You are very keen to invest. Give some considerations to a foreign market,...choose one that is closest to us for now,...

Start to convert some MYRs into the SGD, and invest small first,...think about it,...

Guys,... I owuld advise 'rollover' to just stick with the EPF and to play safe,... Reading his few comments -

HE HAS NO EXPERIENCE IN INVESTING, HE DOES NOT EVEN TRUST THE VERY EASY METHOD OF PROPERTY INVESTMENT IN MSIA !

With his current age, it's better that he remains satisfied with what he has, and continue to enjoy the consistent income from putting money in the EPF.

Starting to learn at his age, and starting to take investment risks now is very risky.

Sometimes. peer pressure is the culprit - our colleagues and people out there who 'push' us to spend. It's not that we don't wish to save,... but those characters out there exerting the pressure onto us.

When we work, this is the hard part,... we are earning an income, but there are also people with whom we work with who push us to spend, otherwise, we can't get along well with others at the workplace !

Just a share on EPF and how much a "typical" employee may accumulate.
Assumptions used:
Starts working: 23
Retires: 60
Starting Gross Salary: $2,500 pm

Increment pa: 5%
Increment month: Jan
Bonus pa: 2 months' gross salary
Bonus month: Dec

End result: $2M+

Imagine if spouse +self, if managed properly...
Goal of this share:
a. Even if so-so earnings, not bad leh IF manage expenses well
b. Tool for own projections / visualization

Just a thought - no absolute right/wrong.
Note - U can copy/download the google sheet and play with the variables in YELLOW CELLS to project / visualize your own data at your own privacy.

AssUme-d ma, for projections.

usual folks jump here there, get more than 5% pay increase pa.
usual folks that stays around get 3% to 10%+ (no new post vs new post)
thus, since it's a projection, take near inflation rate lor

IF my gross salary's long term increment < general inflation (don't lar pick atas punye inflation) for several years, i'd look for better offerings right?
OR do i just sit there and accept "fate"?

Also, one can take the spreadsheet and monkey around with the variables to fit one's specific situation to "see see", right?
*
OK,... tq bro,... hmm,... what I keep hearing nowadays is hard to find jobs, hard to land good jobs,...... everything just gives me the idea of thinking that being able to get a consistent 5% increment job out there is next to impossible,....

ya - nowadays...
nowadays = past 2-3 years?
vs
30+ years of slogging/work ma - thus, averaging out, still pessimistically optimistic lor that 5%pa increment.

again, it's just an assumption by me, pessimistically optimistic
if one is dreaming (heheh jibe at dreamer) pessimistically only, then can adjust the % and see the downside smile.gif
OR do like what dreamer did, went to where it pays more and not wait for fate  notworthy.gif
*
I'm not too concerned abt the past,... we have made our money,... but I believe this time, the past is really not indicative of the future anymore,... It will be more difficult for our younger generations,....

If we look back,... yeah,.. that 5% could be achieveable with adjustments here and there,... but looking fwd ?? I am not confident,... If you ask me whether I would like to start my life again, and start earning money again,.. I will not agree to it,....

I think we must help them a bit, the yourger ones today,... start them off with stronger footing, eductaion, some $$$ in the coffers, international exposure,.... don't know-lar,.. all these are just theories, I have just moved my children out of this ctry only,... still don't know how they will fare later,....

I saw many of my friends' children after graduating,... still returned to this 'bad' place and joined the family business, worked in Maybank selling Credit Cards and Housing Loans, some jobless sitting at home,... really don't know-lar,...

I wished to hand down my investment-knowledge and my 'platforms' around the world to my children and they said it's a lot of headache,.... what ?????

Of course la. As I said long time ago, never hand them ready money as they will never appreciate it. Hand them ready money,  be prepared to watch them spend it all away. Why?  They never learn the value of money.

Make them work for it. Then only they will appreciate it and want it.  If they never tasted hard life,  they will think ah, for what want to learn so much/manage this and that when I have ready money waiting for me. Make them work for it and you will see the difference.

That's normal human nature. That's why there is a Chinese saying, money never last more than 3 generations.

Just a point here : a Credit Card with a large spending limit can also act as an emergency fund source.

Hi all,

I'd like to seek advise from you guys. To. See if I miss any major areas in planning for my finances.

I'm 32, married with a kid.

My monthly pay is 10.6k

My expenses are :

1. House 2.5k
2. Car 1: 1.3k wife use
3. Car 2 : 400 own use
4. Insurance 1k for the 3 of us
5. Household : 500
6. Utilities : 100 +20
7. TM: 147
8. Digi : 53
9. House 2: 800 ( will dispose by year end)
10. Epf 1166
11. Pcb : 1.3k
12. Kid daycare 350
13. Petrol : 350

Wife earning 2k per month but I am letting her use it for her own

By year end, I am expected to receive 100k from the sale of the house, and by March next year expected 30k bonus.

My question is that, what is the better use for the 100k?

1. Use the 100k to pay off all the car loan?
This will free up around 2.5k of monthly cash flow
1.3k +400+800 (disposal of House)

2. Keep the 100k, put in ASB, earn 6k per year

3. Sell off expensive car, get a cheaper one. But have to bear the loss of selling while under loan. Currently hrv, planning either city or myvi or persona

I'm not a very good investor, very bad at it.

Any advise?

Let me give a highly alternative option : consider learning to invest your money overseas.

For example, into SG REITs and into HK Equities. ...

Sure,... look at these threads :-

1) SG REITs.
2) SGX Counters.

Look at the reasons for this initiative, and if the reasons suit your investment objectives and risk appetite, read further from there. Branch to other related threads or ask questions inside the respective threads.

We have to help ourselves.

Hi All. I have been following this thread for sometime now.
Would appreciate greatly if I can get some advise on achieving my financial goals (get a car, married and own house to stay).

28 years old
Nett Pay: RM6,400
Other Income from Rental: RM 1,500
(Own 2 properties - low cost flat renting for RM 500, condo renting for RM 1,000)

Monthly Expense -
Property Loan: RM 3,500
Parents: RM 500
Food: RM 850
Petrol: RM 150
Insurance: RM 500
Misc. (Travelling, Yumcha/Alcohol etc.): RM 1,000

Savings: RM1,400 a month roughly

Investment Portfolio: 20k in stocks, 20k Cash as backup, Fully paid off low cost flat worth 120k, EPF 100k

A brief summary of myself. Working in MNCs for the past 6 years and still living with parents.
I am currently in a relationship which explains why there is some travelling and higher than usual food cost.
Owned an old car for more than 10 years fully paid for, breakdown occasionally and planning to get a new car soon.

Had ventured into multiple "investments" that you can think of: stocks, FX trading, FD, MLM, properties, unit trusts and even some gambling activities, as I was willing to take huge risks since I was young at that time.
Only get burnt from these so called "investments" and the only 1 out of those that help generate some money is properties due to rental collection and even then I regret in purchasing a condo that is really far away and only get little rental yield from that.
Still losing money from stocks but planning to diversify my portfolio.

Planning to get married soon and I am worried that I will fall further into debt after getting a new car. Might even delay few years in getting a new place to stay even.
Having high salary increment/promotion could be difficult, as my company struggling in this current economic climate. Might even considered to move on to increase my pay.

Would really appreciate your thoughts/advise on how I can improve my own financial management.

Thank you.

You are young,... try to do a business, don't dive into investments yet. Make more to be used as bullets for future. After building your warchest, then you learn investments.

My background was like yours.

I think safe investment like ASNB can work with dividends of 5% every year.
*
You are welcome, young bro,... smile.gif

Emm,... some businesses needed cashfow to start and to develop, if the young man gets involved in such a business for which he feels he is capable of doing, then it would be best put to use in the business to earn more money. LIke leveraging,....

Earning 5% per year shld be the last way for him to earn money with,... at his age. JMHO,.... I did not play safe when I was younger,...but that's my way though,..

Okay,... it doesn't chg the fact that one needs money or warchest to invest.

Going through this thread, I can't help but feel there are so many ppl humblebragging here. Those earning >10k have no business sharing or pretend to ask for advice here, you are only bragging and trolling trying to make ppl here feel bad.

Earning > 10k, you are totally not in a pinch needing help managing money, you only need to not fuck up your business and income source, and don't waste money on lambo or mont kiara condo.

Sometimes certain people just need their actions and tactics to cfm-lar, bro,... Take myself, for instance,.. I talked a lot abt this many years ago and subsequently, I have built-up the confidence to know how to move abt it. Got money or no money or lots of money or little money is not really the point,...

After gaining the confidence,... I am today helping co-investors to invest too without charging mgmt fees, etc,... so, I benefitted from this forum,....forum (people) helped me and I help others,...
