As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

QUOTE
Everton have denied reports waived bonuses accounted for £4m of Marouane Fellaini's transfer fee to Manchester United.

As the dust settled on United's last-minute move for the Belgium midfielder, several newspapers claimed it took Fellaini's intervention to get the deal over the line.

The reports suggested his transfer request saved Everton £4m in bonuses, allowing them to accept an offer of £23.5m from United in line with an expired buy-out clause in Fellaini's contract.

But Everton's director of communications Alan Myers has shot down those suggestions, insisting the £27.5m for Fellaini is coming solely from the old Trafford vaults.

Myers wrote on his Twitter page: "For those asking: No Felli did NOT pay £4m of the transfer fee! The buying club will pay £27.5m."

The fee for Fellaini is understood to be £26.5m up front with a further £1m in add-ons, some of which Everton forked out on deadline-day to sign James McCarthy and bring in Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku on loan.

Lukaku rejected other offers to join Everton, where he will link up with fellow Belgium international Kevin Mirallas.

"I've known Kevin Mirallas since I was 14, and that should help," Lukaku told the club website. "We talked about the move and I am looking forward to playing.

"Roberto Martinez called me for 30 minutes and explained me what he expects from me. I decided that Everton was the best choice. They are a more prominent club than West Brom where I had a good time."

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie happy working under David Moyes

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has rejected talk that he is unhappy with David Moyes' coaching methods at Old Trafford.

Rumours surfaced suggesting Van Persie had not been impressed by Moyes' reign so far after replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of the Premier League champions.

However the Dutchman, who is away on international duty with Holland, has moved to dispel the rumours and insists he is enjoying working under former Everton manager Moyes.

"It's great working with the new manager David Moyes," Van Persie is quoted as saying in De Telegraaf.

"He has his own style and methods and I like these.

"We are working very hard from the day we started our tour to Asia and Australia. This will result in good matches, that's for sure. There is a very good atmosphere at the club.

"I'm happy with the style of Moyes. He does his own training sessions, he's close with the players and prepares us with his staff very well for the next opponent. That keeps us in shape.

"Luckily, because the title of last year gave us hunger for more."

Manchester United new boy Marouane Fellaini says Champions League inspired exit

Manchester United's new signing Marouane Fellaini says playing in the Champions League drove his decision to leave Everton.

The 25-year-old is training with his Belgium team-mates as they prepare for Friday's World Cup qualifier in Scotland as he continues to reflect on his dramatic move to United minutes before the transfer window closed.

Having arrived at Goodison Park in September 2008 from Standard Liege for £15m, Fellaini was an integral part of Everton's success but opted to hand in a transfer request late on Monday and eventually secured a deal with the Premier League champions worth £27.5m.

"I know Everton wanted to keep me but I played with them for five years and it was time to leave," the attacking midfielder told Sky Sports News.

"I want to thank Everton for supporting me but it's a new story for me now. I want to win the trophy, play Champions League and with United I can do that."

It was a frantic deadline day for United as their failed attempts to secure the services of Athletic Bilbao's Ander Herrera and Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao ended more fruitfully with the deal for Fellaini.

United boss David Moyes was full of compliments for the player he managed at Everton, saying: "He has attributes other people don't have. And with those qualities he has, I am sure he will be a big player for Manchester United."

When asked about the rushed nature of his transfer, Fellaini added: "It was last minute, last second. It was difficult but now I'm happy and now I concentrate for Friday.

"It was busy but now I'm here I can rest. I don't have the press and I'm happy to be here. Football is like this. The transfer window is like this. The most important thing is I am here. It's OK now."

And on the prospect of helping his new team to successfully defend their Premier League crown, he said: "I hope. I will do everything."

Nani says David Moyes convinced him to sign a new deal at Manchester United

Manchester United ace Nani has revealed new boss David Moyes convinced him to stay at Old Trafford.

Nani was tipped to leave United this summer and it was even suggested he might run down his contract and leave on a free transfer next year.

However, the Portugal international ended speculation over his future by signing a new five-year deal last week.

Nani admits he turned down offers from other clubs to sign a new deal and that Moyes played a big role in his decision to pledge his long-term future to United.

"I am very content with my new deal at Manchester United," Nani told the Daily Mirror. "This summer was not easy but after a lot of thought and talking to David Moyes I believe it was the best solution.

"I feel I can offer many things to United. I had other important offers but without a sufficent challenge to make me want to leave United.

"The coach would not guarantee me a place in the XI more than any other player. I know I must work hard to get into this team.

"That is my objective for this season."

Manchester United's Davide Petrucci still has his eyes set on becoming a first-team player

QUOTE
Davide Petrucci insists he has not given up hope of becoming a Manchester United first-team player after joining Royal Antwerp on loan.

Petrucci has gone down a well-trodden path as over 30 United players have spent time on loan at their Belgian feeder club.

Whilst most of the players have returned to United and then left, there have been a handful of exceptions with the likes of Darron Gibson, John O'Shea and Jonny Evans all spending time in Antwerp - before returning for first-team action at Old Trafford.

Indeed Petrucci says he spoke with Evans before making the move.

"I spoke to Jonny and he told me good things about Antwerp from when he was here," explained Petrucci to United's official website.

"So that was probably one of the reasons I came here plus the manager is Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who was a great player. That was an extra motivation for me so that's why I came.

"I am at the age where I need to play. Reserves football is fantastic when you are young but for us, me especially, I played there for a few years and won everything every year. I needed that step up. I couldn't do more than we have done already.

"I think it's not easy for David Moyes because he's just arrived and needs to have more focus on the first team. It's understandable but I need to think about myself and try to play as well as I can. Hopefully, he will see that and I will come back.

"You need to believe all the time - otherwise there is no point to play football, you know. If you don't believe in yourself, it is better not to play. I hope I can come back to United and play for the first team."

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to receive freedom of Trafford borough

QUOTE
Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is to be rewarded with the honorary freedom of Trafford borough after his glittering career at the club.

Ferguson steered United to 13 Premier League titles and also secured the Champions League trophy on two occasions as he became the most successful manager in Britain.

The Scot finally ended his 26-year reign in May and Trafford Council have confirmed he will be formally honoured at a meeting of councillors on October 14.

The local authority also decided to rename a road near Old Trafford stadium from Waters Reach to Sir Alex Ferguson Way.

"I am delighted to accept this honour from Trafford Council," said Ferguson.

"When I arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 I had little idea of the journey that awaited me. Over quarter of a century later, to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Trafford and to have a part of Trafford carrying my name is truly humbling."

Council leader Matt Colledge said: "Sir Alex has contributed significantly to Trafford over a sustained period of time through his strong leadership of the Manchester United team and it was felt that the Honorary Freeman title and the renaming of the street was a fitting tribute to him.

"Football contributes significantly to the borough through the large number of visitors it attracts and jobs it creates. It has been through the success of the team that the club has grown in strength over the years, becoming one of the world's most successful and renowned clubs."

Marouane Fellaini: Man Utd new boy wants to emulate Roy Keane

New Manchester United signing Marouane Fellaini says he wants to emulate former Old Trafford captain Roy Keane.

Fellaini is set for his United debut against Crystal Palace on Saturday after completing a £27.5m move in the final hours of the transfer window.

"Keane was an aggressive player who could win every ball. Maybe I can do this as well," said the 25-year-old Belgian, who joined from Everton.

"I can win the ball. I can clear the ball. I can play clean."

Former Republic of Ireland skipper Keane, who played for United from 1993 to 2005, was the driving force behind the Red Devils as they won seven Premier League titles in his spell at the club.

The defensive midfielder, now 42, also helped Sir Alex Ferguson's men win one Champions League, four FA Cups, four Community Shields and one Intercontinental Cup.

Fellaini often played in an advanced midfield role under new United boss David Moyes at Everton, but now wants the Scot to play him in a deeper position like Keane.

"The manager must decide where I play but I want to play defensive midfield," he said.

Moyes said he will check on the "risk" of playing Wayne Rooney, following a recent head injury, in the Premier League home clash against newly promoted Palace.

Rooney, 27, missed the 1-0 defeat at Liverpool and England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine after suffering a nasty gash on his forehead in a training ground collision with team-mate Phil Jones.

"He is in great physical shape," said Moyes. "Obviously he has a cut right in the middle of his forehead which could split because the skin is very thin.

"But he has had his stitches out and it has knitted. We just have to see where the level of risk is with his injury."
