Some updates.

I re-scaped my tank and more importantly, I changed my previously overkill LED light to one of those RGB type LED's. Really worth the money. It's way dimmer (controllable with the remote control) and at the same time, I can see the shrimps clearly since can tune the color to highlight red. Being dimmer, my shrimps don't hide as much anymore smile.gif

Unfortunately the photos don't show the effect

Hi Sniper,

I'm new to shrimp keeping. Mind to share what kind of light did you get? I'm interested to get one to replace my current LED light (use for planted tank) which is too bright and can't be adjusted. Whenever it is switched on the shrimps will become panic and run for place to hide.

vary, normally mths to a year and depend on what shrimp and their diet, i observed fire yellow shrimplet just feed on rotten ketapang leaf in a tank overflow filter compartment , grow form 1mm to 1 cm in around 5 week.
*
Hi arrow, any reason why the ketapang leaf can accelerate the shrimplet's growth? Will the leaf pollute or affect the water like normal shrimp food does if we leave it for too long inside the tank?

didn't measure the GH, I only came to realize it was 900 TDS by chance after I asked the Diomand Water service guy to test the water in my tank, only then I got myself a TDS pen, now, I keep it at TDS  200-300, they are happy n breeding so far...
*
How do you maintain your TDS level? Do you use your tap water during water change or Diamond water?

Hi arrow,

For shrimplets I heard that they are more sensitive in their first few weeks to water parameters change. Do we still perform water change as usual i.e. 10% - 20% per week or only top up will do just for these few weeks?

Anyone can advice wat to use restore mineral for RO water ?
*
I'm using Benibachi products like mineral rocks to slowly replenish the minerals to the water. So far so good. You can also try the Benibachi mineral powder and emergency water. Not sure about other methods as I'm a noob myself. tongue.gif

My daily working day routine. Use plastic spoon below to scoop up one paper cup of tank water (cos I still have this oil slick issue) and replenish with one cup of RO water re-mineralized with Up Aqua GH Builder. The replenishment cup sitting on top of my HOB filter has a small hole in it so it'll drip very slowly... ~ 45 mins to drip the cup"

Nice tank. What plants are those? Your marimo carpets have turned light green. Maybe can put a sponge filter for some surface agitation so the oil won't build up?

I wonder how often do you guys vacuum your substrates to clean off the built up debris? is it necessary to do it often if you have CRS?

Hi shrimp lovers,

This thread has been a thoroughly fascinating read. I've been meaning to get into the hobby and having read some of the sharings and comments here, I think I'm ready to give it a go.

I do have a few questions that I hope you guys can help shed some light on:

1. Is the blue tiger shrimp a good idea for a beginner? If not, would the blue jelly shrimp be a better option?

2. I'm thinking of mixing blue and red shrimps in 1 tank but I'm worried about interbreeding that will affect colour quality. Any advice?

My ideal tank at the moment is one that looks like Sniper's (a personal size ideal for personal attention). To avoid committing accidental genocide, I will follow the guidelines provided in this thread and I'm prepared to start with a small colony of 5 to 10 to limit the blood on my noobie hands.

Any suggestions on viable colour mixes or any general issues are more than welcomed.

Cheers
*
Hi Zheng Fai,

Nice to meet you. Sifu arrow and other experienced keepers here would be able to answer all of your questions. I'm just starting out like you but here's my 2 cents. Blue tiger like any caridina species are sensitive and would definitely need a chiller and so it's not really a beginner's shrimp. It's better to start out with neocaridina like blue jelly first as they are more hardy and you will have less headache and heartache. You seems to like blue alot. hehe.

As long as they are the same species they will interbreed. I think it is better off to start with larger tank i.e. 2 ft tank if you have the space as it's easier to maintain water parameters. Once you have more experience and budget, then probably you can try the caridinas like CRS or blue tiger. Patient is key in this hobby my friend.

First -Brand , second - ingredients , all 3 the will increase TDS and GH. How much and how much to use and how fast the effect vary on each type.
Third - price different alot with benibachi the most expensive , then mosura follow by Up Aqua.

But come to think of it , if anyone can afford a rm70 or above for one bee shrimps , these product price are just a tad of it.
If you want fast and also proven safe record on increase RO water tds/gh , go for mosura.
Benibachi will cost more if you on budget.

To buy
Mosura - try aquashop in lelong
Benibachi - benibachi reseller in malaysia , try search facebook for details.
Up aqua - some LFS in KL stock them. last saw them in fish depot and 88 petsmart.

Hi bro arrow,

With so many types of shrimp products in the market with different brands. It's sort of confusing rclxub.gif . May I know what are the equivalent products of each branch that perform more or less the same functions? So that I know I'm not getting two products that do the same thing. I'm narrowing down to Benibachi and Mosura products like the following.

Benibachi active water = Mosura ...??
Benibachi emergency water = Mosura ...??
MOSURA BT-9 = Any equivalent?
Mosura Mineral Plus = Benibachi..?
etc.

appreciate your advice.

Started to see quite a number of detritus worms in my shrimp tank. Guess i was overfeeding even though i'm feeding very little once every few days. Do you have these worms in your tank? How do you get rid of them? Feed less and perform gravel vacuum?

hi arrow
why is it my malaya shrimp seems more "shy" than my cherry shrimp???
especially when i switch ON my light..
is it normal???
*
I have asked the exact question to arrow before, as the Malaya shrimps that I have did the same thing. If not wrong Malaya shrimps are mostly wild caught from the river and in their natural habitat, they live under the shade most of the time. That's why they freaked out and run for cover the moment they see too much light. While most cherry shrimps that we have now have been selectively bred and adapted to our environment.

yes, you can do that, it refer as sump system, but imho i dun like bare tank, that why i find monster fish and goldfish tank so lifeless and cold.
actually shrimp have very minimal bioload, waste is not a major problem, the major task is maintaining a stable and mature environment to them
.
*
Hi arrow, since shrimp soil will lose its buffer power after 1 or 2 years, what can we do to maintain the ph after that? Replace the soil or put in additives?

Normally we either change soil , topup soil or put in additives like Benibachi fulvic grain(last 6mths).
*
In that case, adding fulvic grain is the much easier option.

Hi bros, Need some advice here. I'm using two Hailea air pumps for my shrimp tanks which give out very strong smells something like burnt plastics. Problem is my tanks are in my room and my wife couldn't stand the smell. Do you have this problem? Or are you using any air pump that doesn't give out such smell? Is there any alternative to airpump that can drive air to UGF and sponge filter? Pls help.
