hi all,

My bro is looking to buy a new laptop for his studies, but what i think is he is going to use it mostly for games. That's pretty typical and I don't blame him

within the budget of RM2,000. I'm looking at the below laptop.

ASUS A550CC-XX530H A-SERIES 15.6" LAPTOP/ NOTEBOOK
- Asus A550CC-XX530H A-Series 15.6" Laptop/ Notebook
- Intel® Core™ i5-3337U-1.8GHz
- 4GB DDR3 RAM, 750GB SATA HDD
- NVIDIA® GeForce® GT720M
- Genuine Windows® 8

I understand that this is MORE that suffice for powerpoints and excels. This should be enough for most games at moderate settings too right? If I'm not mistaken, he plays Dota2...I'm not sure what other games la.

Please help.

Any sellers can pm me too!

Any sifu can help recommend notebooks for :

1. any reliable brand
2. price 2k to 3k
3. everyday usage like movie, surfing, microsoft office, adobe illustrator
4. processor at least i5-3337U
5. memory 4gb at least (maybe 2gb + free 2gb)
6. storage at least 750gb
7. graphic NVIDIA GT 740M will be great
8. DVD RW optional

And also what do you think of Sony VIAO?

Thanks in advance. Would really appreciate your advice.

Among your usage, only illustrator need that kind of power. And if you want to run illustrator really smooth, should aim for more RAM (8GB), and get a SSD (256G ~ RM600).
Don't be restricted by the HDD capacity. Prices difference between 1TB, 750GB, 500GB are minimal.

Yes, i5 and GT720M is more than sufficient for Excel and PowerPoints. Dota2, if he turn up the detail levels, then it will lag.
For the budget, if you want to indulge his "gaming need", aim for models spec with GT740M smile.gif

thicker laptops have better air flow, so they are more cooler. but still, i would recommend you to go out and molest the laptop before you make any moves. sometimes personal preferences are playing in people's minds.

I also would ask you to buy this model. I already bought one yesterday , so far I really happy with it. Design mybe a little bit dull but later on you only care about the performance rather than the design smile.gif

I hope you will consider this model. Good luck for you smile.gif

haha, no worries. i might spend some lots of money for a laptop in the future. currently happy with my Elitebook 6930p, so no intentions to change a laptop at the moment. laugh.gif

what i only care is performance and pricing, not laptop aesthetics. smile.gif

My vote goes to the Y400/Y410p, better performance laugh.gif
Touchscreen is not so useful on a normal notebook, not really worth it. Some more since it is touch-capable, it will become another potential feature to spoil, and mind you, they are not cheap yo tongue.gif

What make you link up Linux with avoiding overheating / wifi issues?  hmm.gif
Anyway, you are pretty much relying on community support to make sure Linux run well on laptop if models don't come pre-installed with Linux.

You can negotiate with Dell online sales agents at Dell website nod.gif
Can try chatting with a few since different agents will give different deals icon_rolleyes.gif
