QUOTE(nexus2238 @ Sep 21 2013, 07:55 AM) Fast - CPU & GPU give the laptop the processing power, but the biggest bottleneck is the slow storage, so spend money to get SSD (128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600) and replace the HDD. Thanks for the suggestions! I cant spend extra on SSD. If I were to cut my laptop budget and use the remaining on SSD, is it better than buying a more expensive laptop without SSD?With your budget, the largest screen you can get is 15" (with reasonably powerful spec) Dell Inspiron 14R, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) @RM2499[2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Ubuntu 12.04 , 6 cell; W8SL@RM2699 Inspiron 15R, i7-4500U + AMD HD8850M (GDDR5)@RM2449 [2.32kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), Ubuntu 12.04 , 6 cell; W8SL@RM2649 Lenovo Y410p, i7-4700MQ + GT750M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3099[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs MSI GE60-2OC, i5-4200M + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM3099,8GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W8, steel series KB Prices are RSP, negotiable. |

QUOTE(raymondtong94 @ Sep 21 2013, 09:54 AM) sure, why not? warranty void lable stick on below keyboard , dont try upgrade ssd on z500 / z400 model just FYI, if you want to hard drive bays, you need to buy a caddy drive for the Z500 but will sacrifice your DVD-RW drive though. QUOTE(rxy @ Sep 21 2013, 10:20 AM) Thanks a lot for the reco.. a cache is just as its name stated. the small 24GB mSATA SSD will store a copy of frequently access data / files, and help these launch faster. As soon as you access those not in cache, back to HDD crawling. So, it's a hit or miss thingy. Better than no caching, but definitely cannot compare to having everything store on a SSD.For the Asus one, would the performance of the 24GB mSATA cache disk comparable to normal SSD? |

QUOTE(rxy @ Sep 21 2013, 10:32 AM) mSATA and SATA is just the port, nothing to do with the SSD.Most of not all current gen SSD will saturate the bandwidth of mSATA or SATA III port (i.e. the SSD is too fast for the port You could get 256G or 128G mSATA SSD, but typically they are slightly more expensive compared to SATA SSD of similar size. (I'm talking about using the mSATA SSD for storage here, not caching). |

QUOTE(HowAh @ Sep 21 2013, 01:27 PM) Thanks for the suggestions! I cant spend extra on SSD. If I were to cut my laptop budget and use the remaining on SSD, is it better than buying a more expensive laptop without SSD? SSD is something that you could upgrade easily. CPU and GPU, on the other hand, are something that stuck with the laptop (for models within your budget). So the idea is just use your current budget to get the most powerful CPU & GPU you can afford, then save up to upgrade SSD later What I was trying to say was, a laptop that has a lot less powerful CPU and GPU but spec with full SSD, will feel a lot more responsive during normal usage, since the largest bottleneck on user experience is generally due to the slow HDD.
