If the condition permits, then the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) will permit you to drop a gear (or two). If the condition doesn't permit to do so, the TCU will never allow you to drop the gear to protect the transmission.
The VT3 has lots of safety mechanism built into it, so no worries.
As for reliability, the VT3 unit is essentially a unit based on VT1, developed by ZF to be used in Mini and MG cars in the early 2000s. Nothing major has been reported by the owners in the net, so it is safe to assume that the reliability is good without counting small cases of manufacturing defect. There's also a few Preve who bring their CVT into the track and no unwanted problems arise after the event.

QUOTE(BravoZeroTwo @ Oct 26 2013, 06:21 PM) what are the technological differences between the Preve sedan and SS ? thanks. Even was told that Preve LE is no SS in comparison. Suprima S has electronic vacuum pump (EVP) and the CVT model is VT3+ with improvement in operating noise & refinement.

QUOTE(dares @ Oct 28 2013, 08:32 PM) I enquired directly to Kristof of Punch Powertrain about the improvements on the VT3. My questions were forwarded to his colleague Fikeri Yusof. the following is the email exchange There was a couple of intermediate email exchange but due to irrelevance I will omit them here. The next relevant email is below So as you guys can see the improvements is not only software, but also the mechanical parts. Kudos to the team for answering my questions so thoroughly when other carmakers will probably shrug me off. Goes to show Proton is not ready to rest on it's achievement with the CFE+CVT powertrain design. oh, so it is from your own...

QUOTE(mystvearn @ Nov 7 2013, 09:22 PM) Does anyone know why the plastic grille next to the front fog lights have slightly different pattern for the left and right fog light? The left car fog light seems to be deeper, while the right fog light on the car is shallower. Here is a pic. http://paultan.org/2013/08/28/driven-proto..._s_review_-021/In the brochure it hows both are shallow (right side version) For CFE, the one with hole is to guide air into the intercooler, and another has no hole at all. For IAFM+ (not yet launch), both foglight covers has no holes at all. This post has been edited by V12Kompressor: Nov 7 2013, 10:06 PM

QUOTE(mystvearn @ Nov 8 2013, 08:40 AM) Thanks Why not make both with holes for streamline design? I don't mind at all. front grill is better to have less opening as possible for less drag and better aerodynamics. helps a bit with FC.

QUOTE(Boy96 @ Nov 9 2013, 09:53 AM) They are just supporting Toyota since Vios got 1.5.. It is not they (the government of thailand) support Toyota, but rather it is Toyota who lobbied for those policies. The government of Thailand is forced to implement those policies in favor of Toyota because they can't afford to lose the billions of dollars of FDI poured in by Toyota alone in their country. However, fear not. THere are reports saying that next gen proton engine will be a 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2. The 1.2 and 1.5 could be turbocharged too, along with the 2.0 and 2.2.

It is not all about losing to Proton, it is all about losing to other manufacturers. That is why when they are on top now, they begin to cement their position by lobbying for policies favouring them. It is all about holding the status quo.

QUOTE(Niv86 @ Jan 27 2014, 05:16 PM) SC have solution for light flickers? SC wont have the solution for it. They will just reply it is normal. It was this flickering thing that causes premature headlamp bulb malfunction in Preve, aka "pirate eye issue". I don't know bout Suprima will share the same fate or not.

QUOTE(Niv86 @ Jan 28 2014, 11:01 AM) will changing to HID bulb solve the issue? HIDs comes with inverter which stabilizes the input current before output it back to the bulbs. Again, there is no concrete evidence that HID will solve the issue, so lets just put it as plausible.

QUOTE(minizian @ Feb 28 2014, 10:24 PM) Omg tested suprima at the autofest. The CVT is quite comparable to City IDSI CVT with addition woosh of torque from 1.7 rpm. My uncle said his preve CVAT is more jerky than city one. Perhaps proton have mod suprima CVT software? surprise with boot size, can swallow my road bike if put down the seats The Suprima is the first Proton to debut with VT3+, essentially an improved version of VT3 found in the Preve. The benefit of VT3+ is improvement in Noise, Vibration and Harshness. It is not "jerky" and much much more quieter than VT3.
