Would appreciate some advice / options.

Want a small laptop/netbook for travel.
11.6 inch or so.
Budget RM 1k or less
Use - just to check email, flight details, backup some pic, skype
Lighter better
If can run Linux without issue, even better i.e. without overheat, wifi issue, etc

Already have 15in i5 for work. Enough power already.

Thanks.

What make you link up Linux with avoiding overheating / wifi issues? hmm.gif
Anyway, you are pretty much relying on community support to make sure Linux run well on laptop if models don't come pre-installed with Linux.

Hi. Im finding one that is good for gaming but doesnt have to be very good. As long as it doesnt lag for games like battlefield 3 or hitman absolution at RM 1500 > RM 2500. I was looking at lenovo Y480 ( the one with core i7 , nvidia GT 650M 2 gb , 1TB hard disk , Windows 8  @RM 2499 ) and lenovo essential G400s ( core i5 , nvidia GT 720 2gb , 500GB hard disk , Windows 8 @RM 1700). Which one does not have much problem? Or is there any better one out there? Im not sure is 500GB is good enough for medium gaming. I only wanted a good cpu , gpu , at least 1 usb 3.0 and 2 usb 2.0 , windows 7 or 8 and the look of the laptop isnt very bad. I dont mind a heavy one cause im not a collegue student and i wont bring it outside. Like only once every year. So it doesnt have to be thin. Just a good one and a long lasting one since ill be keeping his for atleast 3 years. Thats all I need. Thanks
*
Taper your expectation icon_rolleyes.gif
Depends on what resolution and what details level you play in, Battlefield 3 or Hitman Resolution will demand different CPU & GPU power.

Y480 is EOL already. You probably will not find brand new unit.

Gaming performance has nothing to do with HDD capacity.

G400s with GT720M, can play those 2 games at 1366x768 resolution at low details level.

Whether a laptop will last long or not depends on luck and your TLC.

With your budget, look for laptop that spec with GT740M.

Asus
K46CB-WX060H, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 750GB, W8, 4-cell, OD

Dell
Inspiron 14R, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x768, Touch) @RM2299 [2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8 , 6 cell
Inspiron 14R, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) @RM2499[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Ubuntu 12.04 , 6 cell; W8SL@RM2699

HP
Pavilion 14-N059TX, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099[2.03kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8

Lenovo
Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT750M@RM2499, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS, 120wPSU, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty
Z400 touch, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x768, touch)@RM2199, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty

Toshiba
Satellite L40-AS109Xb/G/W, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, 3 years local warranty

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
Use the remaining of your budget to increase RAM (4G stick ~ RM100 (Asus)), extend warranty period (Dell, to 3 years ~ RM300), buy SSD (128G ~ RM300) to replace the HDD (keep as external HDD).

However, I am trying to look for a package that has Windows 7 installed.

Any recommendations? As I see the one that you recommend above is running Windows 8 instead of 7.
*
For consumer class laptop, all new models / units only come pre-installed with W8.
If you want W7, either buy laptop that come with FreeDOS (no OS) or Linux and then you install W7 yourself (make sure the brand release W7 drivers for the model), or buy business class laptop that still come with W7P.

Budget: 1k - 2k
Requirement: below 1.6kg, lightweight, normal usage (M. Office / movie / web browsing), must have detachable batteries.

Lightweight (< 1.6kg) and detachable battery normally don't come together for new models hmm.gif
Need to find some old design 11", eg:

Lenovo
ThinkPad Edge E120, i3-2357UM + Intel HD3000@RM1999[1.5kg],W7HP, water resistant keyboard

Forget about detachable battery lah. With your usage, unless the laptop really has lousy thermal design, it will not heat up much. And no matter what you do, Li-ion battery probably will give you 3 years of service anyway tongue.gif

Hi all, I'm looking for a laptop as detailed below:

1. Preferred Brand: Dell, Asus, HP or Toshiba
2. Budget: Around RM2.5k. Max is 3k
3. Usage: Mostly work, emails, documents, excel, Internet surfing and occasionally to watch movies. Something with a decent graphic card.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: Since I'm using it for work, I need something not too bulky. Around 15" screen would do.

A must for me is that windows 7 be installed on the laptop. I don't intend to use windows 8 yet.

Any recommendations? smile.gif
*
You don't need a "decent" GPU for your usage. Intel IGPU is more than sufficient. (unless your work involve some graphic or 3D intensive stuff)
To get W7, either get laptop with FreeDOS and install W7 yourself, or business class laptop.
15" and not "bulky"? hmm.gif

Lenovo
G500S, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT720M@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB, FreeDOS
G500S, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT720M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Suggest you look at 14" instead:

Asus
PRO45VJ-V0056X, i3-3120M +Intel HD4000@RM1999[2.4kg], 4GB, 500GB, W7P

HP
ProBook 4440s, i5-3210M + Intel HD4000@RM2549, 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7P, anti-glare

Lenovo
ThinkPad Edge E431, i5-3230M + Intel HD4000@RM2589[2.15kg], 4GB, 1TB, W7P/W8P, anti-glare
S410p, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400M@RM1699[1.8kg], 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS
G400s, i3-3110M + Intel HD4000@RM1299, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
Use your remaining budget to increase RAM (4G stick ~ RM100), upgrade / extend warranty (eg. Thinkpad Edge get on site warranty), buy SSD (256G ~ RM600) to replace the HDD (keep as external HDD).

May I ask, I previously own the HP ProBook 4430s, i3, the laptop runs very cool, the exhaust fan blows room temperature air while my Asus A42, i5 with a GeForce 310M blows hot air from the exhaust fan.

Other than the difference in IGPU vs discrete GPU, ProBook 4430s is entry level business laptop, has better thermal design.

thking of asus k46 n a550c compare wit lenovo s400t n z400 ~

all is I5 3rd gen n spec wise nt bad

but lenovo coming out s410p which is 4th gen I5 ~~

Asus
K46CB-WX060H, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 750GB, W8, 4-cell, OD

Get as good a GPU as you could afford with your budget, in this case, those models that spec with GT740M.
Need good battery running time, look for models with ULV/T CPU, plus spec with battery at least with 45 WH or above (the bigger the better).

A550C only spec with GT720M, weak GPU.
S400T only spec with HD7450M, weak GPU.
Z400 spec with GT740M, but has lousy battery running time.
S410P only spec with GT720M, weak GPU.

Asus Malaysia has not refreshed lots of models with Haswell specs yet. Wait if you can, since Haswell will generally improve battery running time quite a bit.

Can also consider these:
Acer
V5-473PG-54204G50, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M +(1366x768;touch)@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB,W8 *no OD

Vostro 5470, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2249, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell
HP
Pavilion 14-N059TX, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099[2.03kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8
Toshiba
Satelite L40-AS125XG/B/W, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2299, 2GB, 750GB, W8

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Best one is subjective tongue.gif
The G400s only spec with GT720M, not GT740M.
Otherwise, the rest of models you listed has similar CPU & GPU power, and sufficient for your usage considering your budget.

You should go out and look / touch / click / type / listen / play / carry all the models and see what you like.

Pay attention when you buy, make sure you get brand new unsealed unit right out of box.
Make sure the unit you buy are local set which warranty are supported by the brands SC in Malaysia.
Negotiate when you buy. Don't get distract by free gifts, as those things are normally cheap and things that you may not need, rather get more discount.
Do leg work, walk around, compare, and buy from reputable store / re-sellers.

Since you are student, and kind of "kia ci" icon_rolleyes.gif , better get from brand that has good warranty support and return policy. Like Raymond said, Dell Malaysia has the best warranty support in Malaysia right now. 3 years on site support (which mean you call, technician will come to your place to fix laptop within 1 or 2 days) should cover you well during your course tenure.
http://www.dell.com/my/p/performance-laptop-deals
That Inspiron 14R spec apparently is currently in 2-5 biz day delivery page by Dell. You can buy online, use the chat button to negotiate deal. Can pay by credit card biggrin.gif Dell will deliver to your place.

Otherwise, the HP / Toshiba / Sony all has carry-in warranty. The Toshiba has a slight edge since at least it come with 2-3 years warranty period. Carry in warranty mean you need to send laptop to SC, leave it there if necessary, and wait and bite your fingers and pray that they fix it quickly so that you could do assignments ... laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

can i play Crysis or some other demanding games ? I need a laptop for both work and sometimes games.

or you guys have better suggestion for
1. Preferred Brand - Any brand
2. Budget - below RM4000
3. Usage - mostly for programming, should be able to run one or two virtual machine at a same time, some games
4. Preferred laptop size - preferred 17" or a bit bigger

and this laptop will not become hot since i will be using it many hours everyday

thanks.

Get more RAM for VM. 4G stick ~ RM100, 8G stick ~ RM200.
17" in Malaysia are mostly expensive stuff. You probably should consider getting 14" or 15", and connect to external display when you need to.

The Y series that Raymond mentioned run hot.
The illegear (based on Clevo) has better thermal design.

My company Toshiba L310 is dying and my boss gave me a very limited budget to buy a new one. I travel 2-3 times per month with laptop (~3.5kg with bag/ power adaptor) +projector (~3kg with bag/cords) + hand carry luggage (~6kg).

1. Preferred Brand: Toshiba, Asus, Lenovo
2. Budget: <RM2200
3. Usage: basic office applications. Simple video editing with Sony Vegas (1024x720 mpg, clips from Sony Standard Definition viewcam)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 13-14"
5. Weight: <=2kg
6. Others: must have VGA port to connect projector (or HDMI-VGA adaptor), Optical drive optional

I understand that ultrabook is a big no no for video editing BUT I've been editing video (non-HD) using the 4 years old Toshiba and I'm fine with the performance. If the ULV processor (e.g. i5-3317U, i5-3337U, i5-4200u) can perform better than T2370 in L310, then I will choose ultrabook to lighten my burden on shoulder/ for better battery life.

Another difficult question: will a discrete graphic card like Nvidia GT630M found in Satellite U940-1001X OR AMD HD7570M found in Satellite U840-1009X improve video editing performance? From what I read, processor speed & RAM are more important but there are comments saying that NVIDIA card with CUDA technology greatly enhance video editing performance. I'm confused.

Yes, those i5 ULV/ULT CPU definitely have more processing power than the T2370 Pentium smile.gif
It depends on the video editing software you use. If they are programmed to take advantage of Open CL or CUDA, then the GPU definitely help. So you need to check the version of Sony Vegas you have.

I already bought the dell 14r yesterday thanks too all sifu that willing to guide me smile.gif

I don't know how to answer when my friends comparing my 14r with the Z500 because I'm not so good in computer.  With one is better actually ? Can you give me some explanation so I can told him.

Inspiron 14R, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM1849 [2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Linux, 6 cell; W8@RM2049
Z500, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2299[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 years warranty

Is that the 14R you bought?

If yes, then the comparison:
battery running time - 14R better by quite a bit.
CPU processing power - Z500 better a bit.
GPU - the same.
Warranty support - if you have used your budget to upgrade to 3 years for 14R, 14R better. Otherwise, Z500 has longer 2 years carry-in warranty support, but 14R has 1 year onsite warranty support.
HDD capacity - Z500 bigger.
Screen size - Z500 bigger but the image size is the same (same resolution), you don't see more thing with Z500.
Thermal profile - 14R better.

The uncertainty over the battery is the cost to replace

Friend of mine using Vostro V130, guess how much Dell quoted for replacing the battery? She is in dilemma because the unit still has Dell warranty but the battery has none. Open up the unit = warranty void?

Take good care, and the battery probably will last the 3 years before user get itchy to upgrade smile.gif
Don't let the laptop get hot. High temperature kill battery fast.
Don't ever let the battery fully discharge, that kill the battery capacity. Once it left with 30 - 50% charge, try to charge it back up.
Don't worry about plugging in AC power when battery is 100% charge. New gen laptop has good battery management software that take care of it.

Buying battery directly from Dell is always more expensive tongue.gif
