Gameplay Features

The Sandbox
Galactic Civilizations III is an open-ended 4X space strategy game that features a robust sandbox mode. The player selects who they want to play as, who they want to play against, the size and configuration of their galaxy, what conditions constitute a victory, and are then set loose along with their clever AI foes on an unsuspecting galaxy.

The Campaign
Galactic Civilizations III will come with a story-driven campaign that introduces players to the game’s setting. In the first campaign for Galactic Civilizations III, the player commands a powerful Terran armada that has just returned from a pocket universe to discover that the Drengin Empire is now firmly in control of the galaxy. It is up to the player to liberate the galaxy from Drengin oppression.

Multiplayer
For the first time, players can compete against each other in person and over the Internet in Galactic Civilizations III.

Exploring A Galaxy
Players typically start with a single colony, a colony ship, and a survey ship. They must explore the galaxy to find inhabitable planets. What planets are habitable depends on what species the player has chosen to play as.

Researching Technology
Each race has their own technology tree that provides unique ship equipment, planetary improvements, weapons, defenses, terraforming, sensors, and more.

Diplomacy
Players can negotiate treaties, trade goods and technology, and scheme against common enemies. Diplomacy has always been a key part of the Galactic Civilizations series and Galactic Civilizations III aims to take this much further.

Colony Management
Players build colonies on alien worlds in an effort to develop their economic and strategic potential. We have plans to add another layer of strategy to this aspect of the game.

Galactic Resources
New to Galactic Civilizations III are galactic resources. We’re very excited about the way these encourage players to push out onto the map. Stay tuned for more details on resources in the upcoming months.

Much much more!

This is just a tiny list of what’s in Galactic Civilizations III. Stay tuned for more revelations over the coming months!

Heard a lot of good things about this series too. Great AI that isnt retarded with a very robust ship design system.

This game is for 64 bit systems only. This will allow the game to utilize all 64 bits. so better upgrade your Operating System before playing this beast.

The only problem with GC2 is that the campaign is utterly mediocre.

But since sandbox is like 90% of the game it doesn't really affect much.

Galactic Civilizations 3 can support 100-faction games

QUOTE
Whoah. Now that's some real star wars. Stardock's space 4X Galactic Civilizations 3 can support up to 100 factions in a single match, and designer Derek Paxton has shown off exactly how that works in a forum thread over on the game's official website.

"Dropping 32bit support was a huge change for Galactic Civilizations," explains Paxton. "On the one hand we know that it means that there is a percentage of potential customers that won't be able to play the game. On the other, we are able to do things we could never do before, such as play a game with 100 players, which is exactly what I did this week."

it is nice if the game has "Realm Divide" just like in Shogun Total War 2.....when a faction got to powerful, several AI factions form a power bloc and declare war on your faction.....it will be a galactic war.

First Galactic Civilizations 3 expansion releases in February

QUOTE
The first expansion for Galactic Civilizations 3, called 'Mercenaries,' will be out on February 18. Stardock tells us that it includes a new campaign, two new factions, new ship parts, and over 70 new ships mixed in with some graphical improvements and new music.

As you probably guessed, Mercenaries also includes mercenaries. These new units will be hireable from the Galactic Bazaar, and aren't just for blowing stuff up, though I figure some of them will be good at that. Some will provide science boosts, for instance, so they become little bonuses you can maneuver to wherever you need help. Only a few mercenaries will be available in any given game, so it'll take some time to see them all. Additionally, if other civilizations hire away a mercenary, it's no longer available—though you may be able to infer some details about their strategy based on who they're putting on their payroll.

Details on the new campaign are sparse, except to say that you'll "lead the Torians to freedom from their Drengin oppressors." The aquatic Torians are one of the new races, joined by the Arceans, a warrior race.

The expansion will cost $20. Coming with it, though, is the 1.6 update, which will be free to everyone and adds "more detailed match results" and a new game launcher. Stardock dropped off a trailer for Mercenaries, too, which is embedded below.
