Alcatel appears to have done a pretty good job of incorporating handwriting recognition into its firmware -- for instance, our rep drew up a complex mathematical equation (at an awkward angle, making for below-average penmanship), which the phone processed accurately within a couple seconds. As you'd expect, you'll also have the opportunity to take notes, sketches and plenty of other stylus-worthy activities
QUOTE
we've noticed that the company has put a much higher amount of focus on quality

QUOTE
If you've suddenly discovered yourself wanting this particular device, you may need to hold off for a bit. The Hero will first roll out in China and Russia next month, with further expansion to other regions taking place at a later date. An LTE model is also in the works, but it isn't going to get to any market until 2014 at the earliest.

no idea with the RRP yet..

based on the specs and design, nothing could go wrong with this device, except that i think it don't support LTE? hmm.gif

i'm eyeing on this now.. if the price cheaper than most mainstream, i think i will go for it.. because i read e-book quite a lot.. this device can give me 3 in 1 : smartphone+tablet+kindle!

Alcatel may not be popular in terms of mobile phone manufacturer but it's still one of the known telecommunication players in the world.

Good? Actually nothing better.. Reading on my Kindle paperwhite enable me to read more.. Lcd screen really hurts eyes.. And e ink paper consume very little juice.. So means that, by utilizing the e ink cover during reading will definitely saves battery..

lower the brightness on LCD reading helps alot on the eyes. I do that alot on my iPad mini.
with e-link, it should reduce the effect further more.

Uncle Benny's username is benny888.

There is no mention of the digitizer technology apart from saying "active".

Some reviews will be good for a comparison vs note3.

I believe this will be a good enough kind of device with note functionality.

Price?

Cpu type is also not mentioned but it could be an s4 or mtk6589 hopefully the T revision.

My device always set to very minimum and adaptive back light setting.. But still bright and tiring for prolong readin.. And e ink is the best when under sunlight.. Most importantly the reading feel, u feel like u are looking at paper.

You mean, if this MTK proc phone is priced at RM1499, and Note 2 at RM1499, you'll choose MTK Proc phone?

Probably its good idea since this is newer phone. I hope their update is good.

I know that old phone will rarely get official update. Note 2 I have doubt they will update until Android 5.0.

But for Alcatel, how is the update?

I just scared the usability of Hero is less than Note 2. Note 2 note taking ability in its OS is awesome.

Mtk roms are harder to find and they're usually used in the to mid range China phones.

I believe something like HandyNote will provide equivalent note taking features and is vendor independent.

I also recall someone mentioned that Alcatel is a rebrand by TCL China? Rom and service support is not known at this time, although personally I feel root and a custom recovery are sufficient since we now have Xposed framework.

Well, if this hero price is a little tad lower than note 2, i will get this one.. Just that i have reservation bout this phone coz tried a demo scribe easy and it was kind of laggy but can't make much out of it coz it's a battered demo unit.. Anyone with more experience with current alcatel phones, please comment..

About pricing, I think should be a lot cheaper, because they use the MTK proc. But, if all the accessories come in one package, I bet that could jack up the price, but still if reasonable price with a good package, why not.

By now, I believe MTK chip set maker should be more mature. Hope they can have more stable processor for this nice piece of phone.

Would like to know the price of this phone & see if it could replace my Note 2 by the time it's available in the market.

Well....regular capacitive stylus. For a moment I thought this could be a viable alternative. ...still, 6" and the e-ink cover should make for a good media consumption device.

Hi.. Well, i din't try the hero itself.. Sorry if i implied i tried the hero.. The unit that i tried was a demo unit of scribe easy.. It's a mid range to low phone.. A cheaper alternative tocit's sibling, the scribe hd.. I love the way the phone look like and the price was faitly reasonable.. Rm499.. But the demo unit shows too obvious lags but that i feel is due to constant abuse.. Well, that's all i know for now..

This phone, when launched in MY, will easily make the Note 3 shit in its pants while running away. It's good to see Alcatel making a comeback into the smartphone scene, and a great comeback at that too! Kudos Alcatel. If this phone is price at below RM1800 would easily make Samsung cry in shame ... hehehe

This is the price before official launch. So does it means the actual price will be cheaper than RM1.3k?

The battery test was for dual sim variant, which is not so good. I hope the battery for single sim can last as long as htc one max at least

Alcatel Malaysia just announced this device today. I guess they put it as coming soon cuz waiting for the Magic Flip and other accessories to sell together. Most sellers now only have stock for Device only.
RRP at RM1399. Around the same with K900 and Fonepad Note 6.
So I think here we can get it for RM12++

Apparently in Malaysia is only single sim.
Just got myself 1 touch hero yesterday. Its really value for money, but of course you can't expect much from Mediatek Processor. Coming from S800, then Intel Chipset, this is definitely at the bottom but i'm still enjoying it.

Free Bluetooth sidekick (vey compact and light!)
Magic Flip case (really magic and have magnetic features to cover whole screen rigidly, like those ipad cover)
Free KFC Voucher (although irrelevant, but you can get free snack plate with this voucher)
2 pin charger and standard accessories

got mine @rm1300, got extra normal flip cover, rather than kfc voucher, it true that a bit slow compare to s600/s800,but its tolerated. big and bright screen, magicflip and the bluetooth sidekick worth it, gotta get a 32gb micro sd card later then start using the phone to test the battery life. too bad it doesnt support my old 64gb.

I've been using this phone for a week now. Have to admit the design is superb with super slim bezel comparable to LG G2. Its the lightest, smallest for 6'inch device.

Battery wise, non-stop using I can easily get between 7.5 - 8.5 hours of Screen On Time. However during standby mode, the SOT will be around 5.5 hours. For comparison, on Fonepad Note 6 I can only get around 4 - 5 hours of SOT, max.
Alcatel still needs to work on the standby mode.

Stock launcher is smooth, but when I tried using Next Launcher 3D it really lags, downside of Mediatek Chip. Even Fonepad Note 6 with Intel Chipset can handle Next Launcher smoothly. Im starting to like the stock launcher now due to transparent notification, makes the bezel looks even thinner.

Conclusion, very happy with the slim design and long-lasting battery. On working days it will easily go on 2-3 days without charging. So far it never lags cuz I just use it for light gaming and moviesss, although Mediatek, but still a quadcore wink.gif Most importantly, for the spec that I get, its damn cheap wei

I think those accessories are not available yet.

Anyway, I think Alcatel has done a good job to differentiate themselves in this crowded market of android smartphones. Pretty impressive for the price and comes with full 1080p screen.

Yes, quality feels pretty premium....like ori Samsung flip covers. On the whole, the Hero feels pretty well built with nice feel for the back cover and not slippery. Slim bezels make the phone more compact and easy to handle.

I like the LED flip cover which attaches to the back of the phone with magnet. It also makes the cover to stick when open or closed. Something which I don't find with other phones. Screen can also be turned on and off when flipping the screen to open or close.

Just seen a function to turn the phone on and off automatically. Might be useful if need to set alarm to wake up and I don't like to leave the phone on overnight.

The camera is unfortunately pretty disappointing for a 13 MP shooter. More like a 5 MP camera with fuzzy pics. Hope some firmware upgrade will come out to fix it.

Sound quality with headphones is OK.

played with the hero at lowyat ground floor today... first impression screen looks really good together with the ultra slim bezel.. but slightly wider and thinner means difficult for one hand operation in my opinion. stylus feels lousier than note 1, didnt test it out though..

Note 2 is perhaps better in every aspect compared to Hero except for design and battery life.

As for those cool accessories for Hero such as projector and e ink flip cover, no telling how good until those are released. Still prototypes.

Not much better bro...

Note 2's response also generally better and smoother.

Comparing the Hero with Samsung Galaxy Mega, the latter is still better too....not that I'm pro Samsung.

I read from somewhere that the sluggish feel is caused by the less optimized launcher provided by Alcatel. Perhaps you can install another launcher, like KitKat Launcher. Try it out smile.gif

Before you continue reading, I must tell you that I'm neutral and I buy whatever is good.

The S Pen being pressure sensitive is much better than the AOTH which only has a capacitive sensor. You have your right to boycott any brands, but it is wise to buy something that suits you.

• Note II has AMOLED
• Better XDA dev support (lots of customROMs to play with)
• Better video recording (for sure)
• S Pen
• Good battery life
• Good speakers

trade in my S3 at RM550 and got this Hero few days ago.
bought in lowyat one shop with RM1299, without the bluetooth sidekick phone.
Love the big screen and it's LED cover notification.
Battery life is good. can last about two days.
can't deny that the stylus is not so good with the screen.
but lucky i seldom use stylus.
Camera quality not so bad lah actually. It's all depends on the light condition around you. Big aperture, can capture well in low light condition, but with noise.
Just my simple review. sorry for my poor english.

I noticed that the battery consumption stats is very different from Samsung or Sony phones. Usually the screen takes up the most power by far but not the Hero.

Cell standby consumes the most power instead.

That a massive downgrade IMO.

The only upside from that is that u get a way bigger, Full-HD resolution screen. I cant think of anything else.

Every other aspects from that transition is a downgrade imo. Inferior camera, Inferior processor, Outdated OS and developer support (its Alcatel - chances of getting the latest android updates are slim).

bought this at rm1299:
phone + magic flip + one extra flip cover + sidekick + charger + micro usb cable

the 6" fullHD ips screen is gorgeous. the mid level cpu + 2gb ram + camera is more than sufficient for my daily use. the magnetic magic flip cover is fantastic. the default web browser with quick controls (enabled in the browser's settings>labs>quick controls) is a joy to use. this is indeed a excellent value for money android phone at this price point.

sure the most powerful cpu + 3gb ram + amoled screen is the note 3, but the retail price is RM2399 + rm189 for the flip case. imo the price is obscene.

phone speaker quality, calls and music player, imo it is better than note 2, loud and clear

ear phone quality with tuneIN internet radio app, mkv movies, good enough. there is an inbuilt equalizer; u can adjust the tone to your preference. for me i listen to my music sources, flat.

camera, the samsung notes are better. for point and click usage this camera is good enough.

the alcatel hero has a very thin bezel. it is also very slim in terms of thickness. it is very pocketable.

the magic flip, u can close the flip to answer calls so u won't feel like holding a big block to your ear tongue.gif the sidekick remains in my box, i dont use it at all .. ahahaha

the built quality is good. the black blue colour is nice, white is not available as yet. the magic flip cover has a matt silky thai satin finish, it is classy. imo, the phone built quality is better than the lenovo and asus at the same price point.

No man...I bought the Hero for my dad but am playing around with it for the time being first smile.gif

It has about the same thickness as the Mega.
Here's a side by side pic of the 2.
Overall, the Mega is still a better phone, IMHO...

I discovered something strange. IPS screens don't work well with polarizer sunglasses. The screen becomes dark when device is tilted horizontally. LCD screens don't have this problem.

I think he/she is not using the phone much, so most of times the phone is in standby/idle mode, thus that's the result..

Try play game and surf Internet for long time and see the outcome..

I had a go just now at lowyat. You are right funguss...mega is a better phone. Downside for me is that internal memory and the so not sensitive pen...

however I have to say that the bezel is pretty impresive. Comparing it to a note 3 the width and thickness is almost the same save for the height, but still very minor addition.

I've figured out what's the problem already.. it's due to an app that I've installed.. the app is called screen filter. it actually will reduce the brightness when i user it at night coz the screen is to bright at night.. disable the app then ok already..

i just bought it from DirectD outlet last night at RM 1299.

first booting, TONS of rubbish apps installed from fresh ROM.
The battery is at 55% now, started 100% from 8am this morning. Think is OK for my usage.

Data (Maxis mostly H or H+), Wifi (connected to Wifi network when I am inside office), BT (Sidekicks ON) is on too.

Stylus downright not useful, coming from Note 10.1

Screen is awesome, colors look good, sharpest is high, I dont use a screen protector, the screen attract massive finger prints and smudges.

FlipCase LED is COOL, but is a little too easy to accidentally 'disconnected'

Sound in general, only did a short MP3 playing, very LOUD.

the magic case is easy to detached in the beginning bcoz the centre piece (connecting the led flip to the magnetic attachment) is new and stiff. Bend it in and out a few times to break it in, the cover will stay put smile.gif

You won't need 80MB speeds on a mobile phone, you won't feel the difference. A class 4 one will work perfectly fine for weaker processors.

You can only feel the difference if you get the golden extreme plus one rather than the red ultra Sandisk only if you're using a phone with a fast processor like the Snapdragon 800/805

Maybe can try this:

Long press "Power On Button" while pressing "Volume Up"
Continue pressing for Boot menu to appear
In Boot Menu - Choose Wipe data or factory reset
Reboot

Else go to service centre.

Did you install any applications (especially those not from playstore sources) before your phone hanged?

Good luck.

I had this weird problem, and only stay connected when I set it to Charge-only mode or basic USB-drive mode.

Alcatel one touch idol x should be ranked as flagship devices.. Maybe the processor is not the best, but to say it's a low end phone is very understatement..

the phone hardware is more capable then what the current official ROM can do, I really hates the keyboard in compare to what my previous samsung note 10, I am getting more error/typo than usual using this.

The camera certainly not the best but not so bad either, the night low light mode does not seems to be useful, shooting it with HDR seems to give me much better results in low light situation which is weird.

Shot using auto-mode, then went thru some editing in photoshop an finally downsized to 1000 height.

The camera seems to be pretty good at retaining good details and sharpness provided sufficient light is available.
All I did was bring-up the shadow, add a little vibrancy and sharpen a little after downsize.

all i can say is the battery is superb. it can last me the whole day even with usage such as browsing, fb, light games. before using this phone i was using iphone 5, and it can only last me half a day with some light app usage. i am totally satisfied with this phone's battery even with this size of the screen it can last me the entire day. if not mistaken i remembered once i wanted to discharge this phone to 0% battery, and it was at approximately 35% and it too me 3 hrs plus to totally finish it till it off by itself.

hope this short and simple review can help u.

ehm, I have 3 random shut down due to unknown reason last week... anyone has the same issues?

Also, the camera produce roughly 9mp actual output calculated from the large fine jpeg file, wondering where is this 13mp claim came from. >.<'

but then 9mp is good enough for my casual candid. I'll use my other Nikon for the real deal.

I did the firmware update 01002 OTA. It was not good for me. The phone hanged, my screen freezed while I was sending a pix in whatsapp.

Went to service centre. They reformat the phone with firmware 01004. Haiyah, have to reinstall/restore all my apps again. So far, it is operating ok.

I just did the upgrade this morning, and first impression is the 'free' ram seems to be slightly more, avg usage is 50-55% now comparing to previously 60-70. as per reported by CM.

I am defaulted on Go Launcher EX.

somebody taught me how to dump my rooted rom in xda forum, and i have successfully flash and upgrade to build 01004~

those who feel lag should try erase your data and reset to factory setting to see if got any lag again.

after i flash build 01004 i don't feel got any lag.
noticed that new build has more free RAM, and the lockscreen wallpaper bug seems fix already. other than these, still can't notice other differences yet.

Just want to share pics taken with hero.camera always be my main concern when buying a smartphone.whats chipset inside not really important to me as long the browser browsing smoothly.cant denied the phone lag like hell but still acceptable at least to me.there's hiccup here and there with the phone..so far I have already encountered with freeze and non responsive led notification but all are solved with restart.back to the topic, here is the sample I took.

Conclusion : despite low score given by reviewers on internet to hero's camera,it still deliver good result.the only thing annoyed me is the over exposure..but not really a big deal since user can chanhe the exposure on manual setting.not the best camera on phone but honestly, it s better than my previous lenovo k910.

Btw got mine for rm1k..for a one week set,its worth all the penny I spent biggrin.gif

Getting a bit annoyed with this constant please connect to BT device when accessing my contacts even though the sidekick already connected to my hero. Anyone experience this error?

While the LED display is nice (but quite limited) the magnetic attachment points to the phone is flimsy. Can be detached somewhat easily.

bought this hero early this year...

alcatel promised kitkat and asked everyone to wait since june.
now if go to their fb, hero is like totally side track from everything. since hero2 is coming so i guess alcatel wouldn't want to do much for hero owners

kind a frustrated but nothing much i can do about it except this is my first and last phone from alcatel
