Dear all Master, i'm kinda Noob here..

recently i got OLD Guitar from my parents, it's an OLD Ibanez RT240

Spec HERE

user posted image

Look like pict above..

but condition is worse such as :

1. Small Crack on the body near the neck joint
Attached Image

[attachmentid=3682710]
2. Polish that not shiny again and even crack
Attached Image

Attached Image
3. some screw are loosen and lost (not really important but for me it is quite annoying_
4. i ever bring to John Lau Guitar shop to diagnose they said pickup problem/wiring problem
5. Recently when play i feel the volume is not constant sometime i lost the signal and not enough power (maybe the wiring inside got problem)
6. fret need to replace

but i try to take care this guitar as my baby. even i know it got a limit.

ok, forget about the body condition what im really care is find a good Tone. So recently i brought this guitar to some (Mid class) Luthier in Indonesia, my friends introduce me to him. i run a full diagnose and the result is:

1. Re-Fret is necessary! (Refret Checked!)
2. Pot got problem when full volume, will get hiss noise. (Change pot and switch Checked!)

so everything is should be alright for now, guitar is setup well, all good.

the only question now is, is it normal that bridge pickup (HB) produce only about 40% gain than neck/mid pickup (Single coil)??

anyway my genre of music is rock, funk, pop, gospel.

if you guys have a question just ask me, but dont ask "How Much?" it's not for sale.. tongue.gif

if you're short on cash, then buy a new one for your gig... then take your time to restore this classic.
*
That option also counted in my mind.. blush.gif but it will take a long long time to restore the classic, it may fully broken before i can restore.. laugh.gif

put it somewhere safe. collect money to restore it! it may be the best guitar that u've ever played once restored! and maybe when u looks back at this moment in 20 years time, u'll feel glad that you've made the decision
..or if after restoring, it sound like shit, dump it
*
Bold parts it's a laugh.gif so it still have bad possibilities, and seriously that was my concern, i doubt if restoring can make the guitar sounds good.

Some say old is gold.

This may be true e.g. 59 Les Pauls.

But not if it's Kapok guitar from 1920.

No value apart from sentimental possibly.
*
haha no Kapok la, but not Les Paul Also, it's Ibanez MIJ but not in good condition, or i can say Bad condition, even i still play with it until now. cause no choice sweat.gif

i generally would strongly advise you against bringing it there even if  they were behind your place.

on the note, if you were a super star, like vai, that crack and shit will make the guitar cost like RM20k  tongue.gif
*
will try to arrange and communicate with them.. Lol, im not that star, someday maybe.. brows.gif

Does it really need a pickup upgrade? What is it about the current pickups that you're not satisfied with?

I reckon you should get that shim and crack at the neck joint looked at, clean up the guitar, restring it and set it up. And that's it. (Can't see the condition of the frets, so can't say whether it needs a refret.)

That is one sweet guitar!
*
i just not satisfied with pickup (not really rosak i mean, maybe my ear need to repair laugh.gif )

The humbucker will be louder than single coils, so it should be louder/gainier. All HSS guitars have this quirk.
*
even in bridge position?? then what thing that can make our guitar pickup become low output?? can repair or need to change?? any suggestion??

I think I misunderstood you.. your humbucker should not have lower output. Something is probably wrong with the electronics/wiring.

(No need to adjust the pickups height, wont help in this case.)
*
upps ok ok, im about to adjust my pickup, lucky i check LYN first.. haha.. so any suggestion regarding the replacement pickup??

You said a guy checked the guitar, he didnt mention the pickup problem?

Thing is, it might just because wiring problem that can be fixed cheaply, whereas replacing pups are costly, unless thats what you want...
*
yeah i told them to check all the wiring and pickup also but they said only pot problem, so they changed the pot n switch n output jack.. actually before they change the pot i already feel that my humbucker is producing low gain, but i think it's normal since the positions is BRIDGE pickup.

QUOTE(regiuseven @ Feb 13 2014, 08:04 AM)
I have a plan in mind about how to restore it. Just want to ask, you want it as it was before or with some modern tweaks ?

Add:
What I would do if I'm restoring this one

>disassembly, that includes the neck and all the hardwares
>pre-clean up
>fretboard treatment, check the nut and refret as necessary
>strip the body down to bare wood, treat/repair where needed
>check cavities, shielding/coating
>refinish - either oil it (will look badass) or anything you like
>check the crack, repair if necessary (dunno how lol)
>check neck joint area (body & neck), screw threads etc
>replace the electronics, pickups, jacks, pickguard, knobs
>check hardwares - machine heads/trem etc
>assemble & setup
>PLUG & PLAY
*
Actually i want to keep the look as vintage guitar.. here some list i did before:

>disassembly, that includes the neck and all the hardwares (Checked)
>pre-clean up (Checked)
>fretboard treatment (Clean n moist Checked), check the nut and refret as necessary (Done)
>check cavities, shielding/coating (No Cooper shielding at the moment only coating)
>check the crack, repair if necessary (crack not a big problem at this moment)
>check neck joint area (body & neck), screw threads etc (Checked)
>replace the electronics, pickups, jacks, pickguard, knobs (Pot, 5way switch and jack are replaced)
>check hardwares - machine heads/trem etc (machine heads smooth, checked. tremolo arm missing sad.gif since it's old model, dun know which arm compatible)
>assemble & setup (setup, checked. radius, fret level, intonation, action, all checked)
>PLUG & PLAY (of course i did play.. lol, but mainly i use Neck n Mid pickup for now, cause if i use bridge pickup, i need to re-adjust the volume on my pedal board or even need to add a clean booster)

anyway if i have to strip the body and re finish, i don't think i can do by myself since it's nitro finish, i need some chemical to strip the body to bare wood.. but if i can do this into bare wood i sure can't refinish it back as good as this one.. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

did the lanciao tech u sent to check pickup resistance and compare to the original specs see if its still the same?
*
hm in this case they don't tell me if the pickup still same or not with the original spec, but i know that they don't cheat me by changing the pickup behind me, cause i got a "special mark" on my pickup from first time i get this guitar. nod.gif

i'm pretty sure its not hard to find the specs.
can still find gibson specs that are 50yrs old.
and well if you're gonna get original specs of something, i would think the best place to ask are the original manufacturers?
if not also, there is jemsite.com where u can ask.
*
will try.. anyway it's ibanez.. lol.. i remember one of guitar master here said "anything except ibanez"

^ LOL

as for refinishing, stripping/sanding down definitely takes time but doing it yourself would be worth it

where to find that chemical?? mind to share??

Try ACE Hardware, maybe they have the chems for stripping down the original finish
Tung oil for refinishing also might be available as well

and that master is of course our great bro Everdying  laugh.gif
*
ok.. will try to find out that matter..

lol laugh.gif ..

but anyway guys, i found something on my wiring..
My pickup is LP style pickup and not the original IBZ V6F as i though, it's maybe changed before i receive this guitar but none tell me before until today i found it..

LP style pickup are design in single conductor which mean only 2 wire one is ground one is output.

Ibanez adopt an Fender style pickup which mean it should have 3 wire up to newest 4 conductors pickup..

Attached Image
here is OLD n NEW 5way switch

Attached Image
something missing here

normally will look like the pict below
Attached Image

GOOD news is my pickup having possibilities to modded to 4 conductors pickup. flex.gif

BAD news is i'm not brave enough to do that. cry.gif

THE option is:
A. mod it whatever the risk is.
B. bring to some electro guy and ask him for help under my supervision.
C. Buy New compatible pickup and install it.
D. Don't do anything, die that pickup la.

which one u choose, master??

FUYOOOHHH..

im back. so i choose the option A..

i do mod whatever the risk.. success!! (at least not rosak) but the gain still 20% lower than Single Coil pickup..

so i just did the adjustment to leveling the gain.

rclxms.gif
in other hand, i still not satisfy with the humbucker, will find the replacement soon. sweat.gif

is it me or does the neck joint look like there's something in between the neck and the body??? that's really really worrying.

1. just do a revamp of the electronics, don't bother with swapping out parts one by one, do it all.  Can't go wrong.

2. I doubt the issue is the pups... like seriously .

3. THAT NECKJOINT
*
Sorry, the pict is old one hehe neck joint last time had problem cause it's bending, rather than reset the neck, the lousy luthier just put some push-up.. last time i re-fret, the neck also got pressed and reset, so now it's not like that again lol..
