Xiaomi unleashes the Mi-3, you pick Tegra 4 or Snapdragon 800
Xiaomi has revealed its MiPhone 3 (or just Mi-3) at a product event in Beijing today, just as previously expected. As recent rumors suggested, the device is powered by either a Tegra 4 with four Cortex-A15 cores (for China Mobile) or a Snapdragon 800 with four Krait 400 cores at 2.2 GHz each (for China Unicom). The Xiaomi Mi-3 will cost RMB1999 ($327) for the 16 gig model and RMB2499 ($408) for the 64 GB. The device will go on sale in China in October, after which it will start selling across Hong Kong and Taiwan. No word about the rest of the world, though.
The Xiaomi Mi-3 The device is very slender at 144mm×72mm×8.1mm and weighs only 145 g, has a 5" 1080p IPS dislay, Android 4.2.1 skinned with MIUI v5 and covers imaging needs with 13 MP and 2 MP cameras. We've seen previously seen a pre-release Mi-3 with a Snapdragon 800 do really well on AnTuTu. Here's the promo video of the Mi-3.
In case you have missed it, Xiaomi is the Chinese manufacturer that poached Google's VP for Android, Hugo Barra. He has already taken up his duties as a VP of Xiaomi Global this week and attended today's launch event. Here's a picture of him all happy in China.

Xiaomi Announces the MI3 - Tegra 4 and MSM8974AB inside by Brian Klug on September 5, 2013 2:58 AM EST
Xiaomi has been making some interesting news lately, first with the abrupt transition of Hugo Barra from Google to Xiaomi, now with the announcement of their latest high end smartphone, the MI3, at their New Product Convention 2013 event. What was interesting about the MI2 announcement last year was that it was one of the first to include Qualcomm's quad core APQ8064 SoC inside, and Xiaomi has included Qualcomm SoCs since the MI1 (MSM8660). I still remember my first experiences with the Xiaomi MI1 and the value prospect that the device made me realize existed with the right set of conditions, and how impressed I was with that hardware. With the MI3 Xiaomi goes to variants based on both Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AB) and NVIDIA's Tegra 4 platform.
The WCDMA (China Unicom) and CDMA2000 (China Telecom) variants of the MI3 come based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AB platform, while the TD-SCDMA (China Mobile) variant is based on NVIDIA's Tegra 4 platform.
Xiaomi makes the first (to my knowledge) public disclosure of MSM8974AB, which is analogous to the changes we saw between APQ8064 and APQ8064AB. From 8974 to 8974AB, Adreno 330 GPU clocks climb from 450 MHz to 550 MHz, LPDDR3 memory interface maximum data rates go from 800 MHz to 933 MHz, and the ISP clock domain (I think Xiaomi might mean the Hexagon DSP here) goes from 320 MHz to 465 MHz. 8974 comes in both a bin with the 4 Krait 400 CPUs clocked at 2.2 GHz (really 2.15 GHz) and 2.3 GHz (2.26 GHz) with slightly different pricing, while 8974AB comes with a Krait 400 clock available only at 2.3 GHz. Process is still TSMC 28nm HPM, but I suspect that the AB variant might have the high k dielectric and/or transistor mix tuned slightly differently based on a few rumblings I've heard recently.
It's safe to say that Tegra 4 hasn't been the overwhelming success that NVIDIA had hoped for, nor able to continue the momentum that Tegra 3 built, so winning a slot with Xiaomi MI3 is a relatively big deal, even if Xiaomi's slice of the Chinese market isn't very large yet. The TD-SCDMA variant includes Tegra 4's 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex A15 4+1 architecture with 72 core GeForce GPU built on TSMC 28nm HPL. We've written a lot about Tegra 4, and got a chance to look at performance in the NVIDIA Shield review and came away impressed with performance in that platform. Of course the real interesting question is how Tegra 4 will perform in platform with smaller TDP and available platform power. Xiaomi claims relatively similar performance between Tegra 4 and 8974AB variants in a few system benchmarks as well. If we get the chance the MI3 might make for an interesting vehicle to compare the two SoCs in almost the same platform.
I'm not sure whether the MI3 uses the discrete Icera i500 modem for TD-SCDMA. i500 is fully TD-SCDMA enabled, so there's no reason that NVIDIA couldn't have won the entire platform slot, but I haven't confirmed it yet. Update: We've confirmed that the MI3 isn't using the i500 modem.
Either way Xiaomi is an increasingly interesting player in the Chinese market and always seems to make SoC choices that interest us.

Xiaomi is also boasting that the phone takes really good pictures with its 13-megapixel camera. The camera uses a Sony sensor and sports an F2.2 aperture, a wide angle of 28mm and a five element lens setup. It will also pack a dual-LED flash.
The Weibo account of the company posted a picture of image samples with very impressive looking shots that you can see below.

Xiaomi unveils new Android-powered 5-inch MI3, 47-inch smart TV in China HD By Richard Lawler posted Sep 5th, 2013 at 3:23 AM 66
We've had early previews thanks to leaks, but Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi -- more recently known as the new home of former Google exec Hugo Barra -- just took the wraps off of a new flagship Android phone and smart TV. The MI3 candy bar phone is available with either a 1.8GHz Tegra 4 processor (on China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network) or Snapdragon 800 CPU (the more powerful MSM8974AB variant; on China Unicom's WCDMA network and China Telecom's CDMA2000 network) that provide a 40 percent performance boost over the MI2S. It also sports a 5-inch 1080p IPS LCD built by Sharp or LG with "ultra sensitive touch" that works even when the user has wet hands or has gloves on.
Seeing how its local competitors are putting emphasis on the audio performance, Xiaomi pointed out that the MI3 features the Cirrus Logic CS42L73 DAC chip, which is apparently what the iPhone uses. Another surprise is that there's also Immersion haptic feedback, which adds some rumbling fun to games and certain UI elements. As for the cameras, the backside has a 13MP Sony IMX135 sensor with an F2.2 sapphire lens and dual LED, while the front side has a less exciting but adequate 2MP camera. Interestingly, MIUI's latest camera app will support RAW capture, as well as smart beautification by identifying the gender and age of the subjects in a shot.
Other bits of the phone include 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 16GB for storage (with a nice 120MB/s read speed), dual-band WiFi and NFC. Given the 8.1mm body thickness, the 3,050mAh battery is quite impressive (and the included charger provides fast charging with a 2A current), but only time will tell how well it lasts under those beastly processors. As for the price, the phone runs CN¥1,999 (US$330) for the 16GB version and CN¥2,499 ($410) for the 64GB, though only the China Mobile version (Tegra 4) has a mid-October date.
Following the announcement of the MI3, CEO Lei Jun also decided to keep the 32GB MI2S (with Snapdragon 600) at a reduced price of CN¥1,799 (US$290), which is quite a drop from the original CN¥2,299 (US$380).
Xiaomi unveils new Androidpowered 5inch MI3, 47inch smart TV in China
Moving on, we have the 47-inch 3D-capable Xiaomi TV which is assembled by Wistron (who apparently also makes TVs for Sony), and it'll come in six colors for the aluminium faceplate. The body boasts an 8.4mm bezel plus 2mm to 4.8cm thickness thanks to LG's IPS and Samsung's SVA panels. Like the Xiaomi Box, the TV also runs the company's MIUI flavor of Android, supported by a quad-core Snapdragon 600 with 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, dual-band WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0. It even claims an "easy to use" remote with 11 buttons and Bluetooth. Shockingly, the TV will cost just CN¥2,999 (US$490) when it arrives in mid-October.

everyone have bad experience with Tegra, Tegra 2, and Tegra 3,
yup
i've owned several snapdragon devices before, they r all very good, even after years of abuse, i owned 1 tegra 3 device, after half a year, it became sluggish and under performing
same with Nvidia's stupid graphic cards, not very durable.

I don't like the way how you called it "stupid",but yes,I also do have bad experience with tegra devices, even snapdragon s3 dual core is faster than nvidia tegra 3 quad core, tested on my xperia acro s and nexus 7
Quite an impressive phone. Nice screen. Bought mi2 couple months ago from China. Very difficult to get even you at China. One of the best & top selling phone in China.

well nothing to say with the outstanding specs and price, only question is about build quality and after sale service ...
Xiaomi phones build quality is well known for its greatness.
The only problem would be there's no official seller here in Malaysia. U can only get AP set with the warranty from local seller. And even that also depend if you get a good seller or not.
But the price is what made it awesome. High spec + Good build quality

not really, when m1 time, alot of user complaining of its build quality , but i guess there is some improvement from them as m2 users all ok with it ...
about AP set and local support , no choice as in only Lenovo is stepped in malaysia at this moment
I say it is hot like iPhone in US. Not saying iPhone is hot in China. Re-read my sentence.
I'm saying it's hotter in China, has nothing to do with the US market. US market still is popular with apple products, 40% of mobile device are apple products
i know custom rom is popular but how bout official update?
official update as in android 4.3? custom rom usually have better support than other branded phone. 2 or 3 weeks after launch newest android, custom rom developer will release their update based on the newest android. unlike other big brand u need to wait 2 or 3 month for update. longer if mid range phone.
Will this phone available at Taiwan?? Travelling to Taiwan end of Oct...hopefully by that time this phone is available..
so far i havent come across anyone who brought in xiaomi in taiwan. i'm sure there would be, but is too few to actually stumble upon. taipei u will have more luck. u can forget about taichung and taoyuan and kaohsiung area. i'm in taiwan at least once a month for the past 8 years.
try your luck lor. for me i havent stumbled upon xiaomi in taiwan yet. mostly htc's and samsungs and nokia.
I do provide purchase service from taobao with AP SIRIM, mean no duty fee or tax will be charge
pm me price and availability dates and colors available. location of seller and COD terms or other payment terms which are acceptable such as M2U, VISA, Master, CIMBclicks etc etc
Sure, but xiaomi phone always out of stock, mostly need to pre-order, some supplier will mark up the price too.

I'm using M2S now for 6 months...performance better than my Note II. Only screen small (720P IPS 4.3") hence causing eye strains if reading articles more than 10 minutes.
Built Quality impressive. Fall 2 times without protective case from 1.5 meters height still good. Only cause defects on the rounded edge..very minor.
Camera 8MP with acceptable quality. Night shot not so good producing a lot of noise. In door shot quite good cause i always use this to take photo in Engine Room.
Overall very satisfied with the phone. I was about to get a Nexus 4 for outdoor work due to bulky size of Note II which can't fit in my coverall suit pocket properly...i laugh when the contractor gave me this phone. She told me its the best phone in China & u cannot buy in shop. I laugh but then only i notice almost everyone in the yard will try to get one...they will come and ask from where u get the phone..its really popular there...nobody cares when u have Note II, IPhone, S3 etc..hahaha...
if i am to buy this phone, i will get the yellow one.. be bold.. never have such color for a phone. change taste.. very good spec yet so cheap.. tell this to the people at iphone 5s thread. no matter how much Apple charge them, they still agree because they said no other phone is good, they only have 1 option for a phone, namely iPhone.

better buy 64gb version because the 16gb version only have 9gb something available to store your stuff, since it is non-expandable external storage right?

U r right. No micro sd. But differ 16-64gb ard RM350-400. The base price for 64gb version 2499 yuan very hard to get.

No, not your issue, is Sony issue. I am ex-owner of Xperia Z.
I had try 2 phones using Sony Xperia Z camera sensor, one is Lenovo, another is XiaoMi.
Lenovo also better than Sony but XiaoMi did is extremely outstanding!
China brands phone getting better and better. But some people just couldn't see.. I hope these China brands will break into world meet soon, so it can pressure mainstream manufacturer to lower down prices.. How amazing that they can match the quality of mainstream devices, but yet keeping the price low
Ex owner? I always thought you're a loyalist when it comes to xperia haha. Anyway how much you gor your mi2s for? Got it from luna as well?
I never loyal to any brand, this MI-2s is not my phone, my friend lent me until I get my next phone. He ask his friend buy at China.
Sony Xperia Z is my 1st Sony phone, Xperia Z Ultra is my 2nd Sony phone. Now all sold. I am back to Samsung, or maybe XiaoMI MI-3.

Base on XiaoMi MI-2s - 32GB edition performance, it looks extremely awesome! and the new XiaoMi 3 is using same camera sensor, I believe it will behave as good as it possible.
Here sample photos I post before, snap using MI-2s.

Still waiting patiently for Xiaomi mi3 , but 5.0 seem to be too big for me though , if i grab a Mi2s - 32GB , would that be sufficient for future proof?

Thanks for your feedback. 15 days back, the link never appear, its paid advertisement on google to appear on top of page.
people must have spotted this opportunity on desperate people.
if that link dint work. just search for sweet_carte profile.
having a lyn tered with pipu buying doesnt means is mroe reliable.. but i guess is ok gua. no complaints from lyn member im tempted too but pricing expensive abit due to all those tax and shipping rm1289
Actually is this phone reliable a? I have a china phone before (Its a famous one but i dont feel like sharing out). The problem with it is, it will get lag after 3 months usage. Firmware is terrible as in the apps will always crash. Last thing is, i cant use the mobile network! I tried it on digi, clecom and hotlink and all of them couldnt help me out with the mobile network. I couldnt use 3g and online wherever i go. Anyone here can clarify and share whether these issues happen on Xiaomi 3 or not. Thanks!!

it's not because of telco. people's mindset here in our country when they think about china phone, they felt uneasy. previous experience with low quality phones that sold here before. they don't realise 90% of phones made in china.
stumbled upon this facebook page a while ago and now they are posting about recruiting reseller o.o not sure whether this is the official Malaysia xiaomi page or not tho o.o

Nope. I wont due to personal reason. But i can tell you the phone is once recommend and some people even say its better than Samsung Galaxy s2 (Its was during samsung galaxy s2 era that time) so i bought it. Not to mention, i waited for months to get it because it was always out of stock. I bought two. But after using for 2 months, i told myself i wont get any china brand anymore. Both give me problems. Plus, you really have to find a seller which is committed in their after sale service. Even some of those reputable and top seller in lowyat is also non-trustworthy. Have to nag them to fix your phone.. I wont share the sellers details out here because its not good, but i can seriously tell you, unless xiaomi open a branch in Malaysia, or else i will never risk my money in china phones. Sorry for being a bit harsh. A disappointed china phone user here.

Hmmm, nvm bro Xirality, why not you go and try the xiaomi 3 first and post a review here? Hehe If its not because of some bad past experience, i would have place an order for this phone too, this phone is too tempting. Nice design, nice camera, thin, sleek, 2gb, snapdragon 800 and all the top end stuff, its just too amazing to be priced at rm13xx

Haha. Im not going to buy unless they have proper serivce or reseller here. What shock is this phone sell like hot cake in China. Even on par with big brand.

Same mentality here hahaha! Yup i know. Same case as my old china phone also. Sell til like hot cakes plus hard to get stock ---> Gain trust in the phone ----> disappoint.
they are no longer the authorized dealer (actually doubted that were they actually the authorized dealer from the beginning), and the price they offered are actually more expensive that some dealer in LYN.

Alot of fans ask why we sell so expensive 1. We ship from China need postage 2. We need arrange people went China bring back that stock 3. Xiaomi every product lack of stock ,so the price become higher and higher
Lets wait for other people bring in the device, see first if other people can beat Xiaomi Malaysia price. Xiaomi Malaysia margin is too high. i only can accept if it is around rm100-200 diff. so my estimated price for 64gb snapdragon version will be around rm1500. Furthermore, they are doing bulk order, the cost should be less. rm600 margin for 64gb version is too crazy.

huhu... still can acceptable la.. even Xperia ZL also at this price range
I've bought my mi2s from elewholesale, which also had a thread in lyn under the nick sweet_carte or something like that. Their price is quite cheap.. Almost the same as the price in China. I bought the mi2s 32gb for rm1.25k only.. The pre-order for mi3 is rm1.3x something... From my personal experience, their response is quite fast I am by no means affiliated to them, but just a satisfied customer here

where can i get this phone? price? and how good is the screen display and the realiability compare to other mainstream phone thank you.. currently using htc sensation xe and galaxy nexus
meaning, by that time they are going to sell ready stock? or only for those who did pre-order with them?
My experience with mi2s, they've got both ready stocks and pre-order....for ready stock, the price is slightly higher by RM50...I am waiting for the ready stock though, and willing to pay for extra RM50 Hopefully they manage to get the stocks themselves, as I heard the phone is really hard to get...maybe after few months things get stabilised we can buy with ease

thanks man, now i can prepare the money to buy this.
I've heard, not sure true or not that the Tegra sometimes cause problem...performance is not so ok, or so-so..who can verify this? As mentioned by zerohunter, performance is not that impressive...awyway agree with you bro, my mi2s perform better than my S4 (sold) and Note 2 (not so fair coz quite old )

Actually from the Xiaomi Market, you can download the play store and install it from there. Once done with few other minimal steps which is not hard at all, you're good to go

what if the mobile phone broke up? there are no service centre for xiaomi here
Well, your concerned is right. However as for me, I am willing to take the risk and possible hassle with regards to the warranty claim later on (hope it stays fine ) So far, my experiences with Xiaomi phones are all good (Hongmi, MI2, MI2s)

Alright, so how we gonna buy that thing through what channel?
Local online shop, elewholesale.com got, but Eta for wcdma version is expected to be 7-9 weeks they're trusted and I've experienced buying stuffs from them (mi2s, accessories)
Great to hear that! I am keen to buy also, but at current rate, reseller are selling it at more than 1.5
I dont think whoever gonna buy need to worry about reseller, as Xiaomi style is that they sell through their own website. There might not even be a physical official shop. But I do hope there'll be a service center here in malaysia instead only in SG.

yes. whoever buying from reseller already forgone their warranty and services in mind before they decide to buy Xiaomi.
For Xiaomi business model, service centre will be setup but limited just like in China. only service centre at major cities.
As of now, i have doubt whether if Mi3 is a beautiful piece or not. A person i know has seen it and he said it is kinda not-so-beautiful. I might as well wait for Mi4.
While Redmi gotta fight with Moto G. But if they release Redmi 1S, then it is another matter.
All in all, waiting till the end of the year will be easy for me. (Currently using Jiayu G4)

Is depend on user, most user like us prefer flash stuff will pick Moto G over Redmi 1S. Both will sell well, but also depend on their marketing as you know Boleh-land all know Fruit Company and Some Song Company.
When come to Mi3, I think is about cheap hardware. I remember 64GB when they released in China convert to MYR is like RM1.5k.
another thing to note, the current Mi3 that is coming to SG and MY doesnt have support for LTE..
Yes. a lot of users expecting Xiaomi Mi3 uses Snapdragon 800 8974AB chipset (support LTE, which the founder promised during conference. Now its put 8X74AB chipset in their spec).
When Mi3 start selling, there's no announcement on use of 8274AB chipset, many users only found out after they ran the test. Xiaomi offer full refund to unhappy user. since then, no more noise.
Perhaps, Xiaomi will gives SG a surprise using 8974AB chipset since SG now have LTE! meanwhile the reason Xiaomi falls back to 8274AB chipset due to China no LTE yet!
haha... dreaming!

Prices are searchable online! no need to guess.
RMB 2,499 (64GB) times 0.55 rate = RM 1,374
RMB 1,999 (16GB) times 0.55 rate = RM 1,099.45 SGD419 (16GB) times 2.65 rate = RM 1,110.35 (pls note, SGD419 might / might not include GST of 7%)
im expecting Malaysia Xiaomi Mi3 prices will be around RM1111 since buying online directly from Xiaomi.
