About a month ago I fell ill and after it was all said and done I ended up losing about 5kg in weight. I'm back up to my normal weight now after being able to drink and eat again.

Strangely my upper body maintained most of its mass, however my legs shrunk down. Even my feet feel like they lost some mass.

Did a bit of googling and it seems this has happened to other folks as well, however I didn't find any answers or theories as to why this would happen.

any clues?

this is chicken feet symptom, eat 2 drumsticks & jog 3km daily to be back to normal.

How does this even make sense?

OP, losing some muscle mass is to be expected if you were sick and took a month off. It is strange that you say your feet are smaller, though.

I expected some loss of mass just not for it to be mostly lower half. My feet are the thing that confuses me the most, although they do seem to be coming back up to what I remember to be normal size

Friends don't leg friends skip leg day. Plus even if that was the case, wouldn't it still be weird that I would lose fat only in my lower half but maintain it up top.

Anyway, no harm, no foul. I feel like I'm 95% back to where I was pre-illness.

OP: You just answered your own question.

When I get ill, my arms and pecs will lose mass first. What we've deduced is that you have a proclivity to lose leg mass. Mystery solved.
