural background. Its human nature. Even if it was up to you when hiring an employee and assume you short listed final 2 candidate. If 2 of this candidate are the same or about the same in terms of experience, salary and attitude, I'm sure you will go for the one with similar cultural background as yourself, correct?
*
It very much depend on the person whether he/she want to be bias based on the similar background or not. By doing that, he/she act unprofessionally. A time bomb that one day may hit back at you. Will you put your job at risk just to bring in someone you think you can work better with from the 1-2 hours of communication? My answer - no.

I won't let myself be stuck at that scenario where all things equal and only the cultural background is different. Normally we have another round of interview for those kind of case, throw them few sets of papers and judge base on scores. If everything else fails, do coin flips, 2 out of 3. thumbup.gif

Well, I certainly don't want to bring in people who i think can't work with me from the 1-2 hours of communication, i can say as much as that. Point is, in the real world (unless you know the candidate personally) 1-2 hours of communication is all you got. Sure, you can do reference checks but that is also not 100% fool proof, is it?
At the end of the day, as a manager, I want people who can work with me. If he can't work with me, if he's always creating problems for me, why should I waste my precious time to manage him, right?
*
Our culture same same, race same same, 1 Malaysia some more, but think and work differently. So that answer your question of prefer hiring the same cultural background so can work easier together question or not?

Just renewed my passport at the UTC (Urban Transformation Center) in Ipoh. It's actually very fast. I was there at 8:30am yesterday (Sunday) when it opened, my number was the 9th, completed the submission and photo taking by 9am (no forms or photos needed, just bring old passport and mykad), went for breakfast nearby, and came back & collected my new passport at 10:15am.

Was actually quite impressed.

Doing it in SG would have taken 3 days, bringing your own photos, filling up forms and 2 personal trips to the consulate (deposit and pickup).
*
Think their target of renewing passport is one hour. Renew back home few times already, always around 1 hour plus kao tim. Good thing is they work on weekends, I don't believe it the first time when I heard this, MY government office working on Sunday blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

QUOTE(razo2 @ Apr 2 2014, 04:43 PM)
This is the internet. People do make jokes and the reaction could vary in the community.

In the end of the day it is up to you to react. I dont get pissed on the internet because I know it is just a waste of time to get angry about. If you do get pissed, go learn some zen.

I dont seek for drama and conflict as I already got enough of that in the real world. The internet is a freedom that people choose to live their life in a happier way.

People do take our jobs as well in my country. I dont get mad about it. It is part of globalization effect. Just learn to survive. No point b*tching about it that people take your job, instead do something about it to get the job.

South Park broadcast it on the network, they dont get into trouble for doing that. So what is it difference of me posting a meme here?
*
Try to avoid sensitive remarks on race, religion and politics, anything that can make the locals angry. People here can get charged and put into jail by making comment on internet. Be more careful when you are somebody, high pay, high rank etc. Don't let them start and meat search you, ancestors also dig out then post on stomp.

Just moved to Singapore for work last week.

Anyone know any good gyms near yishun/khatib/yio chu kang/ang mo kio area? Checked out fitness first AMK hub but it was super duper crowded. Checked out safra gym yishun but it's for PRs/citizens only unless I pay $15 per entry.
*
Those are residential areas, you go after work or weekends sure crowded. Try the gym around the city during weekends. My gym class quite empty, but its all ladies class though.

Hi, do people usually attach testimonials from their employer together with their PR applications? Not sure how much it'll help.. Feels a bit paiseh, especially if they ask you to draft one on your own  sweat.gif
*
The testimonials have little significant if the person signing on it is nobody. Any person can write something good about you. But better than none if there is no negative marking.

Wait only if you think you don't qualified based on your observations, assumptions, limited statistics, stories, rumours insider info etc. Nobody know for sure how they evaluate. Waiting for 2 more years to add advantage to your application also another question mark.

Safe to say both the average saving and average expenditure of some people here are more than your salary if you are the average employee. biggrin.gif They won't be here if they are average.

as a local singaporean, i don read the real singapore, its a well known gossip forum which sometimes fabricates "news" and fictional authors....

read it as entertainment news don take it too seriously.

Ah yes those are trolls stirring harmony between the locals and foreigners.

QUOTE(tom_kkh @ Apr 9 2014, 09:31 AM)
this is what i always tells my KL friends.

which one can u save more?

earning RM3k and spending RM$5-RM$7 for every meal or earning Sin$3000 and spending Sin$3-sin$4 on every meal?

Yes we still have Sin$3 even $2.50 food.

more eg. 2 meat 1 vege average is about SIn$3.30, if industrial area, u can even get it for $2.80.  in KL it would be easily RM$6?

So if you earn sin and spend sin vs earn RM and spend RM, logically, u should be able to save more due to "cheaper" meals.  not forgetting the exchange rates.
*
The problem is some of us don't get 3k rm job compared to the 3k sgd job offered in SG, maybe in KL or big cities. For people in kampung or tree area like me, max 1k rm job. cry.gif

Here you go:

Tariff Rates

> The electricity tariff for households is 25.73 cents per kWh (with effect from 1 Apr 14 to 30 Jun 14)

> The gas tariff for households is 21.01 cents per kWh (with effect from 1 Feb 14 to 30 Apr 14)

> The water tariff for households is $1.17 per cubic metre (below 40m3) and $1.40 per cubic metre (above
40m3)

Your average utilities:

http://www.singaporepower.com.sg/irj/servl...=Our%20Services

The average a bit on the high side for my category, only 60-70% of the average, maybe because only 2 people in the household. wub.gif

(the news is in mandarin...sry)

now i only know got this kind of 'law' , so how many kg can we actually take across the msia sg bridge?? how they weight the things??
*
Have, you need to read those sign board around custom. 5kg for each type of meat, beef, chicken, seafood, vege etc. No pork from Malaysia. I just smuggled in 10kg of frozen seafood and few kg of vege through air. No question asked. I have been doing this weekly for years, its hard running a family for aunties... Just bring in reasonable amount, don't fill those 30 plus inches luggage all with meat then you are ok.

Hi Fiona, want to get your advice how did you bring in frozen seafood thru flight, the travel time from let says home -> airport -> sg could take at least 2-3 hours. Aint they are going to defroze? Just wondering because I had thought of doin the same.
*
You need good insulation to maintain the temperature and make sure it doesn't leak. Take out all the organs, get the air out, sealed the plastic bag and freeze the fish without any water, some ice will form though, few layers of plastic wrap, put the whole thing in sealed insulated bags - these bags do most of the job keeping the temp and prevent leakage, 2-3 big plastic bag over, put in card board box, newspapers to fill the void. The box should not feel cold, if its feel cold the ice will melt. My home-SG-SG house take about 5-6 hours, no problem so far still ice cold when unpack.

You can try styrofoam box to test your custom, I saw shops at seafood shop in the my airport putting them in styrofoam box, can pass inspection.

Hi all, just want to share my experience on PR application. I was required by a malay lady officer to translate my birth certificate and she got very angry when I mentioned that I thought its not required. My application was on hold until I submit my translated birth certificate as she treat it as incomplete application.
*
You can complain to ICA if that procedure is not required but the officer insist because of some unofficial reason. Your quote of people don't require translation from this thread is not valid. You need to find from the official procedure. Officer is not the king, they can't act based on their own discretion. They can't scold you or raise their voice. They are doing services.

I done mine long ago with the yellowish type writer font birth cert. No translation is required. I think it was even a photocopy one. The officer was nice.

Go and read up all the related act, say is malay an official language, can malay be used in official purposes, if you very angry, can't sleep and want justice to be done.

You just quote one small part that is summarised from part of the clauses from the acts. If you read properly what I said, there are still many many clauses gazetted that me and you don't even know. Many of the people here did not have their documents translated but still success in the application, some are required or their application put on hold. There is a discrepancy here. Either one of the officers are not following the rules.

Dont the food get spoiled from all those throwing at the customs?

Hand carry.

QUOTE(razo2 @ Apr 16 2014, 09:39 AM)
Different people act differently. Sometimes when the officer got a bad day also can cause problems in the application. In the end of the day is your luck and ability to talk to people. If immigration is hard to handle, try shipyard. They are 10 times harder. But sometimes it is good to approach people in a warm manner, make some jokes to brighten up their day.
*
Private no people care you. Government they need to follow the book, no accept if good mood reject if don't like your face. Don't follow the procedure then we do our NS by complaining.
