How can I collect modular buildings & not get the market street?
Can what...just dont buy it .... tongue.gif

Thats why I said...TECHNICALLY...its fell under different theme. I have the old #5525 LEGO Factory Amusement Park last time...but already convert it into parts.
But..dont get me wrong, Market Street is a modular buildings...But, Factory really put me off... tongue.gif
I think I saw one of the seller in HK also mention technically it fell under different theme...(although that Market Street picture inside other modular sets)

Its like people saying 41999 is the same like 9398... sleep.gif
*
Don't deny yourself the privilege of owning it la... As you rightly put it appeared in the box art next to its siblings so it is definitely not complete without it... laugh.gif

Eventually they all become parts especially if our kids get their hands on them, my Fire Brigade's fire truck already in pieces. My daughter MOC her own fire truck!! rclxub.gif

Such a wealth of knowledge here !  rclxms.gif

A big thank you to all that shared their stories on technics (paanjang, jason, faish888, cute boboi, zemperor and many more).
After reading all your recommendations, it did take me a while (whole weekend and more) to research and look up those model number  rclxub.gif  that were mentioned.

all EOL sets... better stay away, don't even dare to look.
9398 - since it does not zip around..... a bit bleh....
8110 does looks like first option, but price  sweat.gif ??
42000 - again may not zip around for what it represents... maybe the engineering will be interesting.
42008 or 42009 hmmmm.... maybe start with the cheaper one  thumbup.gif

Thank you all again.
*
You're most welcomed bro. More than happy to spread some "love" (aka poison!) laugh.gif

8110 is not that expensive, can probably get it cheaper than 42009 if you hunt around... It is quite an interesting set even without the Mercedes Benz link/endorsement...

There lies the problem... doh.gif No friends in USA, well not super close friends or relatives that I can count on anyway... And even for close friends and relatives, it may ruin the relationship if the Lego orders are going to be on a regular basis. Cost me around RM1300 for my 41999 after taxes, shipping and "goodwill fees" to that guy... icon_question.gif

yea, though the box art colour a bit let down and many are staying away from the theme.

Personally I find LOTR theme more fitting as a medieval theme for AFOL than the current Castle theme, it is "darker" and more detailed if you get what I mean. The present Castle theme is great for kids but for AFOL it just don't have that oomph...

Don't get me wrong, it's nice and I did contemplate getting it (the dragons are cool) but I find LOTR more to my cup of tea...

lol! Yeah the colour of the current castle theme puts me off but I suppose that appeals to kids rather than adults... laugh.gif

If I were 30 years younger I would appreciate the simplicity of the castle theme: good guys vs bad. Clearly identified by the colours of their torso, flags etc. That's how I used to like it. As an adult I love the mix and variety of characters/minifigs in LOTR theme. icon_rolleyes.gif

Buy any of the following Lego Friends set and you should have everything you need except the hot dog/sausage... Only caveat is the colour may not be to your liking...

3061 City Park Cafe
3184 Adventure Camper
3315 Olivia’s House
41006 Downtown Bakery

QUOTE(aaz2082 @ Oct 17 2013, 09:13 AM)
Hi all,

Would like to ask for opinions. Is it OK to buy used, complete sets from either local or overseas sellers? This is in relation to EOL sets.

MISB prices are so high for these EOL sets, and recently I came across some good bargains on EOL sets which are used, complete sets which are on my wanted lists. Any tips to share on what to look out? Many thanks.
*
I'm figuring you are going after some EOL Modular Buildings? brows.gif

It's not difficult to find EOL sets that were built once for display and then put back into the box after a period of time spent on display so they will be as good as new with perhaps some scratches and colour fades (if exposed regularly to UV). Like many who suggested, it is the reputation of the seller that is important. If sourcing from BrickLink, check the seller's splash page, he/she may describe the condition or grading of used sets. And of course stay away from sellers who has low feedback...

I would also suggest that once you narrow down to a potential seller, try asking for actual photos of the set together with the instruction manual(s) and box if that's important to you as well.

Finally, beware of "BrickLinked" sets: These are not actual original box sets but are sourced from loose parts. Nothing wrong with that and I build my Cafe Corner and Market Street that way too but sometimes certain hard to find parts could be substituted (and unscrupulous seller may not declare that), and because the parts are sourced from different places sometimes the colours may differ a little... Good sellers will make it known if the set is a BrickLinked set or the easy way to tell is the absence of original box and instruction manual.

Caveat: One can also purchase original boxes and instruction manuals on BrickLink so a clever seller can also package the whole combo of box, manuals and parts as a complete set.

Safest bet is still the reputation of the seller with lots of positive feedback. icon_rolleyes.gif

just realized what i wanna ask....

well, bought 79111 LEGO® Lone Ranger™ Constitution Train Chase sometime ago....
now finally got some time to play with it...
then now i plan to motorized it... seems like got 2 method...just not sure which one is better... pls advice...

method 1
follow this one, all instruction given (long reading though)
http://mocpages.com/moc.php/359154

method 2
lego way...
http://service.lego.com/cs-cz/helptopics/p...-motorize-79111

8879 Infrared Speed Remote Control
8884 Infrared Receiver
8883 M-Motor
and - either 88000 AAA Battery Box or 8878 Rechargeable Battery Box and 8887 10VDC Charger.

lego way seems simpler...but i not sure how to integrade 8883 M-Motor into the train
*
There is another way which was published in the Lego newsletter, not sure if it is the same as method 2 as I have yet to try it. Already ordered the parts which isn't too many. From memory less than 20 parts, all that is needed to widen the coal car to accommodate the battery box... I had the instructions but somehow misplaced it, will try to find it again... If you want to do some digging yourself you can try searching in Brickset, it was in one of the news. Have to drop the person a pm and he will email you a scan copy of the instructions.
