My friends recommend me to join his company as an help desk. The salary is high basic+car allowance+night shift allowance = RM2.5K above. Some more near by my house with no traffic.

My question is that, what the basic requirement for an help desk, how the future of it, how the job eviroment. Some of the forumer said that help desk lis ike reading out the touble shoot from a paper. I don't want to stuck with the same 2.5k untill age 30 with out exploring new thing.

Hope anybody in the help desk fields can gave your feedback. Thank!

Depends....most help desk are call centers and not onsite (hands-on)
Call-centers can improve your softskills. You'll need to really brush up on your softskills as all call centers base your performance on customer satisfactions. (technical skills is somewhat secondary...)
I'm working at a call center now. As i see it, the future is not that bright.
The next big step up is to go into management.
but if your just starting to join the work force...I would say that it is not such a bad start (pay is always a big incentive...)
Good Luck

Nowadays helpdesk support analysts are required to do more than just picking up calls and escalate problem tickets to the next level of support, helpdesk is given more access to perform more things like, remote troubleshooting, remote software installation / upgrade, mail setup, rebooting servers... etc, since it is more expensive having people / field services on-site, more power is given to helpdesk to do more things to save costs, and only send people on site if there is really such need eg: Hardware failure. It is not easy to support through the phone / remote access, and manage fussy end users as you think, communication skills and problem handling skills are very important as you will be dealing with someone, who is not able to carry on with theri business due to IT issues and there is a financial impact to them if their system is not up, so you can imagine that their tone, which wouldnt be friendly most of the time (and especially they are the customers, they will always think they are right), so it is a good training for you too. Another good thing about helpdesk is, you got a bird eye view on the business process in the support environment, you understand which are the people who can perform certain tasks on a problem, and how do you route a problem ticket which is halfly solved to another team to follow up, you are very much doing the coordination for a big IT issue.

In term of career development, i would think that if you wanna go for a higher level of support, second level or third level, you may treat it as a stepping stone,
Good try, you get a start at an MNC i think. Well, i used to be in the helpdesk environment last time, last time, other than doing the things i mentioned above, i was required to update knowledge base for end users (one of the projects to reduce customer calls for standard issues), weekly conference call with Helpdesks in Europe, North America.. etc to discuss priority 1 issues.. and so on..

This messaage was reply to the 1 who PM me. I accidently delete you mail. So, I have to reply here.

The location is in Cyberjaya & company name... I can't say it as there some politic inside. But, I can said is a famous international company.

The politic that I mention is that to get the job. I have to "Give" the interviewer some "Kopi" (RMxxx) to pass the interview. But that only let you pass the interview only. Whereter they want to hire you as permanant staff still depend on the top management as that 1 you can't give any "Kopi". That also depend how well you perform in your work.

Is EDS call enter that bad? No wonder they have lot of vacancy online. I almost went for it as it stated HIGH PAY.

About the interviewer, I heard from my friends that he incharge of all interview. So, if I want to work in that company have to "kopi" him. International company sure a lot of people want to work there.

That fellow sure make a hell of money just by leting people pass the interview. Imaging... 1 month let 5 person pass the interview he already make 2K-3K already. Somemore call center turn over is high also. Wonder what will happen to him once his managemnt find out about it.

quite true. not many ppl can stand workin in a call centre. usually those who stay (based on my observation in my previous company), they usually cant find other jobs. sure, thr might be SOME who likes doin call centre jobs but heck, it's not for long run. unless ur supervisor really likes u, then quite hard to climb up the corporate ladder
