1. Preferred Brand
- Any brand would be fine.

2. Budget
- Maximum of about RM4-5k.

3. Usage
- Mechanical engineering course(Not so sure yet which softwares i will be using)
- Some mild gaming - DotA 2

4. Preferred laptop/screen size
- 15++ inches

5. Are these suitable?
- Dell Inspiron 15 7537(7000 series), 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4500U processor (4M Cache, up to 3.0 GHz),
  Windows 8 SL(64bit), 15.6'' display, 8GB RAM, 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive, NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M 2GB
  GDDR5
- HP ENVY Touchsmart 15-j053TX, Intel® Core™ i7-4702MQ (2.2 GHz, 6 MB L3 cache), Windows 8 64bit, 15.6"
display, 8GB RAM, 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB DDR3

6. Extra preferences
- Preferably a laptop which can last me up to 4-5 years.
- International warranty which can be extended up till 3/4/5 years(May be furthering studies overseas)

Hope my requirements aren't too much haha....  laugh.gif  laugh.gif  laugh.gif
*
Brands normally sell consumer line laptop a max warranty of 3 years, and even if they allow you to extend longer to 4/5th year, the warranty will be rather expensive. I think 3 years warranty is about right.

The demanding software you will probably use are CAD and simulation software.

Inspiron 15 7000, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) + (1920x1080; Touch)@RM3599[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr
Envy Touchsmart 15-J053TX, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080;touch)@RM3499[2.56kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8

The Envy 15 has a more powerful CPU (quad core) vs the Inspiron 15 7000 (duo core), but the 15 7000 will give you longer battery runtime.
Both have a good GPU for your usage. And come with FHD screen that give you more work space.
In term of build quality, my vote go to Inspiron 15 7000.
You can get International warranty from either brand. For HP, just ask re-seller to assist you to get the correct care pack. For Dell, extend the warranty to 3 years, and if you move overseas to further study, you just need to do a Tag Transfer online to transfer the warranty to the country that you are going.

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Get the Linux spec. You can get cheap legal OS from college. Just need to download Win OS driver from Dell website. Extend warranty to as long as you can afford (3 year Pro Support NBD is going at RM259).

"lite games" as in FB games?
Then you really don't need discrete GPU, and also don't need i5 CPU.

Anyway, if you insist:
(the better the GPU (higher number), the better the gaming performance if you play GPU demanding games)
Acer
E1-472G-54204G75k, i5- 4200U + Nvidia GT720M@RM1899, 4GB, 750GB, W8

Lenovo
G400s, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT720M@RM1799, 4GB, 500GB, W8

FreeDOS mean you need to get and install OS yourself.
Prices are RSP, negotiable.

Is Asus Vivobook under the ultrabook category? The model that you suggested, the i5 processor is the low power Intel core right, like around 1.7-1.8gHz? Does that affect the speed by a lot? But since you suggested this model, I am assuming that the reduced processor speed will not be very obvious in daily office tasks that I need the laptop to perform.

Thanks!
*
ULT CPU has lower TDP, but can still turbo up if call for. i5 ULT is over-powered for daily office task smile.gif
The slowness that you will feel is due to HDD. HDD is the biggest bottleneck of laptop performance. The way to alleviate is to go with SSD. Get SSD, 128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600, replace the HDD (keep as external storage), and you will feel the laptop get a lot more responsive.

Put it this way, even if you buy a laptop spec with the fastest i7 quad core but with HDD, compare that with a MacBook Air with SSD, the MBA will feel a lot "faster" for daily office task.

Thanks for the explanation!

The one I am looking at right now is S550-CA : http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-VivoBook-S550CA...p/dp/B00B7K0ZG6

It doesn't come with a dedicated graphic card but I can live with the integrated Intel gc. It does, however, come with a 24gb SSD, some of the reviews online say it is a hybrid SSD with the HDD, not entirely sure what it means or how true that it but I assume that it will at least be 'faster' than regular HDD.

I have also read reviews saying that one of the cons of these Asus Vivobook models is the poor display quality, like the 1366x768 resolution and the glossy/reflective display, will have to see it in real life to judge. Not really sure how much difference is between 1080p and 768p on a 15"6 screen.
*
Wonder why would you want to go with that S550 which is spec with the older Ivy Bridge (3rd gen) CPU hmm.gif Also don't see why you need touch screen on a 15" traditional form factor.

That S550 is spec with 24GB mSATA SSD, which is factory set for caching. It will improve responsiveness somewhat compared to a sole HDD setup by caching the frequently access files onto the SSD, but does not come close to a full SSD setup.

In term of quality of the display panel, it is best for you to look at the real thing itself (may sure it is exactly the model you want to buy, since panels used are changed from one spec / model / batch to another) to decide for yourself.

You will not get FHD from Asus with your budget icon_rolleyes.gif

Lastly, any other laptops brands/models that you think are worth mentioning? Would like to explore more options.  biggrin.gif

Doesn't matter which type of program you run, GDDR5 is better than DDR3 for the same GPU.
CAD / Simulation software typically can take advantage of quad core.

You want International Warranty, can also consider:

Hey there I would like to ask for some recommendations for a laptop, and I do have many requirements, please don't judge!

1 - I would like the build to be similar to a MacBook Pro, thin, but it doesn't have to look exactly like a MBP.
2 - The screen should be at least FULL HD, meaning 1080 p and above
3 - The laptop has to be lightweight, around 2-2.5kg and below
4 - The battery life should be good, at least 6 hours and above.
5 - It has a decent graphics card
6 - Budget $ 1700 USD and below
7 - Uses: Gaming, Entertainment such as watching movies, Microsoft word
8 - 14 inch screen and below

I would be really happy if someone could find me such a laptop, as it is very difficult to. Anything except a Razer Blade please!
*
Btw, when did a 13" MBP has a discrete GPU?
Only the 15" MBP has discrete GPU.

You can start by looking at these Clevo. You can get them from Xotic PC if you are from US.

Hey guys, I don't know which type of laptop I should choose.  I'm deciding between the i5 U and M processor.  I sometimes do some photo and video rendering using Adobe After Effect and Premiere but that's like ONCE in a while, probably once or twice a year.

I am thinking of Lenovo Z510 but it's kinda heavy and thick.  I actually prefer laptop that's less than 2.3kg and can be slightly thicker than ultrabook. So, do you have any advices? My budget is at RM2.5k.
*
ULT CPU can handle Adobe After Effect and Premiere amateur usage.

Do you mean you want 15" since you are thinking about Z510? (some time I'm really sick of guessing, follow the suggested format on the 1st post must be very difficult doh.gif )
Choices are rather limited with your budget:

Tough one.
I don't think you can get Y510P local set within your RM3k budget hmm.gif
Each has its appeals and flaws rclxms.gif
In terms of raw power Y510P has i7 quad core GPU, but that is not going to make much difference for gaming since the cap is with the GT750M GPU for both models.
In terms of aesthetics, it is subjective. You should go out and look / type / touch / listen / click / carry the real things to decide icon_rolleyes.gif

In term of specs, the Inspiron 15R and the Inspiron 15 7000 (the more expensive spec) is slightly over the Asus.
But the Inspiron 15 7000 RM3.6k is over your budget hmm.gif
The cheaper Inspiron 15 7000, however, don't have discrete GPU (you may be able to live with that, depends on the level of graphic work you do hmm.gif )
The Inspiron 15 7000 is good looking and also has a solid build (if you ever get your hand on a display unit, try to bend it to appreciate it tongue.gif )

None of these has mSATA SSD factory spec for caching, so you need to upgrade after-market.
