Can replace one tyre only?

Currently one of my tires botak on the outer side due to uneven wear. That tyre also has some tear on it.
Can i just change that tyre only or have to change a pair? If i change a pair, what can i do with the other tyre? Other tyres are left with about 40% thread. |

The spare tyre is not the same size. Will the tyre shop pay something to me for the good 40% tyre or i better take it home just in case i need it in the future?
