It'll be messed up if mod merges.

Edit: Added tank photo.

My tiny office tank. Increased population and added a floating plant to cope (hopefully) with nitrate removal. The end goal is to have a self sustaining tank like my collegue tongue.gif

Nice! Finally I could see a shrimp in there! laugh.gif

Best of luck in getting it self sustaining wink.gif

I detect a sarcastic tone there tongue.gif laugh.gif

It's more than one in the pic but crappy camera.

One observation though, when I bought the latest batch... they look relatively decent in the LFS but looking at it in the bag and even until this morning, most of them are quite transparent. Some even look closer to rilis than cherries.

Now it seems some of the color have came back? Is this even possible?

30++ or 300++ ? i once keep 500++ Malaya in an 50cm 57L tank, no problem at all. It depend on your filtration power and provide more o2 when
shrimp population is high, o2 not only for the shrimps but also for the beneficial bacteria in the filter to utilize, healthy and stronger BB to handle the increased bio-load.

Any alternatives that doesn't require an airpump?

They're too noisy (bubbly) and water splashes for the office environment.

laugh.gif  siphon the bugs that I can see into a container.. then pour the water though the white filter gauze.  luckily the gauze actually manage to trap these bugs. then pour it back into the tank. Very time consuming but managed to reduce quite a lot..till the next day when they reproduce again.. and the cycle continues  mad.gif

I tried this during my nematode infestation... continued doing it daily for a week. Caught a gazillion of them but one day don't do.... population goes back to normal. doh.gif

then how?  shocking.gif the only way is to restart the tank? rclxub.gif
*
I restarted but for the wrong reason.... my tank got WMD attacked when office was spraying disinfectant.

End up killing every non-plant living organism in the tank.

What you do every weekend now? without aircond?
*
Now I turn on the tank fan before leaving the office.... put on my auto top-off contraption and that's it.

Weather getting colder here now so I think this weekend no need to turn on liao.

Do you guys vacuum your gravel/substrate or just leave the shrimp poo to sink and decompose?

I don't vacuum the soil coz if I do the soil gets vacuumed too...  tongue.gif

Just let nature takes it's course... since shrimp bioloads are small... the poop even smaller. Still need it to generate BB  biggrin.gif

Btw, did you have any shrimp casualty today as you think you would? Hope not. wink.gif
*
Thanks. Must not be too paranoid then.

So far so good for the tank newbies... all accounted for + 1 successful molt.

Haiyah... I thought this time can have zero casualties when adding new shrimps but one just expired in front of my eyes. It was motionless between rocks for the whole morning then just fell sideways. Was barely alive when I picked it up.

So frustrating, I use drip method to acclimatize for almost 6 hour still like that. I even tested the difference between the water and its just like ~20 TDS different niah... other perimeters same. The bag water got even higher nitrate levels.

Haha... I witnessed similar thing just recently on the CRS. At least yours was barely alive when it was picked up... mine was a total goner... tongue.gif

Wow... you acclimate for a very long time even for RCS!  notworthy.gif My max thus far was only 3hrs. But of course if I happen to get a more sensitive species I'd likely to acclimate longer. Also doing drip method @ +/-1dps

For me I think sometimes it depends on luck as well... the shrimp may not have been so strong even @ lfs or wherever we buy it. Just tough luck we got a weak one(s) sometimes. Same for my fire reds... got 10... 1 died the next day but the rest are doing well still. Only on malayans did I not encounter any casualty *touch wood*
*
No choice.. noob like me have to do what it takes to minimize loss. Already loss waaaaay too many shrimps.

But you're right about the LFS thing. Between me and my collegues, we find that the shrimps from those chainstore high volume fish shops have a higher death rate than those ah pek shop. But the ah pek shop's quality quite terrible. doh.gif

You must've been feeding your shrimps too good they don't show much interest in it  tongue.gif
There's no harm in letting it be bro... chill...chill... doubt any harm would come from that small shell wink.gif
*
Speaking of which, I'm only feeding half the "recommended dosage" on the label and saturday/sundays are puasa days.

That makes 2 noobs here then... wink.gif
Yeah, and apart from that... different tanks have different water parameters. So what works on one may not work for all. Oh well... can't help it since we're into this hobby... we chose one that's not easy to rear...  laugh.gif

6 hour is way too long.  1-2 is enough unless tds different too wide. For prolong acclimating consider supply o2 to the shrimp be acclimated.
The safer is get shrimp that are already 2 week been in the lfs tank. Any early casautly already occur. What left is mostly the strongest.  However shrimp just be snapped too fast by keeper like us.
*
Last time I don't do so long but casualties alot.

Btw.. this is my nearby chainstore lfs fire red tank... this is only half the tank.
