For the Note series, the main differentiator is the S-Pen using a Wacom active digitizer, and Samsung's nicely packaged software to take advantage of it across the OS. I personally like the workflow enhancement you get when your device can actually replace the paper notebook, so I am very keen for active digitizer devices, of which currently only the Note series has it in the smartphone/phablet form factor. Larger devices with active digitizers (Wacom or N-Trig) tend to be very expensive (RM5k++) tablets/convertibles from notebook manufacturers.
First off, I want to put things in perspective. I must state that we can no longer think of our devices as "phones" but COMPUTERS. Therefore, since computers have been around for the last 60 years or so, there is nothing "new" or "innovative" to expect from our devices, except for "faster, better, cheaper". Maybe not cheaper but we have seen ASP (Average Selling Price) falling across the board.
And because it is a computer, you have to treat it as such, ie regular backups, some periodic cleansing/factory reset and practice safe computing habits.
Note that of course it is not to be compared with the CISC type computers of the Intel x86 desktop/notebook genre, but it is still a computer nonetheless of the RISC variety, specifically the ARM family, with a huge number of variations across manufacturers. The focus of ARM is for performance per watt, which allows low power computing on the go which has been the dream of computing since its dawn.
Anything else, feel free to contribute.
Information will be added as it becomes available.

13MP Rear-Facing Camera: Gracing the rear of the GALAXY Note 3 is a 13 megapixel wide-angle camera with Samsung Smart Stabilization, their take on Optical Image Stabilization. OIS uses hardware corrections to negate camera shake and provide sharp images.
Ultra HD (4K) Video Recording: 2013 is the year of the Ultra HDTVs and with them come a host of video recording capable cameras and smartphones to provide content. This means that video can be recorded on the GALAXY Note 3 and played back on an Ultra HDTV at 2160p. To put this in to perspective Ultra HD has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 (8.3 megapixels) which is 4 times the pixels of Full HD at 1920 × 1080 (2.1 megapixels).
2MP Front-Facing Camera: A discreet front-facing 2 megapixel camera will provide 1080p video during video chat. The greater the resolution, the better the video chat or call experience for your partner. But don't forget the dual-view option that allows you to also capture video using the rear-facing camera.
Full HD Display The GALAXY Note 3 has a new 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display. The screen is bigger and brighter than that of the GALAXY Note 2 with a pixel density of 386 PPI. This means that you will not only have a crisper image but you won't have to squint at the screen under direct sunlight. The display is graced with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and should provide greater protection for the WACOM-enabled digitizer.
Hi-Fi Audio The GALAXY Note 3 now supports 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Fi audio. In basic terms, you are now getting playback at studio quality levels. Before any argues a lack of subtle or no difference between current offerings of 16-bit/44.1kHz, your ears may not distinguish between them but your eyes do. Crazy I know! But the human body is just one of those miracles of design we may never fully understand.
Adaptive Display and Sound Adaptive Display is a very simple. It changes the brightness or contrast of the screen depending on what you are viewing and the lighting conditions of your environment. This same technology will also adjust audio properties such as equalizer profiles based on the content you are experiencing. If you watch a YouTube video while cooking, the screen automatically switches to cinema and lowers the brightness while also switching from the default equalizer profile to one more suitable for movie playback.
Removable Battery and MicroSD Card Samsung stays the course despite the current trend by most tech companies to switch to a unibody design. This keeps the battery captive and forces you to send your smartphone in for a costly battery replacement. It also limits your smartphone memory to whatever it shipped with. The GALAXY Note 3 has a removable 3200 mAh battery and allows for a swappable MicroSD card up to 64GB. I for one always have a backup battery and alternate MicroSD to match either a work or play profile.
802.11ac WiFi This WiFi standard is essentially an updated version of 802.11n or Wireless-N. 802.11ac currently has speeds of 1.7 GHz, limited by current hardware, but can reach a real-world maximum of 2.5 GHz. This means that the GALAXY Note 3 can work and play faster than most devices on the market provided you have a matching Wireless-AC router.
New Multitasking Options The GALAXY Note 3 now lets users do more with an enhanced Multi Window option. Owners can now launch the same app twice. Multi-Window also allows users drag and drop content, so it's easy to share from one window to another through quick command icons.
S Pen 3.0 The new S Pen reinvents and modernizes the classic note-taking experience by enabling everyday tasks with just one tap and click. The advanced stylus is designed as a communication driver between the owner and their GALAXY Note 3. By creating essential input and control features, the S Pen plays an integral role in how one interacts with the GALAXY Note.
Air Command This quick access S Pen action lets owners quickly open up; Action Memo, Scrapbook, Screen Write, S Finder, Pen Window. You can access this from anywhere on the GALAXY Note 3 screen by simply hovering the S Pen over the screen and pressing the button on the stylus.
S Finder This option allows a GALAXY Note 3 owner to search for memos, contacts, and notes. S Finder even recognizes handwriting and symbols. The GALAXY Note 3 can even sync with and search through Evernote.
Pen Window This option allows a GALAXY Note 3 owner to draw a square anywhere on the app being viewed in order to pull up and fill the drawing with a number of commonly used apps, such as Calculator.
Anti-Theft Features Locate My Mobile displays the current location of the lost mobile on a map and tracks movement history during the last 12 hours. Lock My Mobile can remotely lock your mobile so that no one else can use the device. And finally, Ring My Mobile rings a bell for 1 minute at the highest volume regardless of the current sound settings.
WatchOn Smart Remote For those of you who had a chance to program and use WatchOn, you know that the GALAXY S4 effectively becomes a smart remote control rivaling the pricey remotes sold by TV accessory manufacturers. Now this feature is unleashed on the GALAXY Note 3 with its greatly improved screen promising to make the GALAXY Note 3 a powerful Smart Remote.
Air Gestures This feature allows owners to control the GALAXY Note 3 by using gestures done over the upper part of the smartphone without ever making contact with the screen. Quick Glance lets you view basic notifications while the screen is off. Air Jump lets you scroll up or down in emails and webpages. Air Browse lets you browse images, webpages, songs, or memos. Air Call-Accept lets you accept calls by swiping over the sensor.
Samsung KNOX For those of us who are security-minded and want to ensure that a stolen smartphone doesn't become a liability, it is welcome news that Samsung has brought a global-ready version of KNOX to the GALAXY Note 3. SamsungKNOX essentially separates your smartphone in to two parts; personal and business. Neither side can interact with the other. Samsung KNOX provides Platform Security, Application Security, Mobile Device Management and Samsung KNOX for Enterprise.
Smart Pause While some may call this feature gimmicky, those who have used Smart Pause on the GALAXY S4 know that this a great feature. Just like Samsung's smartphone flagship, the GALAXY Note 3 can pause video playback when you look away from the screen. Samsung has worked closely with content providers to ensure that features that were once limited to in-house apps can now control 3rd party apps.
S Voice With Hands Free S Voice has been upgraded and a feature called S Drive has been added. S Drive is useful for those who must have constant access to their smartphone, even while driving. This feature does exist on the GALAXY Note 2 as Driving Mode which causes S Voice to read your texts, report who is calling, allows you to control your music player or open common applications by voice command. This option enables safer driving and, in some states, may save you from being ticketed by the police.
GALAXY Gear Although the GALAXY Gear is not a feature, I believe it will quickly become a must-have accessory. This is basically a tethered Smart Watch that uses S Relay to seamlessly transfer content and alerts from the GALAXY Note 3 to the GALAXY Gear and vice-versa. Beyond sharing content, the GALAXY Gear also controls the GALAXY Note 3 allowing you to send messages, make phone calls, request directions and a slew of other actions. It is also speculated that the Note 3 uses the S800 M8974AB version, which is the highest binned version of the CPU with even higher GPU speeds. Updated as we know more.

NOTE: the Qualcomm S800 version will show 2.4GB Free RAM, while the Exynos version will show 2.7GB free. This seems to be due to the GPU architecture, where Qualcomm requires more reserved RAM.
The Samsung 3GB LPDDR3 mobile DRAM uses six of the industry's smallest 20-nanometer (nm) class* four gigabit (Gb) LPDDR3 chips, in a symmetrical structure of two sets of three chips stacked in a single package only 0.8 millimeters high. With a full line-up of package dimensions, Samsung's new ultra-slim memory solutions will enable thinner smartphone designs and allow for additional battery space, while offering a data transfer speed of up to 2,133 megabits per second (Mbps) per pin.

Why USB 3.0 - All phones to date have the USB 2.0 interface. This is rated at a max of 480Mbps. USB 3.0 is rated for 4.8Gbps, a 10 fold increase in theoretical maximum transmission speed. Your Gb's of will transfer much faster via USB 3.0 to your external storage device or PC. Of course you need a USB 3.0 port or compliant peripheral as well.
Before the RDF kicks in, I'm given to understand that the Lightning connectors on idevices are still USB 2.0. > link <
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 sports USB 3.0 connector for faster transfers and charging - Xeactorz .....Oh, and if you’re worried about losing that micro B USB 3.0 cable and having no way to charge or manage files on your device, don’t be. Similar to those backward-compatible USB 3.0 flash drives, the Note 3 will allow you to connect a standard microUSB cable as well, so Samsung has every base covered.

Galaxy Note 3 Will Debut New Radio Power Management System, Uses 20% Less Power And 30% Less Heat Than Existing Tech ......Qualcomm achieves these enhancements in the QFE1100 by using a technology called Envelope Tracking. Essentially, the hardware tracks changes in the radio frequency and adjusts the power amplifier accordingly. Unlike traditional methods which perpetually run at full power, or those that only adjust the level when the radio is barely active, this technology can limit power usage only to what is necessary at the moment of transmission. This not only reduces the amount of energy consumed for communication, but also significantly reduces leftover power that is needlessly converted into excess heat. Qualcomm claims this can reduce radio power consumption by up to 20% and heat production by up to 30%, all while improving the speed and reliability of the cellular signal.
Knox - Enterprise Security !!!

This is an interesting high-level overview of Samsung's security, including Knox. I find the "authorized OSs" part interesting. Notice the s on the end of OSs. The Knox marketing manual states that it is possible to change the device keys securely, but makes no reference to how it is done. Any ideas?

Hi guys,
I just came back from the hands-on session of the Note 3. Here are the answers to the questions that some of you guys wanted me to ask Samsung.
(Q)Does the Note 3 use Gorilla Glass for its display? If yes, which generation?|
(A)Gorilla Glass 3
(Q)Are there any advancements in the S Pen technology used in the Note 3? Is it still using Wacom tech like the Note 2?
(A)The new S Pen reinvents and modernizes the classic note-taking experience by providing the ability to accomplish everyday tasks with just one click. The advanced S Pen is designed to fully function as a communication driver between the phone and the user by creating essential input and control features. A simple click of the S Pen button while hovering over the screen introduces users to Air Command, a palette of five powerful features that truly make daily tasks easier and faster. With the Air Command feature, there is no need to toggle between screens, memorize commands or look up different menus.
For these enhancements, the GALAXY Note 3 uses the Wacom technology and is capable of 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity for a better user experience. The S Pen also features a changeable pen tip that is softer, which makes for a better handwriting experience. The S Pen on the GALAXY Note 3 can be detected from up to 1.7mm from the screen, an improvement from the GALAXY Note II.
(Q)Is the Note 3 using a PenTile RGBG matrix?
(A)The GALAXY Note 3 uses the Pentile RGBG matrix.
(Q) How did Samsung manage to make the Note 3 lighter than the Note 2 despite the slight increase in display size and physical size?
(A)The 5.7-inch screen Full HD Super AMOLED screen of the GALAXY Note 3 is larger than the previous GALAXY Note 2 device but because of the thin bezel, the overall size of the device stayed almost the same. The new Gorilla Glass on the GALAXY Note 3 helps to reduce its overall thickness and weight. In addition, we also optimised the mechanical design and HW circuit placement which contributes to the slimmer and lighter design of the GALAXY Note 3.
(Q)Will there wireless charging kits available for the Note 3?
(A)There will be a Wireless Charger Cover for the GALAXY Note 3.
(Q) Can the Note 3 play 1080p 10bit video with flac?
(A) 10bit video playback is not supported on the GALAXY Note 3.
(Q)Does Samsung Mobile Singapore have the 7 days exchange policy for the Note 3 (1 to 1 brand new within 7 days at same place of purchase)?
(A)This exchange policy is not available for the GALAXY Note 3.
(Q) Is the USB cable bundled 3.0?
(A) The USB is bundled 3.0.
(Q) Is there bundled S-Window case? Will it be available at launch?
(A) We have the at launch the S View cover for the GALAXY Note 3.
(Q) Though its stated to support microSD up to 64GB, is there a chance it can support 128GB memory cards?
(A) It can only support up to 64GB.
(Q) Is the LED notification light on the Note 3 multi-color like the S4 and Note 2?
(A)Yes, the LED notification light comes in different colours on the GALAXY Note 3. __________________ Thanks and regards, Sidney

TechRadar - Hands on: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 review - 2013-09-05 - mudkipryan94 A short review, but I would like to highlight one of the comments. I am not being a Samsung fanboi but surely a review should be as objective as possible, and personal bias should be stated up front.
QUOTE
nellymosserFri 11:38 This is a fairly ridiculous review - and in fairness, not very helpful. The article seems peppered with your own personal tastes. We're not reading this to see if it suits you, we're reading it to see if it suits us. It is for us to decide on the leather look. And your comment, "Most people will never use multi-window, as nine times out of 10 you'll find you're using it for the sake of it." Actually, is for us to decide if we like the multi-window option or not to - Pinterest/Facebook/Twitter users, people who actually do like to look at links on the web but not lose their threads - already find it useful in Notes 1 & 2.
Instead of your own personal tastes, how about telling us what we need to know? What about battery life? That battery sounds massive. Is it? How about telling us about sound quality? Connectivity? Any changes to the home page? How it feels to hold? Can you drop it? Does it have gorrilla glass? What is the point/function of the octo core - how good is the super HD filming?
Different people want different things from a smartphone - that's why there are so many. How about you try to think about your spectrum of readers - your customers - when you write. At least that something that Samsung is trying to do here.
.....These smartphones are all top of the range devices, and the bar has been set extremely high. There are very few perceivable differences between the four of them and personal preference might be the biggest factor that makes you prefer one over the other. What we do know is that with such great options from a wide variety of manufacturers, the competition will compel OEMs to make even better devices which is a win for you, the consumer.
It’s a battle royale, and these are the most latest and most advanced smartphones in the world.
...The S-Pen is what actually makes the Note lineup so special, and Samsung has surely provided the Note 3 with even more S-Pen compatible apps, handwriting-recognition features and drawing tools.
There is also one more thing different about the new Note - it arguably looks better than ever (if though not everybody here at the office agrees). Samsung has its entire back to look like leather and the Note 3 looks just amazing....
.....As phones get bigger and tablets get more ubiquitous, it's good to see a device do something different that actually justifies the increased size. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3's multitasking features are particularly well-thought-out -- but whether you think it looks good in leather is up to you.
.....and it was clear that the phablet – now a word in the Oxford dictionary – was here to stay, and that Samsung was the unchallenged king of the phablet market.
a smartphone having a screen which is intermediate in size between that of a typical smartphone and a tablet computer:a 3.5 inch screen is inadequate in a market that is trending towards phablets
Origin: early 21st century: blend of phone1 and tablet

Short Reviews by Note 3 Thread Members
Note from a thread member, but useful to see the power of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB RAM:
Galaxy Note 3 Tips & Tricks Ep. 4: How Fast Is The Galaxy Note 3? It Is A Multitasking Powerhouse Running 12 Apps at the same time !!!
The consensus among thread members (they have the Xperia Z Ultra as well either currently or previously) is that the Note 3 screen is better than the Xperia Z Ultra's screen.
Many phone also can last you years bro. It depends on what you need. This phone is 3GB ram S800 Proc FHD Removable Battery. I think is the best spec you can buy with money now. I believe this phone should last you 2 to 3 years easily.

The S800 proc really turbo charge Note3. Strange i don't experience any heat issue as well. Damn i am a happy camper.

I used the note 2 for almost a year, the first time you get the note 3 and turn it on you'd go WOW. The screen is just that much sharper, especially on such a huge screen. It's so much snappier, although you won't notice it in whatsapp and fb for some reason Camera is much improved, especially at night, the thing actually focuses properly, as compared to the note 2 which just keeps searching for AF lock. Battery however.. after 2 days, I find that the note 3 is more power hungry than the note 2 This could be cause I had a custom rom on the note 2 though, I was getting 6/7 hours of screen on time every day, with 18 hours of it being on. With the note 3 I'm only getting 4/5 hours HOWEVER, this is still my third day with the phone, and maybe it's cause I use the camera a lot throughout the day, and now I tend to watch youtube videos cause of the LTE. So there you have it, a simple comparison

Yes, I'm not a S-Pen frequent user previously but this Note 3's S-Pen really amazes me with its performance.
I cannot deny that the Air Command makes things so automated and easy now.

Those who have queried earlier this Note3 is a fantastic piece of gadget. I had never love the SPen as much as it now. Camera is great n snappy. Performance I can say is the best I have used n even better than my other XZU. I have posted benchmarks vs XZU yesterday. Those who think XZU is too big this phone just right size for comfort pocketability. Third day using it n yet to find a single problem or bug. Battery life as of now easily match Note2 n appears slightly better. Can only give better assessment after few more days full charge n usage However using app galaxy charging current I only recorded 1200mAh input on original cable, htc, Sony, blackberry cable.( using ipad 2.1A charger). Yet to use the original charger. Similar figure using my blackberry Playbook car charger (2A). On Note2 n S4 I recorded 1800mAh.

A human being can only read 'so much' of text at any given time.
Same reason why I don't find it a problem when I'm reading on either my phones. When comparing my current Note III, iPhone 5 and XZU in terms of reading experience, they are pretty much the same.
Just that more scrolling is required on iPhone 5, and picture viewing on web pages are just a bit nicer on XZU. Other than this, the Note III excels as a good in-betweener for what we can call 'the PERFECT screen size' in the phone world now.

After using this Note3 more than a day, I have decided to use it as my main phone n relegate the XZU as secondary phone/mini tablet. Initially I was concerned about its smaller display size but this worry ended up unfounded. The Note3 is a very snappy phone n I find myself using the SPen often vs Note2. The SPen is a vast improvement over Note2. I am using Holo launcher n Spen still work magnificently with it Yet to find a single bug with the phone

When plug in Note 2 or Note 3 cable into my Note 3, I can't detect from Kies 3 or even from Windows (but I can see from phone is charging when connected to my laptop). However, I'm using same laptop to connect to my Note 2 without any issue. Any setting I need to be done from my Note 3?

There is no settings. It is simply plug n play once you have the phone drivers installed. Try another usb port or with another micro usb cable. If still cannot send in service center to check the usb port. Mine can easily detect on my desktop XP, netbook win7 n Vaio Win8 ( this I did not even install kies or any Samsung phone drivers)

However, you can use the "Direct pen input" function to bring up the older type of handwriting input panel which allows for faster writing compared to the new handwriting panel in the S-note app.
Been using the "Direct pen input" and it's a dream to use :)

News about Samsung and region-locking their phones
Sammobile - The Update text: [b]UPDATE:[/b] While Samsung’s wordings aren’t very clear, it seems that the Galaxy Note 3 will actually be usable everywhere, but not before it is activated with a SIM from the region it was bought in. Once you activate it/use it with a local SIM, you’ll be able to visit other regions/travel abroad and use it with SIM cards from that particular region without issues. This is likely to reduce grey imports by retailers and those who want to make a quick buck by importing the device and selling it at higher prices, as the retailer would have to open the box to activate it before selling it, which would make it less attractive to a buyer. However, until Samsung makes an even clearer statement, you probably should refrain from importing even a Note 3 that has been activated in its home region.
CODE
AndroidCentral's article excerpt: [b]Region-locked, except for when it's not[/b] [i]The region-lock only kicks in if you first "activate" it with a SIM from outside the list of approved countries.[/i]
As it happens, the crucial factor is which SIM card you first use when you set up the phone. Lars from AllAboutSamsung.de was given information to this effect when he got in touch with Samsung Germany, and it's since been confirmed by Nirave Gondhia, who got his hands on additional Note 3s to test the theory. A second Note 3, first "activated" with a UK SIM, could then be used with a UAE SIM — the same one rejected by the first device.
(This also explains what happened with our own unlocked Note 3. It was never region-locked, as we used our EE (UK) SIM to run through the initial setup.)
So the region-lock only kicks in if you first "activate" it — i.e., switch on the phone and run through setup — with a SIM from outside the list of approved countries. It's probably a measure designed to ensnare grey (unauthorized) importers of Samsung phones. And it means you should be very careful about which SIM card you use to activate any "unlocked" Samsung phone from now on.
SUMMARY OF THE WHOLE REGION LOCKING AFFAIR
QUOTE
confuzan,Sep 28 2013, 11:49 PM
joytest perhaps you want to post this article up regarding region locking.
summary:- -note3 and other samsung flagships manufactured after july will have region locking in EU and US. -booting up for the first time in this phone must use EU/US sim cards. after the first activation, it will be sim unlocked. -booting up for the first time with a sim card from non EU/US operators will lock the phone. need to go to samsung service center to unlock.
what this means:- -samsung wants to prevent parallel import from EU/US to other regions -AP set from EU/US will most likely be activated already before it can be used in other regions.

My personal opinion is that naked phones are just accidents waiting to happen, and also that so-called "cases" that leave the top and bottom bezels exposed do not deserve the term "case". IMHO, a real case covers the entire bezel, the back and also a rim lip on the front face of the device. To each his/her own.

One piece of advice. PLEASE CHECK APP PERMISSIONS BEFORE INSTALLING. An app should not have permissions beyond what its stated functionality should be. For example, a Wallpaper app should have NO PERMISSIONS. A Launcher will naturally have access to permissions for Calling and SMS and Phone Hardware (vibrate settings etc).
If you install MyHotSexyGirlLiveWallpaper with access to Calls, Network Status and SMS, then ....
Semantics of Fear Applications claiming to be “antivirus” are merely detecting what has the potential to be malware, something that a developer of an application may have snuck into the software code that is meant to steal data or interact with the device in such a way as to cause it to send premium SMS messages at the victim’s expense. This is more correctly defined as being a Trojan or form of spyware, but given the years of conditioning by security firms “Virus” sounds a lot scarier.
Common Senseless Although these detection capabilities may be marginally useful to the end user, they do not by any stretch of the imagination fit the definition of an “antivirus” or replace common sense – that is to say, being cautious about which applications you download and then carefully reviewing the permissions for each application if you do install it.
Does that “Barney Wallpaper” app you download really need access to your contacts, call history and location?
That's certainly the case with our latest doom and gloom story -- a fright-inducing app signature vulnerability brought into the public eye by a new security company called Bluebox (which, like almost every company that releases scary-sounding info about Android threats, is a business built around the sales of Android security software -- go figure).
In the meantime, as is usually the case in these scenarios, there's absolutely no cause for alarm. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Whether you're surfing the Web on your PC or getting online from your phone, a little caution and some common sense will go a long way in keeping you safe from the big, bad virus monsters lurking around our virtual worlds.
You may share your findings of new toys in the thread. I will add worthwhile app links here. The apps below can usually be found on Google Play store. Some have separate versions on XDA or other places where the dev either provides a free version or free with ads version. These are listed with clickable links.

Automation IntelliCover - turns the screen off automatically when you put your device in your pockets, close its flip cover etc. - VoiVod Llama Profile Flow Secure Settings by INTANGIBLEOBJECT + its "Helper" within the app - antt00 Tasker
Communications (Chat/IM/VoIP) *Note: due to the nature of chat apps, some may be badly coded and cause heavy battery drain. Please let me know and I can update which ones drain or have fixed drain problems. Line Skype Skype (XDA Modded) Viber <=depending on version, may be battery drainer (2013-04-22) Wechat <=known battery drainer (2013-04-22) Whatsapp
