Depends on language, which is based on cultural context.

In English, noon is 12. So after that is well afternoon. Then you have the afternoon tea. Evening is when you leave work or have dinner.

BM had no equivalent for afternoon. So petang covers afternoon and evening. Eg minum petang. From 1 to 6 is usually considered petang. 7 is on the fence.

Similarly the context for night and malam is different. Night is when you sleep. That's why ppl wish you good evening even at 10pm and say good night when you leave. Malam however is usually after 8pm

Lol why angry? I didn't see any need to mention it earlier cos OP was asking in terms of clock time.

Senja is dusk in english, i.e. when the sun sets. Also subuh = dawn. For both these words in BM and english, the usage is similar. It denotes a phase of the day, but no one uses it together with clock time. Ppl say "bangun waktu subuh/6 pagi" and not "bangun 6 subuh". Similarly, "wake up at dawn/6 in the morning", not "wake up at 6 dawn".

Wrong.
am = ante meridian (before midday)
pm = post meridian (after midday)

Nothing to do with the concept of phases e.g. morning, afternoon or evening.
1 - 5 pm is still afternoon in English. You pernah dengar anyone from UK or US say 1 pm in the evening? biggrin.gif

Afternoon in English != petang in BM.
