I'm sure you know what type of chords Dragonforce uses in their songs, but do you understand the theory behind it?

Chord progressions can be applied to any kind of music, regardless of its genre.

"feeling" the notes just comes with time. I assume you are talking about improvising? I believe there is a way to practice this. And that is to think before you play. This is how i practice my improvisation:
Before i play something, i think how it's suppose to sound like. And then i try to execute the same line on my instrument. And i try to get it right on the first go. That's the hard part. Most of the time i hit the "wrong" notes, and sometimes i get lucky like blacktrix said and it ends up sounding even better. The key point here is i believe to listen more than you play. And once you get that lick, remember it and incorporate it into your playing. But don't forget your old licks. Now i know some people would say "theory is the real deal, it's not enough just to know a few licks". I enjoy playing funk and for me the secret is, when you don't know what licks to play just play dead notes. Works everytime. So maybe you should also take some time to find out your own secrets. It's kind of a last resort thing |

Heh I also think basically it all comes with experience and testing with keys/chords.
AND INTEREST: When I was 5 or 6 I really liked the power rangers theme song, you know the one which rings on their watches |

I usually hate to see the music score.
All not right. All transposed. But all my friends like to hear me play coz I know to sight hearing. Juz only need 2 hear for about rwice or more times and then can play the song (piano - very confident can play) (drum - newbie, still ok lolz). I found my talent maybe during in Form 4, tat is in 1994. Maybe need to refer to the score to know some difficult part to play like thrill. Until now I can only recognize E A D G(bass guitar) clearly and also the infamous concert Bb
I think the only way to do ear training is by learning how to recognize intervals, and this process takes really a long time |

I've been playing guitar for about 10-12 years.. can't remember the exact figure. Playing by ear requires alot alot of listening i think. For one, when you listen to a song, then you try to play the song until you master the song, you still have to remember the song. after that you know what note in the song = what tune.
Say forexample you play a song in E, and you memorize that song, in future when you hear another song in E, you can roughly guess that it's E coz you remember the tune of a E chord. It's easier said then done, that's why alot of practice is required. Other then that, song progression is important. Songs.. thankfully, not like some indian or chinese instruments, you only have a few notes to remember. So only a few song progression. Some songs especially those chinese pop tunes have the same tune over and over. progressions like 1,6,4,5 and such are popular. After alot of exposure, you'll get the hang of it. The major key i think is listen to alot alot of music. ANd listen to it over and over again. Sometimes i hear 1 song the whole day.. before it drives me crazy |

QUOTE(nicholas_1213 @ Aug 31 2006, 03:16 PM) hemm.. for my experience, i'd been playing piano for 10 year plus ( i started learning when i was standard 1) yeah i agree with chaim-ace. u need to have strong base of chord knowledge.. you'll realise as u practise, most of the songs they have a fix sequence (especially to those modern pop songs).. for example for a G major songs, it's either going like G - Aminor - C - D, or some other combination.. but as u proceed in your practising, u'l notice that there's some so called 'fix pattern' there, bcos they normally come in combination.. ( im talking about those modern songs, not those musics from classical or baroque period, those u really need the music scores ) yeah, by practising u'l master it, or i should say u can predict the coming chords after every chords.. i think practising first before learning theory/chords is betterafter you have mastered it, u can just enhance ur playing by adding in those skills such as appregios mentioned by Bassix.. anyway, i still believe "practise makes perfect" |
