Hey people, this might sound very silly but here goes! I bought a few things in Malaysia (clothes and toiletries) and will be bringing it to Singapore. Will I be taxed for GST? I have since removed the price tag and packaging if it makes any difference.

Things were fine at the immigration when I set foot into SG last week with my massive luggage. However, I wasn't aware that goods bought for own consumption is subjected to GST!

What do you guys think? Am I being overly cautious here? What is a "good"? Items to be brought into SG with their original packaging and price tag in tact? If the law is to be accounted for, wouldn't that mean personal belongings are taxable too since they were all bought at some point in time?  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif

Take a look here for the real stuff.

http://www.customs.gov.sg/leftNav/trav/Dut...+GST+Relief.htm

You can enjoy GST relief up to the following values of goods, excluding cigarettes, tobacco, liquors and petroleum products.

Period away from Singapore

Value of Goods

48 hours or more

S$600

Less than 48 hours

S$150

Such goods include new articles, souvenirs, gifts and food preparation which are for your personal use and not meant for sale.

Holders of a work permit, employment pass, student pass, dependent pass or long-term pass issued by the Singapore Government and crew members are NOT eligible for GST relief.

Removing price tag and box add one more charge "IF" they want to charge you - avoiding GST with intention and planning.

Following my post yesterday, I have gotten a job offer in Woodlands biggrin.gif

However, another thing starts bugging me now.. Is it probable that my application for a working permit, be it S-pass or E-pass gets rejected by the MOM?

I heard from some that compared to other countries, Malaysians will still likely to succeed in the application. Is it true??

Most companies like overseas graduate. But it all depends and what you can offer in skills, character and communication.

I think they are pretty strict about S and E pass now.
Government suppose to limit the amount of fresh graduate coming in to SG to protect their own local graduates.

Ya, quite worried too because I hear it isn't easy for my SG friends to get work.

At least SG folks understand Malaysians... not like in some places, they think we are all like some Chinamen with bad English, zero ability to communicate etc.

Even with right skills/qualifications and equal/better English compared to a Singaporean it's gonna be tough - but hopefully possible.

Would be interested in hearing any recent stories, because these things (sentiments and perceptions) can change in the blink of an eye.

I was in your shoes 2 1/2 years ago. Some facts about myself:
1) MY citizen
2) AU fresh graduate, not from a Go8
3) Not SG PR
4) Invited to undertake the honours year program
5) Applied to SG positions with MY phone number & address (run of the mill resume - nothing outstanding) - received few calls, 2 interviews
6) Sought help from some people here (but was rightfully ignored because I wasn't doing enough for myself) and attempted multiple routes e.g. tourist visa + local newspaper, job boards etc.

Not a lot of developments until I refined my resume (this includes understanding the mechanics of the headhunting process e.g. what drives a headhunter/hiring manager/HR, what turns him/her off, what sort of dialing tone he/she receives if I'm overseas/or in SG etc) & repackaged myself (and applied for very niche roles) - I accentuated the fact that I had some personal but substantial money-making stuff (that was directly relevant to the jobs I was applying for) going on during my university years, my nationality and the languages I speak. The latter strategy is a particularly important one because SG is a regional hub for many companies. Like many of our compatriots, I used to think that the Malay language was an absolutely useless language with no economic value but I came to realise that in this rapidly growing part of the world, the Malay Archipelago, half of us (that's roughly 300m people) speak Malay, be it Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia or others. Others are picking up Mandarin because it's the Chinese century but I figured if I were to follow the herd, I'd be extremely below average especially in a country where cabbies hold Stanford degrees etc.

I struck gold with these two changes and landed quite a few interviews. The rest as they say is history.

I applied two very useful mantras to my job search process:
1) Forget about what the doom mongers say. Sure the SG gov tightened some laws, but chances are the statistics these doom mongers peddle are irrelevant because of their macro nature. You'll still be able to find a couple of rapidly growing segments within mature industries. Or sunrise industries.
2) Simple but effective advice - get a game plan and differentiate yourself.

Good luck!

Very encouraging story, thank you!

How do you really break in, now that most applications are online? Directly apply on websites, or do you call in to specific HR depts within the companies you're interested in.

I think I have some qualities (languages, academics, several internships) but as the very niche area I'm trying to get into is quite saturated, they don't advertise for graduates and at some point (maybe after graduating) I might try cold calling. I'm open to broader sector-wide opportunities but again they don't advertise.

Still, I am starting with the email and resume send outs, they mostly never worked for internships but hopefully will for this.
